3-1 blew my fucking mind in a way no piece of mystery fiction has done since Umineko.

2-5 wasn't quite there but it was still legitimately brilliant as all hell.

I literally bought and played DR to begin with because somebody linked me to Hai Oh Daa, so that's probably why I'm a bit biased against the hyper pure 100% clean zero percent spoiler culture that surrounds DR where you can't even mention a character's name.

Acknowledging you like a chatcer shouldn't be a spoiler! One of the best characters in the series is only around for 1 case.

Did anyone not know the blackened in 1-3 and 1-4? Maybe it's because I watched the anime first (yeah yeah) but it was super obvious.

1-3 is just stupidly easy. Even actively not trying to figure it out I knew who it was, to the point where you almost want to assume it's not them purely for that reason.

You actually put the Hopes in there and didn't take the lazy way out and put them in the same tier.

They're distinct characters! Monaca should probably be B tier actually (easily the most effective villain in the series) and Jataro prob deserves F tier even if I feel bad for him.

3-1 was legit great, but it wasn't worth it. Shuichi by far the worst DR protagonist. Tempted to call it the 4-1 (AA) of DR, since you have a great case that leaves us with a bad game (other than 3-6 which is also great).

Shuichi is utterly boring. Replacing Kaede generates a lot of my antipathy towards him though.

Not that I particularly like any of the guys. Makoto and Hajime are low tier for their games too (think I might say all three protags are bottom 3 for their game? Might be close with Hajime).

Shuichi is a top ten character for the entire franchise for me. The growth of his character over the course of teh game is fascinating.

Yup. Say what you will about the core of his motive, but he was super entertaining, and you really have to respect a madman who threw away a relatively clean murder simply for his sense of aesthetics and the plan that he already had and was super fond of.

(Also DRV3 not actually going with the two separate killers route in Ch 3 was super wasted potential, moreso than anything else in the game imo)

Hajime is my personal favorite protagonist but Shuichi is probably the "best" just in terms of writing.

Shuichi is good as long as you can seperate him from Kaede, who is obviously the best one. Training Trio stuff is fun, and bouncing off of franchise #1 character Ouma helps plenty. Hajime is great, especially when he gets pissed. Makoto is an absolute nothing, I barely even consider him a character, specifically designed to be as boring as possible on purpose.

If we're counting Komaru then she's a blast. Also gay as fuck for Toko.

Eh, if you trust the prologue and take it at face value. Them actually being kidnapped would drop my opinion of the game a good bit. Them voluntarily participating is one of the best parts!

"True nature" is also wierd because even if you take Tsumugi at face value then the people they were before the game are essentially dead.

Also also I thought it was pretty clear that them being "kidnapped" was part of the bit after they all applied, thus them being hyped as hell that they had been chosen.

I don't have a problem with Shuichi
But if Kaede stayed the protagonist I assume I would have enjoyed the game more
She is top 5 character in the franchise...and considering how little screen time she has, this says a lot

Shuichi is easily the best protagonist in the series and I don't think it's close. Kaede may have had the potential to be better, but based on what we saw I'm not convinced. She came across as someone with no personality flaws whatsoever - which is great for someone you're supposed to immediately like who then hands the reins to someone else more interesting, but she would have gotten boring over the course of a whole game. Unless you're basing it solely on character design I'd say that 'objectively' she might actually be the worst one, although her role in one of the best cases in the entire series elevates her.

I would have enjoyed a future where V3 was basically the same setup, except Shuichi and Kaede were flipped. Shuichi was the standard protagonist you start as and who was in the marketing (very believable), and Kaede was instead the shocking protag. And she spends most of the rest of the game wearing his hat.
