I just got home and have only read the main topic so far. a lot of this will probably be covered elsewhere.

- what constitutes a "rivalry"? does it have to be main protagonist-main antagonist? can it be a less hostile rivalry? for example, I'd say Tifa/Aeris is a pretty notable rivalry. but neither one is an "antagonist". I hope those two make it since there are probably a single digit number of notable entrants in this contest.

The database has allowed both Sonic/Robotnik and Sonic/Knuckles, so I'm guessing it doesn't have to be a main hero/villain rivalry. It's also allowed Snake/Liquid, Snake/Ocelot, and Snake/Big Boss.

It allows Ryu/Ken, too.

- this contest should come down to three sets of characters - Link vs. Ganondorf, Cloud vs. Sephiroth and Mario vs. Sonic. if Mario and Bowser get paired up then this is a bad contest. it's pretty similar in the series contest in that only three series' on this website are worth much. I saw that a lot of people thought Link vs. Ganondorf is a guaranteed winner but I think that's way off.

seriously, does anybody here vote Link vs. Ganondorf over Mario vs. Sonic?

- I think my favourite hero/antagonist rivalry is Yuri Hyuga vs. SH1's main antagonist. I'll probably nominate that despite the fact that it would get slaughtered. in a contest this goofy, I'll go with things I really like rather than contest strength.

The only way Link/Ganon wins over Mario/Sonic is (assuming the latter makes it in over Mario/Bowser of course) if the Ninty fanbase is truly composed of Nintendrones and lays down a colossal double-SFF nuke on Mario/Sonic. Ideally that won't happen though!

The problem with this contest is that the rivalry itself doesn't matter. All people are going to care about is the strongest character in each duo. (Link in Link vs. Ganondorf)

It just says as long as they appear in same game or series. The Olympics games and Brawl are more than enough

Sounds right; it's not clear to me at all which of those is strongest.

Link is the strongest individual character, but he's paired with the weakest individual character.
Cloud/Sephiroth if we just summed their X-Stats would be the strongest, but who knows if it works that way.
Mario/Sonic is probably the most iconic rivalry in games.

Snake vs. Liquid / Snake vs. Ocelot / Snake vs. Big Boss. I guess it has to be Liquid but I'd take Ocelot. Big Boss, blech.
Samus vs. Mother Brain / Samus vs. Ridley. I guess Ridley is obvious.
Mega Man vs. Dr. Wily or Mega Man vs. Zero? I guess that would be X vs. Zero so both could make it. Mega Man vs. Dr. Wily is whatever in my mind. might as well do Dr. Light vs. Dr. Wily. there we go - Mega Man vs. Proto Man, Dr. Light vs. Dr. Wily, X vs. Zero. Hahaha, this will never happen.
Frog vs. Magus is probably better than Crono vs. anybody.
Final Fantasy is interesting, I guess. Squall vs. Seifer is an obvious one, as is Zidane vs. Kuja. FF10 doesn't really have anything of note. Tifa/Aeris I already touched on but I feel like Cloud vs. Zack could be a fun one. then again, Cloud has to have Sephiroth.
Pokemon? Mew vs. Mewtwo maybe? human Pokemon characters can gtfo.
I'm sure people are fantasizing about fictional characters too. I can't think of too much that really qualifies as big.

X vs. Sigma is also a possibility.

FFX will get Tidus/Jecht or Yuna/Seymour, but neither of them will amount to much. Auron doesn't have a rival of his own, unfortunately.

as for Link/Ganon, I really don't think they're a good answer. there's nothing iconic there. people like Ganondorf because he fights Link, not because he's a character people really get behind. it's nothing like Cloud vs. Sephiroth.

Mario vs. Sonic should probably be The One, though.

Eh, it won't be Auron/Jecht. They're characterized as friends throughout all of FFX. The only time you see any sort of antagonism is in the Jecht Spheres.

It doesn't really matter that it isn't 'iconic,' although it absolutely is, it's the Zelda option. That matters more than anything. You can rationalize Cloud / Seph and Mario / Sonic, but many people did that in the series contest, too.

Big Boss/Boss, yeah probably, but even then it's just a sequel. I was thinking a fresh rivalry.

my first thought on the matter is actually two nameless characters: Chell and Glados. those two stand out more than anything else in my memory. you start reaching for things like Kratos/Zeus or Dante/Vergil.

I submitted a feedback ticket to Bacon suggesting the idea of a 64 item bracket with 12 hour matches for round 1 and 24 hour matches for round 2 and beyond. That would result in a 47 day contest. I don't know if we'll have time to fit in a 63 day contest with 24 hour matches throughout the entire contest.

I can't see a 128 item bracket being possible as there are only 72 suggestions in the nomination database and some of them involve the same character multiple times.
