Yay I'm in a topic title.

I mean I overreacted, yeah, but it was also an exaggeration. It was just a good twist and I'm really excited to see what will happen next.

On another note, reading Schism right now. That girl literally has a pink lightsaber.

KoolAid's Weekly Comic Reviews!

(Scale: Excellent-Very Good-Good-Okay-Eh-Awful-Crap)

Uncanny X-Force #12: Halo talked(read: screamed) about it last topic, but I can go in more spoilerly details. It's a big story arc, so there's a lot of set-up, but Remender is moving the characters closer together, so he can break them apart later in the narrative. Most of the book's tenure has been getting in the heads of the other members of X-Force, so its nice to see Logan in the limelight here. That's that strange connection between Jean and Logan, even from other dimensions entirely. Two mutants who's seen a lot of terrible things, who have to deal with hiding their fierce rage inside from their friends.

Logan even gets to meet his daughter from Mariko, who's a mutant with claws like her father. Despite the years apart(world apart, even), there's an instant father-daughter bond between them. But, of course, this being a Rick Remender book, he will quickly stomp on your emotions for drama purposes! Last page reveal is a mixture of "oh shiiii- 0_0" and "oh man :("

There's an intense confrontation between Betsy and Fantomex. As a master of illusions himself, he sees through her facade and gets a theory of his own; Psylocke doesn't love Angel, but the idea of loving Angel. The man she wants is long gone, but she tries to rationalize it anyway, lashing out at Fantomex physically and emotionally. She continues to hold out on the past, denying everything else around her, including the connection her and Fantomex feel towards each other.

Buuuut, in case you were wondering if this was just some big character drama issue(in an X-men book! Remember when that used to happen all the time?), there's also Samurai Sentinels, that last page reveal guy, and his crew of badasses which includes, but not limited too, Beta Red, Zombie Sentry, The Blob, Demonic Ock, and the Grimm Reaper(which is, of course, a demonic version of The Thing).

So, the relationships are set, the characters are in motion, and not everybody gonna survive. Remender has set up what looks to be a great X-men adventure, with intense character drama, unexpected twists, fun ideas, and lots of action. AND Jerome Opena is drawing the last five issues!

VERY GOOD issue, now that I think about it. I'm looking forward to seeing all these dominoes being set up tumble over.

Amazing Spider-man #666: Despite the title, no Mephisto involved! But as far as opening issues to big events go, this is about as good as it gets. Spider-Island affects a LOT of people in Spider-Man's huge supporting cast(alongside everyone else in Manhattan Island!), and Slott masterfully sets up these characters and their relationships and situations. It's 30 pages, but not a single one goes to waste, packed with humor, action, and genuine intrigue. There's a few very interesting teases and questions Slott(and now Wacker!) have given us, like Madame's Web riddles about Spider-Man having to kill someone to save the day, the clone business, and the mysterious woman helping The Jackal.

All drawn by the wonderfully talented Stefano Caselli. He nails all the exaggerated facial expressions and emotions any good Spider-man comic needs with its colorful characters and superheroic soap opera narrative. His action scenes are fluid, with a real sense of energy and motion to them. I hope he gets to do more then just prologue/epilogues; hell, give Ramos a rest and put him on that big Sinister Six story coming up!

The best thing I can say about this issue is just how totally accessible it is. Its built up on over a year's worth of comics with their various sub-plots and back-up stories, but you can give this issue to a person who only has the vaguest concept of Spider-Man, and they'd be able to follow it.

EXCELLENT work, Spidey-creators.

X-Men Schism #2: This s*** though? No bueno.

Almost the entire issue I was like "wait wat". All the contrived bullcrap with Logan, the kids trying way too hard to be creepy and "badass", Cyclops reaction about keeping Quire on the island and hiding him from Steve Rogers(yeah, that won't backfire on you) so he can be judged by his peers(ya know, the peers that all hate him), all the wacky Frank Cho faces...it all just felt very bizarre and silly, and not X-men like at all. Meh. I mean, EH.

