Just to ask, is a "sucky final boss" supposed to be the norm for modern action games? I've heard that Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2 suffer from this problem, and I know that Resident Evil 4 does.

Devil May Cry 3's final boss is the best I've played. It nails the atmosphere and the setting, the opponent is a natural one for the game to end on, the fight is a culmination of everything good about the game, it's tough without being cheap, it's incredibly fast and frenetic. It's also is a great final boss in an action game, which I think are much rarer than great final bosses in RPGs (I think the only RPG I'm a big fan that doesn't have a great final fight is FFIX, whereas there's not many action games I like that I'd say have one). The only challenge I can think of to DMC3 is MGS3. I'd say it wins on setting/atmosphere - both visuals and sound are superb, and the scenario is more than worthwhile - but while it's a solid fight, it's not as special - too formulaic.

Bosses in platformers I often find to be weird. Not necessarily bad, but just strange. The enemy will inevitably have an incredible volley of attacks to throw out in order, followed by it waiting for you to hit it!

Can't agree with that. If you haven't been spoiled, both story and gameplay wise, it's actually a great final boss, and a template for what a Mega Man final boss should be.

MM2's final boss is terrible. It punishes you too much for actually finding the way to beat it, which is annoying as hell, and once you KNOW how to beat it you romp through it because it telegraphs its patterns a ton.

SPOILERS FOR MM2

This is assuming we're talking about the Wily hologram of course. If I forgot something after it sorry.

FFX has one of the best ending sequences ever.

It has the very challenging and satisfying REAL final boss,

I actually don't think that boss is all that well-designed. In that...people who explore the world map and do the bonus extras before the boss tend to find the boss a complete joke, and people who don't level often get stuck on him.

This is a combination of...
*Regeneration (dealing more damage than he regens can be a problem for low-level parties)
*Knockback (you waste 50% of a turn. Problem is, if the boss is twice as fast as you then he'll get his next turn before you get your turn that he delayed, and then he can delay your turn again. Again, only really an issue for lower-level slow parties).
*Petrify and Shatter (once petrified a character can be permanently removed from a battle by being attacked a second time. Normally you'll have lots of extra time to de-petrify them, but if your party is slow the timing can be very tight).
*Tidus' Talk Mechanics (you can delay the boss from acting for a few turns...which a high-damage party can use to blitz the boss, but to a low damage party, two turns is a drop in the bucket).

Ideally, the boss should have used tricks that were more level-independent. Gravity moves, status moves other than petrify, hasting itself instead of using knockback, or just a knockback that knocked back a fixed amount of CT rather than 50% of your recharge speed.

As-is, there's a sweetspot where it's an excellent fight, and then a lot of cases where it's overly easy or a serious wall (at least for a first-time player).

They rushed the game to get it out by deadline, so the final battle with Zeus was one of the last things they did... and you can tell. Sad too, because the planned Gaia battle followed by a better Zeus battle would have been incredible.

Radiant Silvergun's final boss actually fits well with the context of the game.

And, since the game is now available on XBox Live, for those who have XBox 360's (I don't, but at least I have the Saturn version), the game is a great buy at 1200 points($15 I believe), as opposed to paying $100+ for the Saturn version.

The number of final bosses that really reach "good" status in the FF series is...Exdeath and Kefka. Maybe <FFXIII spoilers>, but that's a bit of a stretch. It's not a series where the final battles tend to feel very awesome to me.

I have to disagree horribly with XIII. I thought the ending was a total Deus Ex Machina after the fight with, er, the next-to-last boss.

Disappointed that it took that long for MGS to come up, and no one even mentioned MGS4? What the hell. Of course MGS3 had the best final boss, but MGS4 had a pretty god damn awesome final boss as well. MGS1 and 2 did as well, but less so.

Other than that, I more or less agree that final bosses usually aren't all that good, but it's understandable. They're the last hurdle to tackle before the end, and unless the game is all about the gameplay, you're really just wanting to finish the game at that point, so it sucks to have a really tough boss that takes several tries to beat. But then it's also sad to have a boss that isn't really great in any way. There has to be a good balance that is VERY difficult to achieve. Yet Kojima somehow managed it with four games, so maybe game devs should take some lessons from him.

Eh. Story-wise, I guess it's a cool would be "plot twist," but gameplay-wise it's definitely one of the weaker and more boring bosses of the game, maybe even the series (then again, I hate a good deal of MM2's bosses in general). The only thing new I'd say it brings to the table is that all future final-final bosses will be weak to the weapon you liked the least.

I would only say JFA has a really good 'final boss'.

PW1's is cool, but too similar to 1-4's boss to be that amazing.
PW3's comes right after the climax of 3-5 and felt too much like a resolution as opposed to an actual great battle.
AJ's you barely do anything during.
AAI's has the same problem as PW3's in that it comes after the high point of the case, plus it never ends.

Yeah, definitely seconding this.

PW3 has the weird situation where I would regard the "final boss" as... the one who isn't actually final. It does make the -actual- final rather weak, though.

Come to think of it, DMC3 feels kinda similar, which is one of the reasons I don't really get hype for that one in this thread, but I assume that has more to do with gameplay (which I can see though still don't agree with; I thought the fight was fairly simple).
