A 13-year-old schoolgirl confessed that she lied about a French teacher who was beheaded after showing his class cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, according to the girl's lawyer. Samuel Paty, a secondary school teacher in a town near Paris, was killed last October by a radical Chechen teenager after showing the cartoons to students during a civics class about free speech.

The unidentified girl told police that she lied about being in the class and falsely accused Paty of asking Muslim children to leave the class while he showed the pictures.

Her father, who has been charged in connection with the murder, posted several incendiary videos on Facebook based on his daughter's testimony which identified Paty.

"Everything in the investigation showed very early that she lied," the Paty family's lawyer Virginie Le Roy told RTL radio on Tuesday.

She said she was "skeptical" of the version of events recounted by the girl. On Monday, the girl's lawyer, Mbeko Tabula, told AFP, "She lied because she felt trapped in a spiral because her classmates had asked her to be a spokesperson."

Le Roy added, "A spokesperson of what? Of lies, of events that never happened? This explanation does not convince me and makes me rather angry because the facts are serious, they're tragic."

The killing of Paty shocked France and led to a fresh debate about freedom of speech, the integration of France's large Muslim population and the role of social media in whipping up hatred.
Paty was murdered in the town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine by the 18-year-old Muslim extremist from Russia who had seen the online campaign against the teacher mounted by the schoolgirl's father and another man, a known Islamist preacher.

Both of the individuals behind the Facebook videos have been charged with "complicity in murder" over their postings and are awaiting trial in jail, while the schoolgirl has been charged with slander.

The killer was shot dead by police.

A draft new security law being discussed in the French parliament would make it a jailable offense to publish information online about a public servant knowing that doing so could cause them harm.

I'm kinda confused by this.

The teacher showed depictions of mohammad which apparently is a pretty standard beheading.

Not sure how asking those sensitive to leave or not or lying about wether he asked those sensitive to leave or not would change those sensitive to that's views towards depicting that.

Unless it's that she lied about him dismissing those sensitive to the subject when the depictions never happened at all.

Another big part of it is that she wasnt even in that class when it happened on account of being suspended for something else that I cant remember.

But now, the girl has admitted that she was not in attendance during that class, and that she had made up the story to appease her father. She had actually been suspended for truancy the day before the class and wanted to divert his attention.

well, Islam is a couple hundred years younger than Christianity. And if I had to make a bet, Id say a couple hundred years making fun of Jesus probably would get you fucked up.

Edit: well, I guess none of these are specifically related to depictions of Jesus or anything, but I feel like the specific trigger for religious violence isn't really the point when it is present in both beliefs.

Yeah I read this all a day or two ago. The father that posted his 'angry rant' online initially keeps saying how he never wanted things to go this far. It's all pretty sad and disgusting, but I really hope people that are angry conservative Muslims who still don't wish death upon other people can learn from this.

She should be charged w/ complicity in murder, too. She's a minor so the punishment will probably still not be much, but it's ridiculous that she's still only charged w/ slander when she was the instigator of all of this.

Christians used to be equally or even more violent than these terrorists.
But they had this thing called The Enlightenment, where they eventually learned not to take the bible so damned seriously.
Islam needs that. I get it was formed like 600 years later so they're a bit behind on reformation, but even by that standard...it's about due by now.

Mind you, it never gets completely better. Still got abortion clinic bombers and such in the U.S. for example. But they're a very tiny fringe now, at least, and are swiftly dealt with.
