Some good nods in this topic. As a huge fan of the game, I'd crown Chrono Cross as king of this award for the way it handles the original cast.

Personally, I maintain that the "consequences of time travel" approach Cross took, as well as the "childhood fairytale gone horribly awry" vibe, was actually a step up from Trigger, but there's no denying that it impacts the enjoyment of the first game.
And for the record, Matrix: Reloaded was an excellent movie only slightly worse than the original. Revolutions? 0/10, worst of all time, etc.
