The magazine reserves special praise for Naughty Dog's ability to one up Uncharted 2's action set-pieces without losing a focus on character development, as well the ability of the studio's artists to evoke wonder.
"One of the great coups of Uncharted 3 is that Naughty Dog manages to push its action to broader places while illuminating aspects of its hero Nathan Drake that previously felt opaque," it says.
"Uncharted 3 refreshes its backdrop with the clockwork dependability of a Nintendo title," Edge adds. "Because Naughty Dog's artists invest each setting with such exhaustive detail, you may not even realise you're being treated to the most exquisite fire, desert and sky levels since Super Mario Bros 3."
Away from the single player campaign, the mag says: "For those who like the opponents they wipe out to be capable of feeling actual humiliation, Uncharted 3's multiplayer modes lay out a gluttonous buffet."
Meanwhile, Edge reckons "there's fun to be had" in Uncharted 3's co-op adventure mode, but it "feels lacklustre" in comparison to the single player campaign.
obvious "the game is good" reviews are obvious and boring. Nobody on this board needs to be told UC3 is gonna be a great game. We are the most informed, knowledgable customers of video games out there; we are the LAST people who need video game reviews.
But the slightly negative reviews are the ones to look out for, and the ones to read about and see the fan reaction. "8 out of 10!? F*** THAT PIECE OF S*** WEBSITE HERP DERP". Aw yeah, the meltdowns will be GLORIOUS
I played it here and there for a few months after I got it. I didn't get it till earlier this year though so "yeah". thats prob why you have never played with me.

IGN says that Naughty Dog has adjusted the beta back a little bit more to what the first beta was. did that already happen or is that for the retail release?

9s and 10s everywhere else. I almost wonder why we bother with reviews when every AAA game is a 10!
yeah, for a game like this, or like gears, it's pretty pointless, but I still find it kind of fun to track them all. It is a lot more interesting for a new IP.

I'm interested in the story most of all this time I think. UC2's plot really annoyed me with how annoyingly predictable it got, people seem to be saying it deviates from that formula a bit this time.

Giant Bomb's review is basically "yep, this is the same as Uncharted 2. it's not breaking any new ground, but Uncharted 2 was so good that another run through that game is worth it."
I'm gonna be honest, is there any point to tracking reviews like this? Pretty much any game with a strong marketing scheme and/or brand name is guaranteed a good score these days.

the scores are useless, but the content is usually interesting.
and your statement is kind of cynical, have you ever just considered that there are a lot of good games that come out these days?

I just don't really see the point is all. It's Uncharted. There will be platforming and a cool moments and Nathan Drake. Unless all the reviews are like, 7/10 (and it's kind of sad that 7/10 is a death sentence in our current rating scale), I'm gonna buy it and decide for myself how it stacks up to the previous one. A bunch of 9/10s and 10/10s is kind of expected and hasn't meant much since Grand Theft Auto IV.
anyway, I think there's a bigger issue here. if UC3 is just UC2 with more cool explosions, it isn't going to resonate with me the same way. is that really worth a 10? on an individual basis, yeah, it's a great game. but when I think of a 10, I think of genre defining, best game ever kinds of games. UC2 and Arkham Asylum were that. but when you follow it up with the same tropes and hit the same notes? I don't see that as 10/10 material.
I dunno, I'm thinking too hard about review scores anyway. hopefully Skyward Sword is a game that can redefine and shape a genre like I would expect from a 10/10.
Yeah I feel like in this gen reviewers are looking to see their expectations met rather than challenged. That's not necessarily the wrong way to approach professional game reviewing, but... it certainly isn't how I'd do it.

Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!)
I agree completely tranny, from Giant Bomb's review scale, the 5 makes sense, from what I read of the IGN review, the story is a lot better. We'll see if that holds up (the Joystiq one didn't seem to be as big of a fan of the story). From a MP standpoint, I def thought that was a big upgrade, but we'll see. I've never been as big of a UC fan as the board, hopefully this one converts me into more of a fan, but I kind of doubt it, but I think it will be a worthy day 1 purchase.

""the AI isn't especially smart but they throw a grenade like tom brady""
lol
I am imagining the AI crowding around the grenade thrower and keeping your bullets off of him, giving him 10 seconds to wait until you are in the perfect position to receive the grenade.

Kinda. They've patched it quite a bit already. I'd say it's perfect as is.
downplaying Batman too! aka the superior action game
though I do think that Arkham City is a more fundamental change than the reviews let on. it's like a AC1 to AC2 jump in terms of diversity, only it wasn't stale and repetitive in Asylum.

It'll be the day when the majority actually uses 5 as an "average" score instead of 7
