But this is kind of a dumb reason to perma-ban him from all Capcom events. Cancel culture is getting fucking absurd anymore.

Edit: I should clarify that banning him from events for x amount of time is more reasonable than a perma-forever-ban from every event. That's the absurd part.

Concerning a lack of consistency, I'm surprised that FChamp was the victim of this considering he's worked closely with Capcom in the past. I'm assuming it has more to do with him having the larger reach of anyone else who people are clamoring to be banned too.

Let me put it this way:

If FChamp has a history of shitting up the community with racism, then yeah, perma-ban him.

But if it's one awful, shitty joke, I don't think a perma-ban is the way to go.

Regardless, FChamp is an idiot and Capcom probably should have been keeping an eye on asshole players more, since I'm sure there's plenty that have said shitty stuff and probably should've done something about, but I don't think consistency is the main concern for Capcom with this. I still don't know how the FGC still has this idiocy going on though. You think they would have tried to clean up after Capcom has been pumping more money and attention into the scene.

I think it's an attempt to bring Capcom down with him somewhat for not taking a tough enough stance on offensive behaviour in the past. Which is true to an extent (remember Capcom's halfhearted reprimand of Aris for his racist and sexist comments on the SFxT Cross Assault promotion?), but there's many more people, companies and industries guilty of that than just Capcom. It's par for the course for someone like him to deflect blame away when his actions finally catch up to him though.

It's inconsistent with past behavior but if it's consistent going forward then it's worth it IMO. Terrible behavior should not be tolerated, and hopefully this sets the standard.

The fgc has been slowly dying for years and now suffers the "indignity" (I'm sure many of them feel this way) of relying on Smash as the only thing maintaining any relevance they have.

Good riddance to a shitty cesspool. Maybe the community can reinvent itself with fewer garbage quality people as its representatives.

The FGC is overall very progressive and diverse, but it's no secret that a lot of people--including big names--are not the greatest people. I think we're finally at a point where those people are going to have to reevaluate themselves or risk going the way of FChamp.

That said, I'm also a firm believer in taking in the full context of any given incident and am wary of "cancel culture" and knee jerk responses to anything that on its face is tasteless or offensive. I generally take issue with Twitter's overreaction to things, but in this case where FChamp literally took a picture, had time to process his joke and its implications, type it out, then post it--I think the ban is deserved. That's not even taking into account the rest of his shitty antics in the past.

Fair enough, I was probably too harsh and painted too broad a stroke with my initial comment. From what I recall when I followed it more closely, the FGC can be progressive and supportive, like when Ricky Ortiz transitioned to female a decade ago, but even then, a simple google shows that she suffered considerable harassment when doing so.

So yeah, there are good people in the FGC, but I'm not entering hot take territory when I claim that the ratio of assholes and maladjusted dipshits seems way too high.

Oh I've seen plenty of those examples; I was just saying that within the fgc, Smash itself has generally been seen as bush league by more traditional fighting game players. And now it's carrying the scene, which I can't imagine is a source of pride for those same people.

Cancel culture is exactly why words have been shunned away from society. N-word, f-word, r-word.

You wanna say them in private with friends that don't care fucking go for it. But if you have a platform, which he does, and reinforce shitty stereotypes then you deserve to be shunned. Make those jokes with people who might find it funny and not the masses, who don't find it funny and especially not in this current world.

I hope he has learned a little bit from this: don't be an idiot, and post normal stuff on a large platform. It never bodes well for you. If you're a A list celebrity people will forget, but this shit will follow FChamp for the rest of his career because he's an E lister.
