From: colliding | #048 If they had left Phoenix out of Apollo Justice entirely, the game would've been decent. It just would've been kind of bland instead of offensive.
And the worst part is he really didn't need to be in it. The Phoenix in that game may as well be a completely different character. They could have just named him something different, and the game would just be a lackluster installment in the series instead of a complete trampling of it.

Apollo Justice is a good answer because it actually ruins the character established in the first three games.
The best example I can think of though is Lunar: DS. It actively ruins the main focus of the story in the first game. Before playing that game, I never thought it was possible to ruin my memory of other games in the series simply by existing, but the story in it sort of undid how I felt about the story in the first game.
Still love the first two Lunar games though.

Some good nods in this topic. As a huge fan of the game, I'd crown Chrono Cross as king of this award for the way it handles the original cast.

Personally, I maintain that the "consequences of time travel" approach Cross took, as well as the "childhood fairytale gone horribly awry" vibe, was actually a step up from Trigger, but there's no denying that it impacts the enjoyment of the first game.
And for the record, Matrix: Reloaded was an excellent movie only slightly worse than the original. Revolutions? 0/10, worst of all time, etc.

Yeah. I mean, Chrono Cross is an absolutely beautiful game, with great graphics and the best original soundtrack of all time. At points, its storyline and characters (though there are too many) are very engaging. It just completely trashes the tone set by the original game unfortunately, for some sadistic reason.
And you forgot to mention the Dalton/Masamune/Porre stuff. I maintain that there needs to be a third Chrono game to set the world right again.
Hmm, yeah, actively detracting from the original is tough.
I guess from the "why would you want to play the original again" standpoint, you could include Sonic Adventure 2, because it was so much better than the first Sonic Adventure, but that's kind of a weak justification. (Also, I played SA2 first, because I didn't have a Dreamcast and SA2 was ported to the Gamecube before SA1 was.)

Cause why would I want to play the first one again?
Why wouldn't you? It's better than the sequel, after all.
Agreed so much. SMG2 was absolutely awful. Actually, come to think of it, New Super Mario Bros. might be an example of a sequel that detracts from the original (SMB1), because it was such a train wreck that the obvious parallels make SMB1 harder to enjoy in favor of everything from SMB3 onwards.

I love Chrono Cross and consider it a better game than Chrono Trigger but I'd have to agree that because of the depressing themes in Chrono Cross that are in direct contrast to Chrono Trigger's more uplifting spirit that it detracts from Trigger once you've played it.
I consider Apollo Justice to be a competent and particularly apt deconstruction of the Phoenix Wright games. The thing is that people like the games perfectly fine when they're played straight.

It's not a sequel, but Parks and Recreation has made The Office borderline unwatchable for me. Both are workplace comedies created by Greg Daniels, but P&R has every single positive quality The Office has, and none of its (many) flaws. Once you visit Pawnee, Scranton just seems boring as ****.

I disagree. Crisis Core was pretty engaging, and even though people knew what was going to happen at the end of the game, it was still very moving.
Besides, it actually turns Sephiroth into a real character.

I don't understand this at all.
