For those of you in relationships, how does your religion and your partners factor into how it works? I'm assuming we have a much high concentration of atheists here than the outside world, but I'm assuming I can still find some decent answers from you guys.

Religion's important to me, so I kinda need to date girls with at least moderately similar beliefs to mine, or it's just not going to work.

You have to both be either similarly minded, open minded, or generally apathetic. I'd say my gf and I are both agnostic, but she's more leaning toward theism and I lean more toward atheism. That being said, I doubt I'd be able to date a super religious chick, but I could date someone who believes in God but doesn't make it a very big deal in her life. Granted as people age, they turn to religion as something of comfort, so someone who is fairly apathetic in their 20s may become someone who doesn't miss a Sunday in their 60s.

It's definitely important to agree on. If both of you care about your religion but don't share the same religion, you'll inevitably have problems. Kids will be a major issue, at very least.

Under the assumption that every person on the world is in a relationship, sure, but if you factor in the single people, it's possible (though not realistic at all).

My wife and I are both Atheist. I was raised Jewish and we get together with my family for Rosh Hashana, Passover & Chanuka. She was raised some form of Christian (i guess) but her family is in no way "religious", her mother likes to have us over on Easter as an excuse to make a ham but Jesus has very little to do with it. I'll cook Christmas Eve Dinner at her parents house most years but everyone celebrates Christmas

Only issue I had is when I dated a girl and later found out she was pretty religious. As in, when she finally got accepted into Loyola, she said it was God's doing and without God and prayer she wouldn't have been accepted.

Overall, it was fine, we acknowledged our difference in beliefs and were fine with it. However, I will admit it was a factor in why I broke up with her.

For short-term dating, there's no reason to put that much weight on if your religious beliefs match, but for long relationships it can be a bit of an issue. Mainly, I found myself having to catch myself before making comments and that sort of thing. It kind of created subjects and such that I basically kept as "off limits" in my mind simply to avoid arguing, and our views differed a lot on things. Also, there was the physical part where, as I said, she was very Christian and was not open at all to anything past making out. That and it got kind of annoying constantly seeing bible quotes on her facebook status.

Loyola Maryland (Baltimore). Might be because I'm in grad school and really only associate with others in my program but there's only maybe 2 girls out of the 18 people in my program that strike me as religious. Maybe a few others that are Christmas/Easter type Christians.

I really can't imagine this even being an issue.

Like, you can't go into every relationship thinking "Her life view has to be compatible with mine because we are absolutely going to be together forever."

If you enjoy being with her, let that take precedence and go from there.

I've never been in a (serious) relationship with a non-atheist. I don't think I could have an equal relationship with someone who allowed such a gaping logical flaw as religion in their thought processes.

Then I'm guessing it's not a big deal to you and/or you've never dated someone for whom it is.

There are some things where you need to be very compatible with the other in order to have a happy relationship, and that's one of them.

I mean, if you're not in a very serious relationship and just dating around, then it's obviously not a big deal, but I wouldn't recommend getting into a serious relationship with someone who has a pretty different view on the matter than you do.

This is exactly what I was talking about.

I can't imagine is starting a relationship off on a level where religion matters. I'm not talking about just sleeping around with people or whatever, but there are levels between serious relationships and casual sex. Ideally you should be making your way towards a serious relationship, not starting out there.

All these "deal breakers" usually work themselves out by the time the relationship does reach that level, for better or for worse.

Smitelf just posted exactly what I was going to say, although it was in a much nicer tone. I have such a negative view of people that can follow most major religions that it would just never work. But I feel that I should clarify I just mean the most common western religions... Christians, Catholics, Jews, Muslims (I know there's a word for these but I can't remember it) and some others. I haven't researched every religion so there are some that I obviously can't make judgments on, but on the other side I wouldn't really have issues with some forms of Hinduism or Buddhism.

I guess I've just gotten lucky with everyone I've been serious with as they've all been agnostic more or less.

Because relationships shouldn't be viewed in a utilitarian way? Why is a relationship a waste of time if it never gets serious?

I honestly don't feel like I'd really care that much about a guy having different beliefs than me. Maybe if he was like... super up his own ass about it and trying to convert me/our eventual children. That'd be a huge problem. But if he simply had different beliefs but kept the same relaxed attitude about it all that I have, it wouldn't have to be a problem.

It would be a bit of an issue for me I think. Depends on what parts of their religion they take to heart though really, I doubt I'd want to be with anyone who thought it was proper and correct for me to go to hell and be miserable for all eternity because I don't agree with them, for example. I don't see why someone being a theist of some form would on its own be a deal breaker, but a lot of major religions come with philosophical positions I can't see co-existing with my own, or that I can't see co-existing with any sort of genuine care for me
