How does B8 like the announcement?

I look forward to every Smash character, but I'm particularly interested to see how they represent 3D fighters in his playstyle. Someone suggested that his A and B buttons might be punch and kick instead of normal and special.

If the hierarchy of Smash characters is supposed to be homages to Nintendo games, then fighting games, then gaming at large, then I think this is an important addition. But it also begs the question of where the Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Soul Calibur entrants are...

I heard Heihachi was not in because his Japanese voice actor passed away recently.

In any case, its a yes from me but Im not particularly excited. More than Pyra though.

No, Heihachi and probably Jin are more popular than him as are possibly Yoshimitsu, Nina Williams, King and a few others. Kazuya is however one of the three main characters of the series alongside Heihachi and Jin and was the poster boy of the first Tekken and has been featured in all the mainline games but Tekken 3. He was also the first Tekken character announced alongside Ryu in SFxT. Most likely that (combined with Heihachi's voice actor passing away in recent years) is the main reason for his inclusion.

I guess that is why I was unfamiliar, because tekken 3 is naturally the only one I've played more than 5 minutes of LOL, so I just assumed he had disappeared from the story at that point

I haven't really liked playing any of the fighter characters in Smash so far, and I feel nothing for Kazuya as a character. I'm not even sure if I've ever played Tekken lol

So I'm not hyped or anything but it's fine, I can't say he's objectively a bad choice or anything

He's easily my most hyped DLC character so far, hands down.

Also, I'm still kinda holding onto hope that they announce Jin Kazama as an echo fighter, given that their movesets would be extremely similar as Jin has all the same Devil Gene abilities

Heihachi threw Kazuya in a volcano in Tekken 2 which is why Kazuya was missing in Tekken 3 and presumed dead. He came back in Tekken 4 as the big deal returner (probably why he has his Tekken 4 suit as an alt costume.)

Do you have a source on this? I can't find any official popularity polls, but on the Tekken reddit, for instance, he's the second most used beneath Jin and was #1 in their own overall poll, and most sites that have compiled a "Best Tekken Character" list have him at the top or near it.

No. I don't have anything Kazuya himself, nor, in particular, Tekken. But I miss these games being a celebration of Nintendo.

He's the least excited I've been for a new Smash character reveal since Bayonetta in Smash 4.

But nothing wrong with dull characters getting in, because some people love them. Some of my favorites have probably been lame for others. That's the fun of a game having such a varied roster.

Pretty much exactly this. I'd honestly like less fighting game characters in general. But I would have at least preferred a Soul Calibur character over Tekken. Heck they could have gone with Yoshimitsu to represent both series.

Yeah but it's a fighting game so they'd be an auto turn around swordo with special input commands. I think that's actually more interesting than more punching boys (from FGs anyway, I want more punching people from RPGs).

I knew someone was going to say it and I hate you for it (but I will concede that a rhythmic fighter is something that is underdone in fighting games in general, and I hope Smash gets it one day beyond DK's old bongo claps)

I wouldn't rule out Kilik, he's the main protagonist is SC6 and he's pretty distinct from anyone currently in Smash

Kazuya (a.k.a. Tekken) is deserving of a spot but it's hard to deny he lacks a certain hype factor. As much as people complain about anime swords, characters that use anime swords tend to be way more interesting than punchy fighting game guys.

i think tekken has a minor edge over mk and strongly in japan and clear superiority over vf and sc (popularity-wise). i half expect to see a doa rep before the others too, and i'm not even talking just ryu (even if it'd likely be him anyway)

Kazuya may be more interesting when we see just how much of the Devil Gene he uses.

Also now that Tekken xSF is officially cancelled, can we just get a real fighting game crossover with all the major franchises? Take like 4-6 characters each from Tekken, SC, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Guilty Gear, KoF, BlazBlue and maybe even a couple from stuff like Skullgirls

the problem with crossing over with MK is that they'll want to be able to do Fatalities and most franchises don't want to subject their characters to being killed in brutal ways

This is true. Plus waifu fans.

Kazuya also suffers in the same way that Incineroar and Piranha Plant did, in that the nights leading up to the reveal, there were very widespread and commonly believed false spoilers that got people hyped (I'm not referring to the false spoilers that happen all the time throughout the year). So when they ended up being false, it made a lot of people dissatisfied by what was actually revealed.

In the case of Kazuya, though, he's like an even more exaggerated version of Terry, who got pretty neutral reactions on reveal, and then people stopped talking about him entirely about 2-3 weeks after his release in the game, which was far quicker than every other character for some reason (honestly no idea why). This is actually the first time people have even been talking about Terry with any weight, since about November 2019.

There were a couple leaks, in particular Vergeben who did accurately predict Incineroar. But it coincided with the Grinch Leak, and Incineroar was not in the Grinch leak. It was a very divisive time, and many people were really buying the Grinch one and it created a lot of ripple effects afterward.

This is my reaction as well.

Also yeah I am not too keen on the actual fighting game characters so far in how they play. But eh, whatever.

And it kinda deflates my hype for the final fighter DLC. Hopefully it'll be someone really hype.
