I'm confused. With the exception of 'iron', I still pronounce all those examples as they are written on the left..

I've always wondered about i-ern. There are some things we say oddly that I at least understand where it comes from, whether it's from another language, or out of pure laziness. (I happen to work in a liberry.) But iern never made sense to me. And I can't even force myself to say i-run. Ironic, np, but not i-run.

Maybe I should just resort to calling it ferrum.

This is the single biggest flaw with the English language.

No, not that words change pronunciation over time - but rather that they refuse to change the spelling to reflect the changes.

In Norway, we have an official bureau that constantly revises how our language is written, to make sure words are always spelled the way they're pronounced. This should be standard for all languages to be honest.

I guess it's harder to change a world language like English when its writing is so deeply integrated in the minds of people everywhere, but there really is no excuse for having, for instance, each vowel be pronounced in 6 different ways depending on the word, with absolutely no indication of when to use each pronunciation. Wheat, sweat, steak, ear. Same letters, 4 completely different wovel sounds. W T F.

This sounds annoying, to be honest. Constantly having to rethink how you spell words because people start pronouncing them differently seems impractical; people would probably wouldn't bother to learn the new spellings, and we'd have different people spelling the same word different ways.
