Fun game. The GBA translation is excellent.

And hair color is one thing, but General Leo being black and white is still probably the weirdest FF sprite/artwork discrepancy.

SQUARE-ENIX PRESENTS

Fire
Water
Wind
Earth

The peace and prosperity of the world is thanks to these crystals

However...that power is nearing its limit.

Not far off is the day when the wind slows...the water stills...

And the earth trembles and quakes...

And yet,
everyone remains blissfully unaware
and the grave secret hidden in the crystals remains untold...

Okay so my party according to the video consists of some guy, a chocobo, a pirate, a princess, a large dragon, and a meteor.

This game sounds promising.

EDIT: SPOILERS AHOY!

Large meteorite. Obviously connected to the wind stopping. Our Lenna is such a smart little girl :)

Also: Galuf: "Plus, I know I've gotta get to that shrine...I feel it in my bones. You've gotta take me with!” Hell yeah hipster old man.

Boko The Chocobo <333-- LOL. I’ve seen forcefields and magic barriers preventing characters from going backwards or leaving an arena, but never before has the ground literally disappeared to let me not go back. And aww, no fighting with Boko as a teammate :(

Oh of course “The shockwave from the meteorite’s impact caused landslides...”, Apparently the big gaping hole in the ground was ‘rubble’ okay.

Also the cave to the north seriously came from no where. The first time I rode Boko up, it was just a rocky enclosure. Now there’s an offset grassy knoll and a cave. But it’s chill because our hero Bartz blames nature shifting on the earthquakes which derive from the meteorites. Earthquakes must have something to do with the wind stopping as well. Bartz is our team’s scientist.

Oh s- devil crab x2 battle here we go

Slash Slash Slash VICTORY!

40 gil and 4 EXP. If it’s around a million EXP to hit level 100, then I only need to fight another half a million devil crabs here to be the very best.

After receiving 40 more gil and 4 more EXP I decided to press on. I found a recovery spring to heal me from my near-death encounters with the devil crabs, and in the next room I’m fighting Steel Bats and Stropers. Steel bats are pretty self explanatory, but the only way I can describe Stropers is....uh. Well it’s like the hunchback of Notre Dame mated with an ugly plant and this is the outcome. It’s pretty ugh.

I watch a pirate give me a demonstration on how to open doors, and Thomas Edibartz takes credit for the discovery that we weren’t really researching. I open a chest and obtain a leather cap. I am pleased. Three more steel bats later and I’m through the door. Captain Bartz notices a ship through an opening in the wall and ponders the question of how it sails without wind. I proceed to walk through the hole and the location of the hole doesn’t allow a view of the open sea at all as its surrounded by mountains

external image

Conclusion: Bartz is a psychic and a scientist.

The next room is filled with signs of pirate’s home decorating extreme. Galuf suggests we steal a ship from the honest hardworking people. Lenna and Captain Bartz agree. Unfortunatly this doesn’t work as pirates are inclined to notice the one thing they legitimately own start to go missing. Faris gets pissed and Lenna reveals she’s a princess. Bartz has the next awesome line

“Hey! Leave her alone, you degenerate, lecherous, piratey...pirate!”

Faris tosses them to the brig but by the use of a clever plot advancement she unties them and they set off for the wind shrine. Lenna asks how the ship moves without wind, and Faris tells her it runs on the blood of dead children I mean this underwater dragon named Syldra.

Shall you steer the ship instead of me? Absolutely not, I want to drive it.

I’m enjoying this game and the translation so far, the start isn’t dragging on at all like some FF games (coughFF7cough)

Sailed up to Tule and the pirates went to go have a glass of milk and some cookies to steer off sea sickness. Talked to a man that took me to the tutorial room. Learned about jobs. Sounds pretty awesome.

Spoilers Faris is a girl even though I originally though she was and don’t know why I changed my mind on that. Downstairs some strippers danced on Bartz (and by extension on Lenna and Galuf.) Bought some magickz and found a tent a potion outs-

“The beast in the canal only seems to target women!” I love this game.

