Hmm, yeah, actively detracting from the original is tough.

I guess from the "why would you want to play the original again" standpoint, you could include Sonic Adventure 2, because it was so much better than the first Sonic Adventure, but that's kind of a weak justification. (Also, I played SA2 first, because I didn't have a Dreamcast and SA2 was ported to the Gamecube before SA1 was.)

Agreed so much. SMG2 was absolutely awful. Actually, come to think of it, New Super Mario Bros. might be an example of a sequel that detracts from the original (SMB1), because it was such a train wreck that the obvious parallels make SMB1 harder to enjoy in favor of everything from SMB3 onwards.
