Yeah but she didn't give the others a choice in the matter. She just decided it for everybody. She literally just took over and started doing whatever she wanted, and she purposely targeted the (seemingly) weakest people, mentally, to be her subjects.

I do want to be clear that I'm not calling Angie a GOOD PERSON. She was manipulative and controlling. I just don't think she's an actual villain.

I just really like her quite a bit when I think back on the game.

Also also, I've talking about this before but it bares repeating here, I'm a very biased person in regards to favoring female characters. If you've got two characters and one is a dude while the other is a girl, we're looking at anywhere from a +1 to a +4 out of ten in a 1 to 1 comparison between them. That's just me!

To be very specific, if Angie was a guy I would still be on the Angie hate train. This is a +4 situation.

Nothing Angie did is worse than what Byakuya did in 1-2. Hell, there are several MURDERERS in DR who have more of a moral high ground than Byakuya!

Well, yes, ATUA gets annoying (although a lot of her Atua predictions are surprisingly accurate). This is a general Danganronpa problem though. There are more characters with repetitive, obnoxious catchphrases than there are without them.

I was not really a fan of V3 girls besides Kaede
Kaede is obviously near perfect, and when she died I went to Kirumi, which turned out to be...kinda boring and disappointing
Maki was fine but it took her a lot of time to open up
Himiko was passable
Fuck Tenko and Angie
Miu is...unique, to say the least. She is her own thing. I feel like she is kind of a hit and miss and sadly I am on the miss train, but I can see why people would like her

Oh god and I forgot the mastermind and had to look up the characters to see I didn't forget anyone

I didnt like Tenko either. Most of the characters really are just repeated stupid gimmicks for the most part. I mean some of them have a great gimmick like Gundham, but most of them are just fucking terrible and never shut up about it until like 5 minutes before they get killed off.

I think that's putting it pretty generously. She also specifically tries to stop them from even trying to find a way to escape, again without actually caring how the others feel about it. She just decides for them "We're just gonna stay here forever and you don't have a choice because I er I mean Atua said so okay cool"

Pre-release I had hoped Kirumi would be on this list, but she just never reached her potential. Still love her design, though. Fun fact, she's one of very few if any primary DR characters who's eye color does not directly tie into their outfit.

Kirumi and Kaede are the only two V3 girls I liked. My biggest gripe with DR is that it seemingly really likes to cash in on that despair since by the final trial almost everyone left alive is bottom tier garbage.

Maki is the best female character in the series. She has plot relevance, a really great relationship between Shuichi and Kaito, no annoying personality quirks (THIS IS IMPORTANT), character development, a solid design + base characterization, and good voice acting. I'm surprised she gets so undervalued in discussions.

Angie did exactly what any cult leader does. She manipulated her followers, she dictated the way the world will be, and she expected everything around her to cater to her need. The fact that she had a large enough group following her meant that she was basically impossible to oppose, and so she issued edicts that limited everyone's freedoms...and considering her own followers were immune from them, that's just another tier in her attempt to force everyone to obey her.

Yes, Angie is absolutely evil.

Maki is great. I feel like she doesn't get discussed a lot because there no controversy there. Like, nobody raises a fuss about Kyouko, or Sonia, because nobody dislikes those characters.

It's the same at the bottom of the rankings. Nobody is raising a fuss when someone shits on Hifumi or Teruteru.

This is fair but it's honestly also in the bottom half of evil things characters in this series do. I guess it personally affects people more because dealing with cults is something pretty much everyone is familiar with these days thanks to politics, while few of us have a frame of reference for, say, incestuous murder by seesaw.

Wasn't huge on any of the DR1 survivors except Kyouko at the time. Aoi is fine, but not a fav. Byakuya I've made my stance clear on, he's my most hated fictional character, so it REALLY poisons the well. Then there Toko who I didn't care for in DR1 and only like because of UDG, so I don't count that as a win for her in a DR1 contained environment. Yasuhiro is nothing. Makoto is nothing.

