I feel like making a defenseman the face of your franchise isn't good marketing.

ITT: Muffin proves he knows absolutely nothing about hockey

The money I made on these playoffs disagrees with you =)

And ExTha, normally I'd agree, but there are certain exceptions and Weber is def. one of them. He's a total stud, and well worthy of "face of the franchise" honors.

Nashville made a killing selling Shea Weber beards in the playoffs last year. Their marketing division is fine.

the two goalies in the ECF this year were 41 years old and 37 years old. 35 is not that old when it comes to goalies.

and vokoun is awesome.

Leino is overrated, same as Richards. The weak free agent market made average to good players suddenly studs. Richards is a top line center, but not a franchise player

I actually didn't say Vokoun is not good. What I said was that he's not a significant improvement over Neuvirth. Which is true. To imply that goaltending was even remotely related to the Capitals playoff collapse is the height of ignorance.

Vokoun is better than Neuvirth at this point. This one-year deal provides Neuvirth with much-needed competition (Holtby will be in Hershey for at least this one more year) and provides the team with an awesome one-two punch in net. Neuvirth hasn't had an experienced goalie to look up to and learn from yet, and this is something that really helps the development of a young goalie. Having Kolzig as a goalie coach and Vokoun as a sort of mentor is going to work wonders for this kid.

If you can improve your team in the most important position for little money, why not? It beats having to rely on Dany Sabourin for ~25 games.

3. Perry - $5.325M
4. H Sedin - $6.1M
5. Stamkos - ??? (previous: $3.725M)
6. Iginla - $7M
7. Ovechkin - $9.538M
8. Selanne - ??? (previous: $4.5M)
9. Zetterberg - $6.083M

Hmmmm, I actually like that deal for Minnesota. I hate Heatley and all, but I can't help but feel like the Wild were INSANELY lucky to enjoy two years of Havlat where he was basically free of any major and devastating injuries. Heatley may be a bum, but at least he's not literally made of paper.

Thinking on it more, I think it might actually benefit San Jose too. They have enough depth that they can easily stand to take the risk/reward gamble that Havlat is, and when he's healthy, he's among the most skilled forwards in the game. People forget because they haven't seen it in a couple years because he has been literally the only skill player the Wild had, but still!

and Havlat's great, I've always been a big fan. I think he's taken some massive strides with his conditioning the last couple years. If he can stay healthy, which I think is entirely possible, this is a good trade that clears up $2.5M in the books.

Some big signings today

Carolina signed Kaberle to a 3-year, $12.75 million deal.
Phoenix signed Yandle to a 5-year, $26.25 million deal.
Winnipeg signed Ladd to a 5-year, $22 million deal.

Really? I didn't realize his numbers were that decent. For some reason my perception of him continues to be "grinder from Chicago's third line who rode a decent playoffs into making people think he's a guy you can build a team around"

They're gonna need a better goalie if they want to make it back into the playoffs, though.

c/p from my comment on a blog

it was a fun time and i was impressed by the turnout. well worth the drive.
Very seriously considering going tomorrow, but the gf is at Drexel for some orientation thing and my car has no AC.

I wasn’t as impressed with Couturier as you were. Maybe it was cause he spent most of the time on the other end of the ice but every time I noticed him he was making a mistake. Agreed on Placek and Akeson. I thought it was way cool Akeson gave two little kids pucks. It took him 10 seconds, but those kids will sure remember it. Sestito impressed me as well, but he was my favorite going into camp cause he seems like such a cool guy on twitter.