Secret Avengers #15 I remember the original concept for Secret Avengers, a mix of action and intrigue, with moody visuals to provide the atmosphere. Well, that has all went to s*** recently, and this issue is just the cheery on the giant s*** pile that is this series.

Right from the start I knew this issue wasn't gonna have anything resembling an interesting plot. First three pages of this $3.99, 22-page comic are wordless pictures of Black Widow standing on a building, then swinging through a building window in broad daylight for a splash page of her standing there with a gun. SECRET AVENGERS, indeed. What transpires after that is page of page of tedium talking heads, trite commentary on the nature of death in superhero comics, and preachy author sockpuppets complaining about the world and its cynicalness. And I hope you like starring at Black Widow's stupidly large breasts the whole issue, because its on full f***ing display on every panel, even the flashbacks where they WEREN'T unzipped in the actual event.

There is, quite literally, nothing good about this issue. There is no entertainment value. There is no action, no intrigue, and definitely no moody visuals. Just contrived conversations and speeches from nowhere, and Spencer's poor grasps on phrases like "I could care less"(twice, even!). CRAP of the highest magnitude.

Captain America and Bucky #620: Last time around I was harsh on Brubaker for his formulaic storytelling and lazy usage of WW2 flashbacks, and this issue just re-enforced that. You CAN tell a compelling story with the umpteenth flashback with the right ideas and artists. Captain America and Bucky is an examination of Bucky Barnes' pre-Cap America sidekick days. It delves into the psyche of a boy who had to grow up around violence and death, who had to bottle up his emotions even after all his family was taken away from him. He learned at a young age had life can be unfair, and how you have to preserve anyway. He also can kick the ass of men twice his age, so that always helps!

It helps that he has some real inspiration in Captain America. The first time he sees him is the first time the reader sees Steve Rogers as well, on a big movie reel, charging into banner in full uniform. You can really see just how special Captain America was in the midst of all this chaos; a true red-white-and-blue icon for the Greatest Generation. Bucky's uses that inspiration of his hero and all the sorrow in his life, and he channels it into success in the army. We know the story beats coming, with Steve Rogers taking him on as a partner, but its a satisfying read to see him grow into the role over time, and what he had to go through to attain it.

This is all drawn by Chris Samnee, who is like some magical combination of Dawyrn Cooke and Matt Wagner. His storytelling is excellent, capturing the 1930s era with the right mix of sophistication and comic book exaggeration. The man can draw anything, and a great pick up by Brubaker for his Bucky story.

Bucky IS talking to somebody in this issue...so he can't be dead, right? Either way, its a GOOD start to what should be an entertaining trip down memory lane.

Deadpool MAX #10: After an issue off, Kyle Baker is back helping David Lapham bring the monthly dose of cartoony insanity I've been craving. This book is just so wild, completely unpredictable in what it's about to do next; only fitting considering the title character. Bob's got a plan to get Deadpool back in his service and back on the goverment payroll, which maaaaaay or may not include being whipped to s*** by Lady Taskmaster in a wild sex scene, or creating a new Hydra organization consisting of a bunch of dumb rednecks. Meanwhile, Deadpool gets set up to assassinate an target who isn't really a good guy but an evil "supreme pedophile of children" but in fact isn't really that at all! That side of the story abuptly ends once Deadpool catches a glimpse of Hydra, but its entertaining to watch Wade Wilson drive his new handler up the wall and spray him in the eyes when he's slightly annoyed.

