I'm not terribly sure what purpose it fills

I mean it might have applications in robotics? But I don't know enough about the advanced aspects of those fields to know for sure

Kinda got ninja'd, but yeah, this is a pretty big step forward. It also potentially hints at the existence of other types of life out there, too.

Yeah, it shows that they can exist

But aside from that knowledge (Which doesn't do us that much good unless we're bent on creating them for whatever reason), what does it do for us?

wonder what this is gonna do to organic chemistry!

But aside from that knowledge (Which doesn't do us that much good unless we're bent on creating them for whatever reason), what does it do for us?

the fact that all living things are carbon-based is one of the elementary laws of biology that everyone learns in high school, how is this not a huge deal?

and as for practical applications, give it a while for other scientists to run their own. science works when scientists come up with crazy yet somewhat plausible s*** and try to disprove themselves. people are going to push the extents of this new knowledge and eventually something useful's gonna come out of it.

Alright, this is what I was looking for <_<

I mean I know as far as theoretical and scientific stuff goes it's a big deal (And understandably so, like the Faster than Light thing from a couple weeks ago), but...

Didn't we already learn a few months ago that there can be living things that aren't carbon-based? Didn't they find some microorganisms out there that were arsenic-based?

Even if it does nothing it's still something we should do to see if it's possible.

They weren't "arsenic-based". The scientists believed the bacteria were using arsenic where all organisms usually only use phosphorus.

And those results haven't been replicated with any success.

Basically, there was something wrong with the research.

They weren't arsenic-based but some of the basic structures had arsenic replacing carbon. it was still a very minor amount of arsenic. Still amazing though, I don't know what came of that though.
