This actually reminded me that we're supposed to be getting What If S2 around Christmas and I'm pretty sure we haven't gotten any trailers for it yet, though we got Echo's that's 1+ month later?

Though they probably need to build more hype for Echo because man, that trailer made me even less interested in it than I already was... (will probably still watch since it's a binge + has Kingpin and Daredevil appearances I guess)

Thats surprising because I thought the trailer looked terrific and got me interested. Marvel seems like its one on one off at the moment so this should be good!

The Marvels up to 57% on RT - should at least finish well clear of Quantumania and could even scrape fresh eventually. Reviews are pretty mixed. The choice of embargo probably did more harm than good honestly.

Literally forgot The Marvels was coming out now, and someone reminded me twice last week.

I had zero hype for Echo, but the trailer took me by surprise and now I'm looking forward to it.

well I will say I wasn't expecting it to be TV-MA so when there was that shot of the guy casually shooting the other guy in the head I was like, alright now we're talking.

I am probably being too harsh, I mean I am looking forward to the fight scenes and Kingpin/Daredevil stuff like I said, my concern is how much is going to be focused on like, Echo's life or backstory - a lot based on what we saw in the trailer - and since she's still a character I don't care about I'm not particularly looking forward to that stuff!

Like the tagline on IMDB, "Maya Lopez must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward"...eh...

To be fair, I feel you could reduce most shows to descriptions like that. Modern TV synopses are as vague as possible quite deliberately. With that said I think I agree that the character did not leap out at me in Hawkeye, she was fine but didnt seem like she could support a show. The trailer at least convinced me that theres a vision behind it.

I'm mildly interested in Echo, but really, I think I'm just always open for more D'onofrio. I predict it will be pretty boring when he's not on-screen.

I mean, I'll be shocked if Kingpin is in this for more than two episodes.

I mean for me every show is just hey something to watch again, cool

not sure which I'd consider myself hyped for, Hawkeye was never a big interest for me but it ended up my favourite show

I think Kingpin will have a big role. Daredevil will probably only be in one episode though.

realizing: the show I was most excited for was Ms. Marvel. and sure I love Iman Vellani & the first two eps, but oh boy did it fumble.

I think the biggest issue for me has been the lack of continuation of these shows, which we're finally addressing with Loki s2 now (enjoying much more than s1), and Echo actually plays off of Hawkeye as well so I'm happy for that. I suppose the same goes with Agatha which I think is next after Echo?

I'm excited for Kamala's movie debut this week at least but god I really wanna know when I'm seeing Kate Bishop again

Just caught a late showing of The Marvels

So it was... good. Like upper mid-tier Marvel? Possibly better than Captain Marvel, I'd say. It's probably the least hyped I've ever been for a Marvel movie. I think I got brought down by all the toxicity that was surrounding it, but it was a lot of fun. It's like Joe MCU: good comedy, some good action sequences, feeds into some cool future stuff, good surprise cameos, light, entertaining movie. I knew going in this was never going to be like, Infinity War or NWH or even, Winter Soldier.

Spoilery stuff:

Obviously there are some flaws. Villain was one-dimensional but then I never felt like she was bringing down the movie. A bit like in Guardians 1, the villain didn't need to be anything more than that because it was more about the chemistry between the main cast.

There's a quite short scene in a field where they hash out their problems with each other and it doesn't really feel earned because of the briskness of the movie not allowing any previous emotional stuff to breathe.

The musical sequence might not be to everyone's taste but I have to say I found it pretty funny. Felt like a bit of Guardians-esque humour.

Action probably peaked with the first sequence where they're switching. Really good, impressive choreography in the sense that it's really chaotic but I still understood what was happening.

Iman Vellani absolutely steals every scene she's in. She's got amazing comic timing and line delivery. It'd be very easy for her to get annoying, but she's winning and very likeable instead. There's a couple of lines that don't hit, but really very few.

Post-credits scene rules apart from bad CGI on Beast.

There were a couple of plot points that weren't very well developed or explained because it was moving so fast. Like all the stuff on the SABER base while the Marvels were on the musical planet etc. I got what was happening, it was more like it didn't quite explain why it was happening

So yeah I'm happy, and it doesn't deserve to be what looks like an inevitable flop and the lack of support it seems to be receiving marketing-wise. In terms of Phase 4 and 5, I'd put NWH, GotG3 and Wakanda Forever over it - those go without saying - and idk, maybe MoM too. But I really, really liked MoM.

