Well, the Nuzlocke boom seems to have died down again, which I guess is good because it means less competition, but while I had been wanting to do one, I'm too attached to most of my old game data to let it go. So I guess it's time to dig out an older game...I didn't have quite as much of the Pokédex data finished in Yellow Version, so that seems ideal. Let's just double-check...

Oh, lovely. Turns out my sister saved over my game data anyway, so the save file has 0 badges and only one Pokémon. That makes this so much easier.

Of course, this being Nuzlocke, I guess I have to wait awhile now that I've announced my intentions so as to let other people sign up to get their names in.

It basically could not have been any worse. Although I maintain that the flash-aways for that season were pretty solid, the main plot was ughhhhhh

Okay, so we start out, naturally, with the naming of the trainer, Tsunami. Next up is the naming of the rival, and since very few people have signed up so far, I'm not wasting a slot on him, so he'll be "Loser".

Wow. It's been so long I forgot what it was like to start out one of these things and not have Mom stop you before you exit the house to give you some sort of tutorial. Wait, house... I go back and withdraw the Potion, just in case. Time to get things started...Oak captures a Pikachu. We head to the lab, and Oak tries to give me a Pokémon, but Loser snatches it, and I get Pikachu instead. I name it Dante, and I battle against Loser and his Eevee. This being a "first battle", I go all-out with Thundershock. Mercifully, Eevee Tail Whips twice and only succeeds at one of them, as the first Tackle (before any Tail Whips) took out a third of Dante's HP and the second (after both the successful and the failed one) took him down to 1 HP. Has anyone ever lost a Nuzlocke in the very first battle? Well, we survived; I'd hate to lose the use of Pikachu right away. (As for what I'd do if I had lost: I'd keep it around (but not use it) just long enough to get another Pokémon by way of throwing Poké Balls at Pokémon that were at full health, and then release it as per Nuzlocke rules.)

I was kind of hoping that I could avoid Pokémon completely until I had Poké Balls just to get the ambiguity out of it, but I run into a single Rattata on the way to Viridian City. It's a good thing that Pokémon encountered before getting your first Poké Balls don't count, too, because Thundershock crits for a OHKO. I then try to get back without running into Pokémon--far be it for me to exploit technicalities--and run into another Rattata as soon as I set foot in the one patch of grass that is unavoidable even when heading from Viridian to Pallet. Again Dante crits it for a OHKO. Please let him calm down when it comes time for us to actually try to catch one. Pokédex get!

...Oh, right, that was GSC where the aide gave us Poké Balls. So I get to make another trip to Viridian still unable to catch Pokémon. Wild Pidgey, level 4, actually becomes the first thing to survive the first hit. (The OHKO-ed Rattatas were level 2.) A Level 3 Rattata also manages to survive, but does no damage as it uses Tail Whip. Now in Viridian City, time to get Poké Balls and start expanding the team! I buy ten Poké Balls, 5 antidotes, and two Potions, almost exhausting my funds. Route 1...it's another level 2 Rattata. Given what Dante's been doing to them so far, I try one Poké Ball at full health, then Thundershock when that fails...no crit! Even though he didn't officially say "sign up for naming", Bosh gets this one. Time to go to Route 2. I move Bosh to the top of the lineup.

...Awesome. Nidoran male, level 4. Bosh Tackles three times, one of them a crit, and the Nidoran is successfully caught and named "Hydras". Time to heal up and ever-so-carefully venture onto Route 22. (Carefully, because if I trigger the second battle with Loser, I'll probably get my whole team routed.) It takes an unusually long time for anything to appear, but when it does...it's a Mankey! Bosh leads off with a Tackle, but is already getting beaten pretty badly so I switch to Hydras; luckily Mankey Leers on the switching turn. Two Scratches have Hydras in poor health, but Mankey's low enough to be caught...no, it escapes from the first Poké Ball thrown! And that's all for Hydras. I send Dante out, and...again Mankey escapes. I Thundershock it...another m*********ing critical hit. So now I've got no Nidoran and no Mankey. My only hope for getting past Pewter without losing completely is to get a Caterpie in Viridian Forest and evolve it to Butterfree.

Wait, what? Who put this trainer here? Since when was there a Lass in Viridian Forest? Luckily Dante is boss, though it manages to get another critical after already taking the opponent down to the red. First Thundershock against her second Pokémon paralyzes, so I send Bosh out for some more leveling, being careful to monitor health in order to use potions at the right time...and get victimized by another critical. Why are there so many criticals, anyway?

Team:
Dante Lv. 7 Pikachu

Dead:
Hydras Lv. 4 Nidoran Male
Bosh Lv. 4 Rattata

Yeah, I know. Really thought I'd weakened that Mankey enough to catch it; can't believe it failed twice.