DR2 had Sonia and Fuyuhiko, both A+ characters. Akane is incredibly boring though. Souda is...you know how sometimes you fondly remember a game you know is bad, but don't care that it's bad? Yeah, that Souda. Hajime also shines bright here as the best protag.

V3 is the odd one here. I'm all over the place on K1-B0, a very difficult character to rank. Maki is A+. Yumeno is also hard for me to rank, she's another character that goes through a lot through the game. The other noteable thing here is that Shuichi in the final case has way more presence than any other protag does prior, even Hajime, which is nuts considering a huge portion of DR2's ending is actually specifically devoted to him!

Makoto I like more than I should. He's the definition of a generic milquetoast protagonist but he's strangely endearing and his almost-execution was one of the few moments of genuine tension in the series. I was like DON'T HURT MY BABY BOY and from then on I was a real fan.

This grouping is super weird to me. It's mostly characters who died early and who I've often seen considered to be not very good among the fanbase. Rantaro being in the top half is bananas. In more sensible news, Aoi is in the top half and Genocide Jack places well above her lesser half.

I'm not like a mega fan or anything, so I'm not about to go to bat hard for Sonia when we've got other people here who rank her much higher and I think at least one person who has her as their #2.

Mikan's popularity in the DR fandom primarily falls into 2 categories: fanart and fanfic. Fanfic is its own thing and often times characters become a big focus in the community because the game didn't do them justice or underrepresented them (one of the best and most famous DR2 fics is an AU with Twogami as the lead after Teruteru successfully kills Nagito), fanart is focused a lot on design, and I think visually Mikan is a strong character design. I can't say I've seen Mikan actually being a fan favorite in game discussion, it's purely from the Ao3 and Pixiv numbers.

Ranking the entire cast together sounds like torture. Only thing Id be sure of is Junko dead last. Bottom 10-15 wouldnt be too tough I guess since it would mostly be dumb bears, Junko, Tsumugi, Byakuya, Kyouko and Toko

Now we're really at the big guns. Everything about this is way more sensible than the previous tiering. All these characters are ones that left a big impact on people and were important to the plot (except Ibuki lol). I wouldn't have been surprised to see any of these in the Top 10, but for the most part it makes more sense that they're one tier below.

7/10 of them end up dead though!

When you take it in combination with him saying he designed Chiaki to be his "perfect girl"...

Not to say Chiaki isn't one of the best characters in the franchise or anything, there's just some very stark contrasts between those two characters that paints quite the picture.

Three protagonists, two main villains, everyone's waifu, genderbent Sherlock Holmes, two dudes who brought their A-game to their punishment and then some, and Baby Gangster. A very solid Top 10 list.

Fuyuhiko and Gundham stand out as being pure fan favorites who really got this far on their own merits despite not being extremely plot-critical. Hajime being this high is kind of weird but I guess nobody actually dislikes him. Shuichi manages to beat out his predecessor. The lying goblin takes the overall #1 spot.

I love to see Gonta so high.

Gonta being Miu's killer was the one V3 thing I was spoiled on ahead of time, ut bit any of the context. Just the wiki statistic of "Miu (Killed by: Gonta)" . I spent the whole game up to that point suspicious as fuck of him and going out of my way not to care a out him, then when everything ACTUALLY went down and was out on the table it fucking FLOORED me, I was devesated, both at the events and with myself. As a result, there are few moments in time I can think of where I lather a character in the moment more than post 3-4 Kokichi.

Of course Kokichi ended up as my #1 when all was said and done, lol.

Also, I just thought of something. Where did Byakuya get that cup of tea he was drinking after 1-1? He couldn't have gotten it from the dining hall that morning because someone would have seen him, but him holding onto it only to drink it the next morning while reading is pretentious even by my standards.

Byakuya got full Sasuke'd. Just forgiven for his war crimes, no questions asked, popular for no reason.
