Yes or no?

Well we role-play as Zelda in the games and have to save the Princess, so...

The only argument that it is would be that you play a role in the games, but several Castlevanias have roles that you play and shit and no one would call them RPGs.

I say no. An RPG needs to at least attempt to inspire role playing.

Yes. Everything is an RPG. Super Mario Bros. 3 was such a revolutionary RPG ya know because it has an item inventory.

Also that awesome RPG that Insomniac made. What was it called? Marvel's Spider-Man. You can level up. You get new powers. The game is practically turn based because you can pause to your menu after each attack you make and the enemy makes. You should really try that.

Actually you know what? We should just eliminate the term video game genre altogether. Everything is an RPG. Why even put the role-playing in RPG? No shit we are role playing? Let's just call it video game.

That isn't what paper was saying. In all the Tetris games that I have played, you control the Tetris pieces, but you don't play as one. You basically play as yourself or some disembodied non-entitity.

Yes. I was totally being serious here in our one millionth installment of Zelda is an RPG topic.

The biggest agreed-upon "constant" I've seen is the requirements of stats and XP. Basically, the playable characters have numerically denoted traits (Vitality, strength, stamina) that can be incrementally increased by defeating enemies or completing quests.

To that end, I'd say Zelda isn't an RPG series, though certain entries - namely Zelda II - clearly are, and others are close enough that they could be arguable.

I'd say that BotW is pretty damn close... to the extent that most people would consider it an RPG if Link's health and stamina were denoted with numerical Hit Points and Endurance Points instead of hearts and a stamina wheel.

But that's just saying "this game let you level up your character/s" without actually meaning what the type of the game is
Like, if I say "SOTN is a Metroidvania" it makes much more sense than to say "SOTN is a RPG"

You don't really get to customize Link at all to your liking, so it doesn't feel like a true WRPG in that regard. And there's no party, minimal plot, no EXP system or stats, and other JRPG trademarks.

So while it does have some RPG elements like pretty much any video game does, I would say it falls more under "adventure game."

I wouldn't even call that one an RPG. All it really has is EXP and basic stats. It's about as much an RPG as something like Kunio kun or Scott Pilgrim

We cover it at RPGFan.

We also cover it at RPGSite.

The argument will never end. That's fine. From a commercial perspective, it makes business sense for RPG-oriented press to crank stuff out. I used to say "yes, probably." I've changed my tune. Now it's just... sure, I'll take the paycheck?

Smashking! That's awesome. His articles helped me learn the ropes when I got started at RPGFan. He hopped over to RPG Site earlier this year. At the time, I didn't expect to do the same - and I still contribute to Fan via the "Coming This Week" column and some reviews. Yet most of my focus is on Site now, just like Nathan. Funny stuff.