I was going to reply to her post with "Hailee Steinfeld's probably wondering too!!" and then decided to look her up on IMDB before making any flippant statements and (a) forgot all about her voicing Gwen Stacy in the the spiderverse movies and (b) saw her with a credit listed for The Marvels so eradicated my post entirely (partially resurrected since you posted that so thank you, lol!)

damn I had a bet that this movie would have 58% on RT the day the embargo lifted, I need a couple more good reviews. come on critics don't let me down

what's on the calendar for 2024 anyways...

movies: Deadpool, Cap 4, Thunderbolts
shows: Echo, Harkness, probably still Ironheart?

for movies Deadpool is an obvious exciting one, and Cap 4 I'm personally very interested, in part to see Sam taking the role to the movies, and on the other part excited for the backdoor Huk plot. Thunderbolts I'm completely sour on, as the successor to Black Widow my least favourite MCUvie (only competitor being Quantumania)

Shows I'd say it's not very exciting - Echo was far from a spotlight in Hawkeye, and while Agatha was a hit, I don't think anyone was expecting her story to continue. Ironheart I'm interested in, though mostly because I was always interested in an Iron Man successor but BP2 didn't really do anything sell the character yet, similar to Echo from Hawkeye

but uh this year for shows, 50% of what we got was Secret Invasion

If I were given the keys to the MCU I'd definitely pull the plug on Agatha and Ironheart.

Those shows made sense when we were operating under the idea of having 5-6 shows a year, with half of them starring established characters. It doesn't work when we're down to 2-3 shows, and they're all the spin-off characters.

I'm honestly surprised Sony hasn't even announced the next Spider-Man yet. They were doing a great job of spitting them out every two years, even with a pandemic, so I certainly expected them to have another one almost ready to go by now.

This movie 100% got hit by actors not being able to do promotion and the timing almost does not seem coincidental haha. The studios are full of people who dont know what theyre doing. Glad SAG-AFTRA got what sounds like a big win.

Speaking of studios not knowing what theyre doing, The Marvels is now (just) fresh on RT at 60% positive. Tracking seems to have improved somewhat now that reactions are out. With the way they hid the film from the public eye they made it seem like they had a gigantic turkey on their hands and instead the film seems actually fine? After alls said and done this is going to be seen as a master class on how not to market a film.

The good news is, I can see it opening night without having to worry about a bad audience because my local cinema is so empty! I am actually quite look forward to it, looks fun.

Oh geez, Saturday matinees are still totally empty in the theater I'd be going to. But also damn, now I'm mad about the price of matinee tickets... and $4.70 service fee?

Honestly, kind of same and that's 100% because of Aubrey Plaza. But she seems kind of wasted in an Agatha show.

I'd say Deadpool, but from what I'm hearing everything about it being mixed with the MCU is kinda stinky.

I don't know if there's anyone who could care about Ironheart. She was fine but pretty unremarkable in Wakanda Forever, but I don't think there's a person alive that's a fan of the comics character. She had an awful comics debut and I don't know she's ever really had an opportunity to catch on or not.

that finale is quite possibly my favourite piece of MCU content

never had that though from any other finale but wow that stunned me

That Loki finale was... Good? Idk I'm not like losing my mind over it or anything but it was fun. Definitely won't be a season 3 lol.

I popped for Yggdrasil

Honestly I was worried for s2 when episode 2 hit, that was a big snore for me where nothing really happened (refresher: that was the Brad episode). I've mentioned this a number of times before but Loki s1 for me was a lot of good highs with a lot of bad lows, so after ep2 hit I was worried the fun debut was just leading into another rollercoaster

but the rest were all pretty entertaining and like I just said this finale was just a huge hit for me that no other show finale comes close to touching (tbf d+ shows have largely failed to stick the landing)

Loki going full god mode with the massive horns was just absolute peak comics translated into live action for me, fucking loved it. I don't think I really considered Loki a fav character of mine but after this he's definite in that group now.
