It's easy enough to avoid the "lowest common denominator" games, though. Western devs have made some amazing things these past few years, games every bit as good as the ones that have come from Japan over the past twenty years. I can understand not liking the FPS oversaturation, but it always happens, and there are always much better alternatives. First it was platformers, then RPGs, now FPS, and then we'll move onto something else eventually - or genres will converge further than they already have.

The problem is this is the previous gens still had more diversity on their consoles. Because everything is so big business now, games have to sell a ton to make profits. And because games have to sell a ton more than previous gens to be successful, you are seeing more clones of already successful games than ever. It took quite a while for developers to realize they should stop trying to make "the next world of warcraft" and start trying to do what wow actually did, revolutionize the genre.
