Who's expecting anything but Link vs. Ganon to win? In fact, is anyone expecting different results from character battles (effectively, you just remove the weaker character in the rivalry, a.k.a. the "villain")?

Your second sentence is pretty much the same idea, that if characters who have already met before meet in this contest, the whole thing is a waste of time.

Cloud + Sephiroth might be stronger than Link + Ganondorf, but I agree that the ending will be more or less predictable, it's the journey that will be entertaining.

The funny thing is, I'm not sure this contest won't be the opposite. Cloud Sephiroth might upset Link Ganon if Ganon, being the weakest, adulterates Link enough. (Or if the "rival" thing makes people consider the story more. Or whatever other factor.)
My main problem is that Link Ganon and Cloud Sephiroth will destroy everybody up until they meet in the finals, which is predictable. I agree that the field will have lots of new characters, which is great, even though they are basically going to be trash tier fodder. So when two new fodders duke it out, we should have some real matches. And I suspect that certain groups like Sub Zero Scorpion and Red Blue will be a bit stronger with the pair than alone, so that will also be a shake-up, unless they have some predictable route where they steamroll some no-names before losing to Link Ganon.
Won't know tell we see the bracket, so we may very well be in for some solid matches; I was just hoping for a contest without the heaviest of the heavy hitters (Link, Mario, Cloud, Sephiroth, Samus, Snake) that will always be 1-seeds, will always win their division, and will continue to reduce the possibility of matches between folks like Vincent, Tifa, Squall, Auron, Yoshi, MissingNo, Pikachu, etc who are just below them in strength.

I picked the wrong winner, but 4chan announced they were going to push for Launchpad to win right after the contest started. But that doesn't really invalidate my claim that 4chan was going to do whatever they wanted with this contest because GameSpot doesn't care enough to make it a contest of their own.
4chan announced "This is what we're going to do," and then they did exactly that.
If you think that is either unpredictable or entertaining, then you may want to reconsider who you're laughing at.

JFYI, Reddit had a MUCH bigger pull this contest than 4chan (we've seen how "strong" 4chan is here and in the last 2 Gamespot contests - they can get a character to the quarterfinals at best, then they collapse).

And yet it wasn't anywhere near that in the last 2 contests. They just got lucky this time, they picked cool enough characters that a lot of people joined the bandwagon.