Brief update: Got a Caterpie at level 4; named it Anagram. Anagram is currently at level 5; Dante's still level 7. Going to be a fairly long and drawn-out training session now, because I'm out of routes to capture Pokémon on before Pewter and with the duo that I've got, I want both of them to be at least level 15 before I challenge Brock--enough to get Sleep Powder/Stun Spore/Confusion for Anagram and Double Team/Quick Attack for Dante.

One arduous, but rarely dangerous, training montage later, Dante and Anagram are ready to take on Loser. First up is Dante vs. Lv. 9 Spearow. Lv. 9 Dante does what he does best--crit faces. OHKO (also Super Effective, of course), and it's time for Anagram to take on Eevee, Eevee's level 8, so I start Ana off with a Harden. Eevee tries to use Sand-Attack and fails. Next, confusion takes out a good chunk of Eevee's health, and with Harden in place, Eevee's Tackle did 5 damage (28HP left) Another trade of Confusion for Tackle, then after Anagram's third confusion, Eevee is tackling no more. No new level-ups from that battle, so here's the team as of the end of Rival Battle #2:

Anagram: Lv. 10 Butterfree
Dante: Lv. 9 Pikachu

Dead:
Hydras (Lv. 4 Nidoran male, died on Route 22 against Wild Mankey)
Bosh (Lv. 4 Rattatta, died in Viridian Forest against a trainer's Nidoran male)

Failed to capture:
Level 5 Mankey (escaped two Poké Balls, then got critted by Dante's Thundershock.)

A little short of our level goals, we decide to take on the Junior Trainer. Anagram easily routs hm, but doesn't gain a level. Finally, we reach our goals. Against Level 10 Geodude, Anagram tries and fails to put it to sleep with Sleep Powedr (5 damage from Tackle), then succeeds...Full Heal what? And he can use it the same turn I cause the condition? Guess I'll have to have him awake for this next part...6 straight hardens. Followed by a potion, of course, because Anagram's still taking damage, albeit more slowly. Now time for those Confusions...damn Geodude has crap Special. Well, since status attacks won't work, it's Confusion straight out for Onix. First one does confuse, though it doesn't attack itself (failed Bind). Second one gets the win! No Pokémon lost, only one potion used (which wasn't strictly necessary, either; Anagram would've survived anyway)

Pokémon:
Dante: Level 15 Pikachu
Anagram: Level 15 Butterfree

Going to continue this in the morning. Or afternoon, if I sleep too late.

Hoo boy. Less-than-restful night of sleep, with some weird Nuzlocke-related dreams. Involved fractional levels and catching Pokémon from other trainers. Anyway, after training them for the battle with Brock, Anagram and Dante are more than capable of routing the trainers on Route 3, and barely take any damage before getting to the grassy area. First step in, it's...a Rattata. Well, I had one at one point, but it died, so I guess that's fair game. The bugger's at Level 12, which is definitely much better than I expected--remember back in RBY when you could find level 3 Jigglypuff there?--and is annoying as hell. Anagram's first Sleep Powder misses, then the next two have the Rattata waking up instantly. Finally get it to stay asleep and catch it, naturally naming it Bosh II. I send it to face the remaining trainers. A level 10 Rattata takes out nearly half its health with one tackle, albeit after a Tail Whip, so I let it stay in to start the battle with the Lass's second Pokémon, a Nidoran male (same species that killed Bosh I!), but immediately switch to Anagram afterwards. Anna easily routs it with Confusion.

Everybody talks about the "I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear!" Youngster, but nobody mentions that the other Youngster on the route introduces himself with "Hey! You're not wearing shorts!", which I think is even funnier. He has a lone Level 14 Spearow, so I switch to...wait, wrong Pokémon! ...And wow. Anagram took only 16 damage from Peck (it has 47 HP). Finally with the right one out, Dante's first Thundershock paralyzes and the second gets the knockout.

Battle with a Lass with a level 14 Jigglypuff. Bosh II leads off with Tail Whip before going at it with Quick Attack. Gets two off before being put to sleep by Sing. Lacking Awakening, I switch to Dante, who finishes the job with a crit Quick Attack. I head back to Pewter to heal up and buy five each of Awakening and Paralyze Heal. I then proceed to reach Mt. Moon without encountering anything else. A few steps in, I meet a level 6 Zubat. Bosh II tackles it once, and I throw a Poké Ball, which fails. I throw another Poké Ball and despite it having slightly more HP now (Leech Life), this one succeeds. (Goddamnit Mankey!) Welcome to the team, Edwards! Now, time for some more training.