We enter Zok’s house for him to not be home. The concept of appointments doesn’t exist in the world of FFV (or at least to Lenna.) So I left Tule and went to the Wind Shrine. Pretty awesome music in here. There’s a room with people running around that tell us there are monsters in the shrine and we’re the only ones who can go find out if the king is alive. So much for swearing fealty to him you peons.

Fought some black goblins, a white serpent, and got a tent on the 2nd floor. GAME SAVED. Got a broadsword on the 3rd floor and BOSS FIGHT

One asskicking later, we are imbued with COURAGE, DEVOTION, HOPE, and PASSION and King Tycoon dies. How tragic.

In contrast, I now have six very awesome classes to choose from. Knight, Monk, Thief, Blue Mage, White Mage, and Black Mage.

I’m really enjoying this game so far, it takes all the good aspects of FF1 and puts them into overdrive. I think I’m done for the night though.

Sailed back to Tule, Faris went back to the Inn. Went to Zoc's house and he's now (unsuprisingly) home. Lenna tells him we need to go to Walse and he have to pass through the canal (the one that apparently attacks women). It's too bad because Zok has apparently lost the key to the canal. It's a good thing the government trusts large scale transportation site safety to an old man. We stay the night.

Eerie music in the night, and Bartz gets up and walks outside. Flashback tells us that Bartz's father has something to do with the protection of the crystals. Back inside, we see Zok preparing to molest Lenna in her sleep while she mumbles about her father. He thinks better of it, and reenters the main room. He approaches Bartz, and tells him that he hid the key for Lenna's safety, but he now gives it to us. Woo hoo!

I still haven't decided what jobs to give my characters yet. Is there anything extremely helpful I should know?

There are a lot of spells Blue Mages can only learn in one area or from one boss, so keeping a Blue Mage around a lot will rarely be a bad thing. As I recall, Samurai and Ninja have some amazing abilities, but I don't think you have those yet.

Some of the skills you learn from classes are just stat-boosting things or other passive effects, so they all have some usefulness.

If nothing else, Barehanded is worth learning for everyone. Some abilities (like Barehanded) raise one of the stats of the equipped character, but don't actually mention that they do. In Barehanded's case, it raises the character's Strength to be the same as a Monk, which is tied for highest strength of any class.

What? FFV Blue Magic is one of the best ones to put time and effort to getting the spells. IF you know which spells you can learn and how to make the enemies cast it, that is. Otherwise... yeah.

Hints... Doublehand from Knight is nice early on, though I think it only works with Knightswords. Early Barehanded is godly too. Out of the early jobs, mastering Monk will give that character the highest Strength and Stamina boost.

Also, you may have noticed this, but you don't actually gain stat boosts when you level up. The only things that levels up is your HP, MP, and level itself.

I left town and Faris tells the pirates they have to stay behind and guard the fort. They reluctantly agree. Too bad for them we take the ship with us, so they're gonna be left with a pretty huge tab on grog and no money to pay it with.

I decided on Monk/WM/Blue Mage/Black Mage for Bartz/Lenna/Gulaf/Faris respectively. We got on the ship and have an emotional moment where the team agrees that they have to save the rest of the crystals. Faris also declares that we have to find King Tycoon. In response to reminding her that he died, she says that she can also "feel it in her bones." I'm checking a Blue Magic list to collect those along the way in case I decide to go with it. I went and got Vampire, Goblin Punch, and Aero (poor boko :( )

We sail to the Torna Canal, and Bartz opens it. I have to fight some 'suckers' which are like squids vomiting pink tendrils of evil and some octokraken which look pretty smug. Shortly in we encounter the "sealed monster." Faris tries to steer us away, but Syldra senses the monster. BOSS FIGHT against uh it looks like a lobster mated with a cockroach sort of.

At this point I hit the wrong key on the keyboard and loaded a state over that, so I had to repeat everything from the second trip to Tule to now again /rage

Zoc's house dream sequence keys jobs pirates speech blue magic boko whirlpool BOSSFIGHT

Thunder, Monk Attack, Cure, Aero VICTORY

Syldra died :( (also I'm not sure how that lobsteroach was the canal guardian)

That night, Gulaf asks how Faris is doing, Bartz say's he's doing good (okay what?). Sadly, we're unable to move now without the sea dragon, and we drift to the Ship Graveyard.

