There's nothing 'weak' about this gen, really. Just as good as last gen, unless you're a big JRPG / Nintendo fan.

This gen is probably the best gen we've had so far in terms of overall quality. It just has less Nintendo and JRPG games, which of course means B8 is dissatisfied with it.

Nintendo isn't that bad this gen. We've got 3D Mario platformers, 2D Mario platformers, KEY, DKCR, Zelda Skyward Sword coming up, and that's just avoiding anything controversial. As for JRPGs, we aren't getting tons of great ones but there are exceptions.

....How the hell did they manage to have a great Top 10 but everything else is SO BAD?

I have a feeling that they made a Top 10, then selected 90 other games and threw them into a randomizer.

There are some pretty undeserving games on there. They also snubbed the hell out of the Monster Hunter franchise (aka PSP seller+One of the best games on Wii), MGS4, Portal (But the 2nd one gets on when it doesn't really have the same charm that 1 did? WTF.), They include remakes of old games but no FFIV DS is also really surprising to me. Like parts of the list are fairly agreeable. But damn not good. They snubbed a lot of stuff and the order is pretty awful.

Couldn't agree more. The DS is much superior to the GBA (especially since NoA localized, like, none of the GBA's interesting titles), and I'd even take the Wii over the GameCube.

I agree with this, too. I haven't played Portal 2 in its entirety, but I've played it extensively... and though it's a very good game in its own right, Portal just felt a lot more exhilarating. I think Portal 2 is within the 8.5 range, whereas I'd give Portal 1 a perfect score.

Replace FPSs with RPGs, and you have last gen. SNES nothing but platformers, PS1 RPGs! There is always a popular genre at a particular point in time, but there are also many other games outside of those genres, although 'third-person action' game is about as broad as it gets.

disagree.

You never touched the PC during its prime did you?

Also, the PS2 has just about every genre on lockdown except maybe FPS. Hell the PS2 alone is better than the 360, Wii and PS3 combined.

The PS1 had great jrpgs, fighting, racing, and some adventure games. The N64 covered everything the PS1 didnt have extremely well.

Or IGN isn't a fan of RPGs.

Hm, good point. They probably would have had FFXII on there if they only counted like 2005 and later, since IGN absolutely loved it iirc.

The stupid thing is that you're right. Oh well, I still like it.

And yeah, top 10 (or even 20) is pretty good, everything afterwards sucks. Although Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which some regard to be the posterboy for Nintendo's fall this gen) being in the top 10 is sure to cause a firestorm elsewhere.

At least we can be glad that Call of Duty almost missed the top 20 and that there's no GTA or Halo in the top 10! Actually, breaking the top 10 down by publisher...

Take-Two: 3 (BioShock, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3)
Nintendo: 2 (Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl)
EA, Valve, Sony, Ubisoft, and Eidos then all have one each.

So no Activision Blizzard in the top 10! Take-Two is the master of this generation! Even better, the three of their games that got into the top 10 are either new IPs or franchise reboots. Who said this generation was a mess of sequelitis?

With the exception of JRPGs, this is also true of the PS3 / 360. The problem is you have different tastes. If you think MGS4 is the highlight if the gen I can understand how you'd feel that way. That would definitely be bad news if that was this best this gen could offer.

I'd be more interested in Shadow of the Colossus' placement if games for 6th gen consoles were allowed into this list; it's apparent that IGN loves that game, but do they love it more than they love Mass Effect 2?

MGS4 is pretty damn close to the best console game of the gen. The only ones id put ahead of it are Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, and maybe Arkham. I havent played Vesperia yet though and Ive only heard good things, so here goes nothing.

The problem is the amount of power the western culture has on gaming now. The "i have the attention span of a dog" group in particular.

19. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
18. Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
17. Left 4 Dead 2
16. Heavy Rain
15. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
14. Halo: Reach
13. Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

now this is a confusing stretch. Reach at 14? CoD4 a bit low. Oblivion at a decent spot but then you see Pac Man and friggin NSMB ahead of it.

I think A Crack in Time was only #21 on IGN's Top 25 PS3 games list. Although to be fair, Demon's Souls wasn't there at all, so whatever.

Not sure where Demon Hunter's complaint is coming from. It's not like there's any Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War, or Grand Theft Auto is in the top 10. Although Brawl being in the top 10 may be just as bad.

I forgot that God of War III had already shown up (and I think it was just barely in the top 50, no less), so I look like a total egg there. Aside from that, the only two games in the top 20 I did not predict correctly were Pac-Man and NSMB.

I wouldn't put MGS4 in a top 30 for this gen! There is so much better out there.

It's easy enough to avoid the "lowest common denominator" games, though. Western devs have made some amazing things these past few years, games every bit as good as the ones that have come from Japan over the past twenty years. I can understand not liking the FPS oversaturation, but it always happens, and there are always much better alternatives. First it was platformers, then RPGs, now FPS, and then we'll move onto something else eventually - or genres will converge further than they already have.

Heavy Rain's not a video game. It's an "interactive drama".

I thought about grabbing my pitchfork and joining in but then instead I began thinking about my own list...for about 3 minutes and 22 seconds, realized that's a really hard list to try and come up with and gave up.

Have you guys ever done a bracket that broke the games down into generations and done a top 100 of each gen? I could go all the way back to the NES days but it would still have to be a collaboration because it's near impossible for anyone person to have played enough games in a single console generation have an informed list.

The top of the list looks solid in my fairly uninformed opinion. I really gotta check out the mass effect games. As well as bioshock.

The problem is this is the previous gens still had more diversity on their consoles. Because everything is so big business now, games have to sell a ton to make profits. And because games have to sell a ton more than previous gens to be successful, you are seeing more clones of already successful games than ever. It took quite a while for developers to realize they should stop trying to make "the next world of warcraft" and start trying to do what wow actually did, revolutionize the genre.