That's what this book is, through and through: entertaining. Wacky, insane, f***ed-up spectacle, where Hydra hostage takers respond by throwing feces at cop cars. GOOD

Detective Comics #880:I thought this was just a strangely OK issue of the book. Having two characters with the same name was actually kinda confusing, although the build-up and then reveal of Barbara Sr. condition was good. Synder continues to play up the ideas in his other book, about Gotham itself being evil, which makes me want to go pick that up and see what's going on with it. The Joker ended up being...kinda unimportant to the plot, didn't he? It's all some big goofy doomsday plan James Jr has come up with; The Joker is just there to seem creepy and required Batman-Joker fight scene we need once a year. The last page's reveal confrontation is kinda meh; I know that not only is Barbara gonna be alive and well by the end of the issue, but she's gonna be walking around fighting crime in about a month. There's no tension or "oh s*** son" feel to the last page, since we see him coming up the elevator already. Or...was that him coming up the elevator? The pacing is all over the place in this issue, a very jarring read.

So far, weakest of the three story arcs, but hopefully Snyder/Jock can provide a strong conclusion.

Here's the deal with Guy Gardner, something I came to realize after the first few issues of EW.

Guy Gardner is one of the best Green Lanterns, but he's never been able to hold down a series. Why? Because he's a terrible star.

He's a supporting character. A nutter. The best part of his character is that we don't know what he's going to do next. When you put him in a leading role, we start to see what he's thinking, he starts being the one to call the shots that's not the Guy Gardner we need.

This:

external image
external image

is wrong. Expressing his feelings. Being a super cop.

THIS is Guy Gardner:

external image
external image
external image
external image
external image

He's a jackass. A creep. And hilarious. His best days were in the JLI, and I know they're trying to take him in a more serious direction, but I don't think that's Guy.

He groped Mary Marvel's ass in front of the whole JLI for god's sake!

external image

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, there's a reason this is the most popular Guy Gardner scene in history:

Yikes. While I do firmly believe that the reason there aren't many female creators at DC is just the lack of interest from talented women to work there, Dan DiDio himself is just a jackass, and can never convey something properly. Even when he's right, he's still wrong.

I'm kind of wondering what happened to that Cowgirl girl Hal Jordan was dating. It wasn't really a very good romance, but it was still there, and now Hal Jordan is supposed to be SO ALONE NO RING NO FRIENDS NO FAMILY (even though they're all in Coast City too). Maybe it's just Johns being melodramatic.

Speaking of which, I really liked the letter in the back of GLC about a fan wanting to see more of Hal Jordan as a human and saying he should take off his ring once in a while.

Indigo being there is raising continuity bull**** alarms like you would not even BELIEVE.

The issue is pretty decent but Indigo's death was a really big deal in Outsiders and she's never come back or anything like that and her just showing up, teaming up with Prime at that, is really ****ing ridiculous.

Though I guess the ending implies some kind of TIME TRAVEL being involved so...whatever.

A while ago. I think he's considered one of the best Spidey writers? Don't quote me on that, but I really like him. He gets the quipping down pretty perfectly.

I also just read Teen Titans, I didn't know about Indigo dying, I don't even know who she is, but I doubt they really care about continuity at this point!

I may start reading that. I just remember Gail Simone tweeting about everyone hating Dan Slott when he started writing.

I've liked Spider-Man as of late. Cut out One Moment in Time and it's hard a pretty good run recently.

I still like him with Mary Jane, though. Carlie is alright but she doesn't seem to have much personality other than BADASS NERD WHO DOES COOL THINGS LOOK HOW COOL SHE IS LOOK HOW NERDY SHE IS

you know pete won't ever get close to her like he has with MJ so why bother

You know he won't get close with anyone else. The fans know that he belongs with MJ, the Marvel staff knows it, and by god, Quesadilla knows it, but damned if he won't ever admit it.

Regardless, ASM has been pretty good for a while now. OMD will forever be unforgivable, even more so now with OMIT fanning the flames. Ignore those though, because you're just depriving yourself at this point if you continue to not read Spidey.

#2 was pretty bleh but I'm too big a Traci 13 fan to ignore World of Flashpoint.

And I may be the only person enjoying Secret Seven.
