Replace FPSs with RPGs, and you have last gen. SNES nothing but platformers, PS1 RPGs! There is always a popular genre at a particular point in time, but there are also many other games outside of those genres, although 'third-person action' game is about as broad as it gets.

Also, the PS2 has just about every genre on lockdown except maybe FPS. Hell the PS2 alone is better than the 360, Wii and PS3 combined.
The PS1 had great jrpgs, fighting, racing, and some adventure games. The N64 covered everything the PS1 didnt have extremely well.
