So, looking over the NHL.com FA tracker, here's a few that caught my eye that haven't been discussed here yet:

Handzus goes from LA to San Jose, that's a tough one. He's not like a point-per-game superstar or anything, but a solid gritty player, and having him to to the big in-division rival is brutal.

Giguere goes from the Leafs to the Avs. Good news for Avs fans I assume? Obviously he's past his prime, but it's still an upgrade from Budaj right?

The Caps lose Marco Sturm to Vancouver. Another player who is solid when he's not injured.

Leino goes from Philly to Buffalo in the Flyers latest attempt to banish any and all skill from their lineup. He should help Buffalo a lot, I've always thought he's underrated.

Jeff Halpern goes from the Habs to the Caps, I guess that makes up for Sturm.

Andrew Brunette goes from Minnesota to Chicago =( That sucks, he was probably my SECOND favorite Wild player behind Burns, who is also gone.

Joel Ward goes from Nashville to Washington!!! That's cool. He seems like a great guy and if he can carry any of his playoff momentum through, that could be a big signing.

The Caps also got Roman Hamrlik from Montreal. Not so excited about that one, def past his prime.

Minnesota loses ANOTHER up and coming player, Cam Barker to Edmonton. They seem to be blowing it up too, although you can't really blame them...

Joel Ward is great. I've watched a lot of him since he went to UPEI and all, and he never gets lazy out there. Solid on the PK, great energy guy, and he has one of the best attitudes in hockey.

and now he can score goals, according to the playoffs!

Yeah, I think Richards is gonna be mediocre as a Ranger. That team has a way of making people suck. Also, I think finally THIS IS THE YEAR where the Isles get it together and make a step forward. Not necessarily "in the playoffs" forward but maybe like "still mathematically in contention in march" or something.

Oh I'm sure he'll get his numbers. I just don't think he'll make the team significantly better. His numbers will be fine, but I'd suspect Callahan, Dubinsky, etc. to go down.

i think the big thing that Sather was looking at was the PPG playoff stats.

All they need is like, one or two goals a game in the playoffs the way Lundqvist performs.

Leino is not worth 4.5 even a little. He got the easiest defensive assignments and had solid linemates. I would have been fine with him at even 3 mil for 4 years, but buffalo gave him 4.5 for 6. Lol that.

this. on paper, most of the players he has to work with aren't big names but he demands a lot out of them and makes them work as a team very well. A++ coach

I just really don't like the signing. It's a waste of money, and allows the team to, yet again, act like the whole problem was Goaltending when goaltending was like completely and totally NOT the problem at all.

Neuvirth and Holtby are both very skilled, young prospects who have shown a ton of promise. This is money that could have been MUCH better spent elsewhere.

Literally ANYTHING else. Vokoun isn't worth a million more than Holtby to this team. I'm honestly not sure I'd take him for free. It just totally sends the wrong message, to both the fans and the players.

I hope they trade or release Neuvirth. He deserves better than this.

It just totally sends the wrong message, to both the fans and the players.

"We traded away a young goaltender for much more than market value, and we're going to sign an established, hungry goaltender for very cheap to both give the goalie we believe in more chance to develop and our main roster a chance to win now" is totally the wrong message to send, I agree.

What move would you make that this $1 million will prevent the Caps from completing?

Well, I'm not very well into the whole FA thing. I'm not sure whose out there. But hell, if they get rid of Mike Green, that 1 mil becomes 6 mil. I assume you can sign a competent defenseman for that.

I was fine with trading Varlamov, because nobody needs three good goaltenders. Now.... they once again have three good goaltenders. If they're planning on dealing Holtby or Neuvirth that's fine I guess, but the whole thing is really unnecessary. Also, I don't think this increases their chance to "win now" at all. The playoff collapse was totally not on Neuvirth. They could have had Tim Thomas in net and they still would have lost that series.

I'm sorry, what exactly has Vokoun ever done to prove he's substantially better than Neuvirth? He's not a stud, he's "pretty good," and Neuvirth is also "pretty good." Only Vokoun is a lot older and more expensive (even if we got him at a discount).
