Everything on this list has at bare minimum done something good for the industry or is completely harmless, even if it's completely worthless now (CoD). Kingdom Hearts is embarrassing now, but it's not like it's caused any problems outside of it's own series.

Doesn't apply retroactively? Well, that's almost the whole point of this exercise. A lot of these have already done their damage and seeped into culture and it wouldn't really matter if they never got changed again.

So it's what I think will do the most damage going into the future?

I guess it's Minecraft, then, just based on the availability of clones of everything else. Minecraft clones are also a major genre, too, but I don't think they catch on.

Hard to imagine how many good games don't come out if not for CoD blowing up. And how many FPS games would have come out with worse controls.

I don't think you can ignore a series laying groundwork even if it's own quality has plummeted.

Retroactive here means that people won't forget that these games existed and their influence can still be felt. But the current games and potential games in the future will be gone and no backup folders etc. can save them.

As for why I didn't make it apply retroactively is since it'll get pretty messy with things like 'if we didn't have FF then Square(-Enix) won't exist and that means the JRPG genre might have died or stayed in Japan' or 'if there never was CoD then we'd just have Medal of Honor being more prominent' or stuff like that.

I imagine the sudden disappearance of these series would be great for their most similar competitors, nevertheless. Dead or inactive series see their fans courted already, and that's without all their games wiped from existence.

as somebody who has a friend who is deep into fortnite, the amount it can rip from people for its cosmetics is intimidating

If we didn't have Elder Scrolls, then Horse Armor wouldn't exist, and then cosmetics microtransactions in console games wouldn't be a thing

That's not the game's fault. Microtransactions that don't give you an edge in gameplay in PvP, is harmless. Your friend is just stupid unless he is rich.

The point of this topic eludes me. Not retroactive means that the damage is already done, so whats the point? Except for some reason it is retroactive in respect to the existence of the games (just not their influence and knowledge of their former existence). Which seems to be purely spiteful to the fans of the respective series. So given the odd conditions set by this topic, I have to vote for Fortnite, because at least then no one will be deprived of a game they actually paid for.

I also don't know what "damage" Minecraft is doing here. It's...a very good game? Notch was a shitter and Microsoft is greedy with the IP but that's a monetization issue that every major game has. There is an argument that it helped spawn battle royale as a genre, but that only applies retroactively. Before battle royales blew up, everyone was trying to make shitty Destiny clones and I think the universe where those are monetized instead is a worse one.

And...hot take but battle royales are a fine genre? Fortnite is a fun game too! Again the problem here is monetization and the Metaverse aspect, which I think would be popping up elsewhere if Fortnite did not exist. And they already are - I'm surprised Roblox isn't on this list because it's the worst aspects of Minecraft crossed with the worst ones of Fortnite, with a more exploitative business model than either!

Hell even the reason I gave for CoD doesn't matter. If you wipe that away the government just funds a different military shooter.

Obviously the genre is mostly dead at this point, but even in its hayday it never really came up here.

Oh, Roblox isn't toys to life. It's like an amateur game development tool, plus a self-contained game store, plus an mmo-ish social network. Imagine an aggressively monetized LittleBigPlanet plus Second Life where most of the users are kids.

I didn't know about these but I'd classify them in the same boat as Amiibos or buying FF14 merch that gives you cosmetics. There's a lot of them but I don't think this is their primary business model? Some of these are even based off games users have made!