End because I got pissed I had to redo everything.

Here's a tip: Blue and Red Mages have higher physical stats and better weapons than all other mages. Galuf and Bartz are slightly better at physical stuff than Lenna, and Faris is more-or-less balanced.

Personally, I would make Galuf the monk, Bartz the Blue Mage, and make the girls the other mages, but the difference is neglible.

Also worth noting along this line: When you're a Freelancer (and I think Mime), passive skills like Barehanded are automatically given to you; you don't need to equip them. Thusly, once you have a fair amount of those, freelancer/mime become the strongest classes in the game. However you should avoid using them because you don't get points toward mastering any new skills.

I never had a problem picking four different classes for every character without thinking much.

The game isn't that hard that you can't come up with a strategy with whatever you got.

Edit: Eventually a "perfect character" will include mastering all jobs anyways. Which isn't as hard as it sounds.

Great game, third favourite mainline FF probably.

Most of the classes are pretty decent. You'll probably start figuring out what the power skills are later on but there's plenty of time for that. Avoid Berserker (-except- possibly for a quick Vitality mastery, but only do this against a few specific grind spots), otherwise all other classes are quite useful although Dragoon comes pretty close to lacking a point (it's not -bad-, though).

Freelancer/Mime are your ultimate destination classes no matter what. They'll have the stats of anything you master + all your learned passive abilities.

Have fun!

Wandered around fighting some Skeletons and such. The foggy layer inside the dead ships was pretty cool, reminded me of Super Metroid. Got the !White ability for Lenna, and !Black for Faris. Switched he/r to thief for now. Faris didn't want to go underwater. After emerging, s/he doesn't want to get dry. A touch of molestation later and we discover Faris is a chick. Galuf gets the lines of the day

"I knew you were too pretty to be a man! *whew*"

and in the morning:

"Bah... If you aren't gonna dress like a girl -and you should, a real shame to hide such assets- y'could at least talk like one..."

A couple ships over I get the WORLD MAP! Exit move on. One more ship and opening a chest triggers the whole wrecked ship its on to rise up. Bet the people on the titanic which they'd known that.

We hit land and Captain Bartz says that "something's fishy, and it ain't cod." Sparkly light, and his mom appears(?). Bartz becomes mesmerized, then King Tycoon appears, which takes ahold of Lenna and Faris. A little girl calls Galuf grandpa, but he can't remember. suddenly, everyone catches on fire except Galuf, and a tall woman appears. Siren says she will spare Galuf's life if he leaves quickly, but he refused, and *****slaps the hell out of everyone to wake them up, and the game tells us that everyone was in a different state. Bartz "snaps out of it", Lenna "comes to her senses", and Faris "leaves her trance" okay unneccessary but alright BOSSFIGHTZ.

Siren was pretty boring until she suddenly became one of the undead which was weird. But like every dead corpse, fire and curative magic makes it scream murder. Got a Bronze Shield and Find Passages!

Went to Carmen, some of the damned catchiest music ever. Swapped Bartz over to a knight after he learned barehanded. Headed up to North Mountain. Nice area, reminds me of the mountain in FFVI where you meet Sabin.

Near the end, Lenna sees her father's helmet. She runs to it and gets struck by a poisoned arrow from Magissa, who I guess is a bounty hunteress? Not too clear on that. The group rushes to save her and the earth mysteriously just drops again. Faris jumps it, falls, and climbs back up. She then tosses a rope and tethers it while Magissa stands idly by and waits. The group attacks BOSS FIGHT

Wasn't bad at first, until she summoned Forza. Finished her off, then he kicked my ass pretty hard. Ran out of Phoenix Downs, Lenna died, Galuf died, managed to just barely finish him off with Bartz and Faris. Time to level up apparently :/

We move on and see Hiryu, the dragon from the intro video. He's hurt, and Lenna walks into the grass which apparently poisons you (I avoided it by guy instict, looks like I was right)
