"I paid $87 for gas today. But you know what I didnt do today?

I didnt flee from my home that is being invaded.
I didnt grab my dogs and hurriedly pack a bag, leaving everything else behind.
I didnt spend the night in a bomb shelter.
I didnt lose every member of my family.
I didnt place my trust in a stranger to keep me alive.
I didnt say goodbye to the life I know and enter into a world of unpredictability.
I didnt sleep in a Red Cross tent.
I didnt call loved ones to say goodbye.

Ill pay the $87 every time, because comparatively, its such a small price to pay."

It's basically the "eat all your food because there are starving kids in Africa" line, which is pretty much devoid of logical merit. Your problems don't stop being problems just because somebody else has worse ones. In particular, the current high gas prices are entirely a product of unjustifiable corporate greed. Accepting them as inevitable instead of holding those corporations accountable is exactly what they're banking on.

Yea, no matter how bad you have it, someone is bound to have it worse. Doesn't mean "just shut up and take it" is a valid response though.

Presumably it's a reminder that we're enduring these prices in order to sanction Russia and that Ukranians still have it far worse. In that respect, I admire it.

However, the reality is we're experiencing "fake-flation" spurred mostly by corporate greed and decades of competition-killing mergers allowing them to get away with it.
The price per gallon is not matching up w/ the price per barrel of oil and companies are intentionally avoiding drilling for more b/c they'd rather return inflated prices to shareholders.
So in the "the war is a false flag boogeyman to get people to blame instead of the real causes" sense, I don't like it b/c it perpetuates the myth that this is b/c of the war.

And don't forget that not a single Republican voted in favor of a bill that would stop oil companies from gouging customers.

I heard some gas stations in the area have run out

Gas stations in Southern Ontario have been running out of regular and selling premium at regular prices for months now; news never talks about it and the Gasbuddy apps go wonky for the stations that have run out of regular (the price of premium skyrockets on the app whenever a station runs out of regular)

This. It's the fallacy of relative privation.

...it's more the result of international policy and national priorities, such as blocking drilling and trying to stymie the system both to promote green energy and to create the perception fossil fuels are less viable than they are to further promote green energy.

This outcome is what green activists have been after all along -- a way to "prove" the current system has failed so we should all shift to green energy.

The Obama-Biden administration had been proactively hampering and hamstringing these industries, a practice Biden continued even after he took office -- even during this recent energy crisis -- and even as he blames the industry for things he had a hand in. Not that corporations don't also have a part in this, but government is the driving factor, largely because governments control all natural resources.

lolwut? The Biden administration has been blocking drilling as recently as within the past month or so. More importantly, new drilling is expensive and the disruption is, in theory, temporary (although, ironically enough, drilling more will support the USA and other countries' ability to sanction Russia which could end this faster, so the corporations would be shooting themselves in the foot).

But beyond that, the same people who cheered Obama and Biden for blocking drilling and making things as hard as possible for oil companies are now criticizing those companies for having a hard time due to those previous efforts. I'd call it hypocritical, but it's more two-faced -- this is just another contrived tactic in the war against fossil fuels.

Those companies are seeing record-breaking profits. In what universe are oil companies "having a hard time"?

No, in that post: "Russia going to war has not impacted gas prices to the extent oil companies want you to believe." Which, you know, is observably true. These gas prices are yielding record profits for oil companies. You don't get record profits if the only reason your prices are up is to compensate for supply issues. You get record profits by exploiting the good will of a customer base that's gullible/captive enough to accept price gouging under the pretense of it being necessary to compensate for supply issues.

No administration in the country's history has blocked *no* drilling. Every president has blocked some, and every president will continue to block some. Have you considered supporting your point by presenting statistics on the number of new drilling projects blocked/approved by the last few presidents so you can demonstrate that Biden is an outlier in that regard?

Why do so many people seem to assume that producing more oil domestically would make the US immune to the global oil market? If foreign oil prices are higher than the domestic ones, domestic producers will sell to foreign buyers. I'm not sure where this fantasy comes from that domestic production would satisfy domestic need first at a significantly lower price, but that's just not how global markets work. The only savings you would see would be those associated with transporting the oil, and even then I'd expect the corporations to pocket those savings instead of passing them on to consumers because there isn't enough domestic competition for that to put them at a disadvantage.
