Wow, I honestly never knew that the Energizer Bunny started off as a parody, and I'm old enough that I should have known that.

I do actually know which brand of batteries are in my remote though, since I only buy Duracell. <_<

Essentially, when Earthbound was being released in NA, Nintendo did two things in particular to advertise it:

1. Have it come in a special big game box twice the size of a normal one.
2. Have ads saying "This game stinks!" with scratch-n-sniff things that would let you smell some of the weirder enemies in the game.

Both were pretty catastrophic. People just found the big box annoying, and remember that this was back when most gamers were pretty young. No one understand the intended "This game stinks!" irony, and just took it as "this game stinks." It was terrible all-around and EB ended up tanking in sales (there were some other factors involved in that, but those didn't help).

The fact that, as you point out, people really loved the Energizer Bunny ads and the Alka-Seltzer Spicy Meatball ads, but yet still were confused over what product they were actually advertising, really proves how stupid a lot of people are.

It would be one thing if people were just casually ignoring the commercials and then later couldn't tell you what they were about, but people obviously paid enough attention to grab catchphrases and such!

I recall reading an article saying that the old spice guy commercials are haven't actually improved sales, and have actually hurt sales as well!

I would have to say that there are too many pictures/captions. Especially when I just read the first part, I was thinking "Why is there a picture every six words I read?"

Also, the quality of some of the captions is a bit lacking. Some of them are really good, but I feel the article is bogged down by too many of them.

That said, I really enjoyed your writing, and I hope you get another article on the site in the near future!

I don't get what's wrong with the Folgers commercial. OK, you had a couple of housewives, but that wasn't a big deal back then. It's not like the guy flung the coffee into her face and called her a stupid **** for ruining his breakfast.