Edwards: Level 6 Zubat
Bosh II: Level 12 Rattata
Dante: Level 16 Pikachu
Anagram: Level 16 Butterfree

So far, everything I've encountered on Route 3 is either level 8 or level 9, mostly Mankey and Spearow but there have been Sandshrew. I still have no idea how I ended up getting a level 12 Rattata as my capture from this route. It's somewhat slow sailing as Bosh II seems incompetent, needing to be healed after facing just one level 8 Sandshrew--Dante's been routing the Spearows and Anagram's been taking care of the Mankeys. Edwards is up to Level 8 but still sucks because this is RBY, where Zubat aren't really useful until level 15.

...Wow, it's actually a level 10 Spearow! (Honestly, how the crap did I end up with a level 12 Rattata?)

Okay, finally found some other wild Rattata, and based on seeing Bosh II's interactions with them, I have come to the conclusion that Rattata have very low Defense. Two Quick Attacks is enough to take out a level 10 Rattata even when neither one is a crit. Also, I head back to Pewter for a few more Poké Balls, just in case whatever I meet on Route 4 gives me trouble.

Whoa. Finally found another level 12--a Spearow. It actually survives Dante's first Thundershock, barely, and also gets paralyzed. Were this not Nuzlocke, it would've been a perfect result, an easy capture. Just for lulz, the ensuing Quick Attack critted the poor beast. Once Edwards hit level 10 and learned Supersonic, I crept back into Mt. Moon to pick up TM 12, for Water Gun. I never understood why such a weak and pathetic move was a TM back in Gen I, but it does make Bosh II marginally more useful. Hey, remember how Bug used to be super effective against poison? Yeah, watching Edwards go at it with another Zubat was quite lulzy (remember also how in Gen I, "It's super effective!" would show up if you hit a dual-type with a move that one of its types was weak to but the other was strong against). I started trying to get a Supersonic done (and eventually succeeded), but noticed that Edwards seemed to be doing multiple damage (though only healing 1 HP each time), while the enemy could only do one on normal hits. Unfortunately, the enemy managed a few 3-damage crits, including two in a row at one point, so I switched to Dante before things got out of hand. For a battle against a level 7 Zubat.

I have yet to see an opponent attack itself when confused. Luckily, it doesn't matter and Bosh II manages to take minimal damage anyway when facing a Level 12 Rattata that Edwards confused. Healing up anyway, then trying to get a bit more rest.

Edwards: Level 11 Zubat
Dante: Level 16 Pikachu
Anagram: Level 17 Butterfree
Bosh II: Level 13 Rattata

I died on the first rival battle, worst Nuzlocke ever.

The game itself is no longer the only source of bad omens for this Nuzlocke run. The only GBA SP/NDS charger that we can find in this household seems to have just up and stopped working properly--I'd been having problems before with the SP charging, so I tested it with my DS to see if that's where the problem was. Seriously, how could we end up with no chargers? I had the SP, both my sister and I had DSes, and I actually had to get a second one because I lost my first. This means that I have pretty much no method to play GBA games at the moment (or at least, not for very long). Of course, this isn't a GBA game...

Yeah. Until I get a working charger, I'm going to be attempting to continue this on my battered old GBC. The one that's missing its battery case cover. Uh...

Wait, never mind. I have a better idea. My N64 works just fine, so for the continuation of this Nuzlocke, I'll grab my copy of Pokémon Stadium and play it on Game Boy Tower. Perfect.

Anyway, nothing much to report before I noticed that my SP hadn't charged as expected. Dante and Edwards each leveled up once.

Okay, scratch all that. I'm just incompetent. I tried plugging the charger into a different outlet, and it started working. Since the outlet I'd had it in was on a power strip and other devices on the power strip had been charging properly, I tried that outlet again...and it worked. So the only possible explanation is that I had plugged it in improperly, and apparently failed to notice...and somehow was able to figure it out while under the influence of alcohol (only one drink, but I'm so slightly built that one drink is all it takes for me to start getting tipsy.) Still, the fact that it's uncharged means I won't be continuing the training tonight, so we'll pick this up tomorrow.

...is the sixth season of LOST seriously that bad? I mean I always assumed it'd be terrible because uber-serialized shows often fall apart during the final stretch (so utterly unfortunately) but people just won't shut up about that season. I mean damn!

One of the best seasons of the show. A great closing season and a fantastic ending. People are...yeah, people are people. I've barely ever heard of anybody watching the show on DVD after the fact who didn't watch it live having the dumb problems that people whine about.

And now it's looking like there's a chance I'll be able to update over the weekend anyway. Now I'm really wishing I'd restarted it yesterday...
