Never doing that again. Lent a friend $1000, and it took him a month longer than he originally promised to pay it back. I did get it all back, but that shit was stressful.

I don't recall the exact amount. But in college I had two very good friends that lied to me and used me for a lot of money that I at first thought was helping them for various reasons and would be paid back but eventually knew was because they were drug addicts and they were using me. At the time I was extremely vulnerable and had nobody else and I still helped them, which only further hurt us all in the long run. I would still always try my best to help my close friends but I learned that sometimes the way to help isn't always so straight forward. I never got any of it back, but I am cordial with one of them after we apologized to each other and explained our situations later on.

I don't regret any of it though. Mistakes are how we grow.

My nan got hit by a scam a couple of weeks ago and I lent her 100. I reckon that's the largest. She paid me back already.

Actually I lent my driving instructor in Qatar 500qar (which is just over 100) and he didn't pay me back until like 3/4 months after he said he would. That got to be a bit dicey but he did eventually pay me back.

Nowhere close to 1000. Don't think I'd do that unless they were obviously desperate.

Lent a good friend $500 to pay for rent after he lost his job a couple months prior and was having a hard time finding something that wasn't min wage. Came to find out he couldn't get a new job cause he started doing drugs, to which i assume that's where my money went to because he got evicted so after. Never got the money back but was fine with it since I've always lived by the motto of don't lend out money you expect to see back.

Lent an ex's family member $100 bucks for something, got it back a month later. Found out about a year afterwards that she was paying off one debtor, then borrowed from someone else to pay me back.

Lent my cousin $500 back in the day for a few textbooks for a college course he desperately needed. Found out later he spent it on a PS4 and it took weeks to get it back. I eventually went over to visit him and stole a few of his things to hold as random. It never got ugly and I knew he'd pay me back it all worked out but from that day forward I vowed to never lend money again.

I lent my mom $400 a few years ago, under the pretense that I didn't particularly care if I got it back or not, because she always wants to pay for shit I should be paying for myself over the years. It has WELL exceeded that $400.

Then a few months later, she comes back and goes "how much did I owe you again, $400, right?" and handed me back $500 because she claimed there was interest.

I love my mom.

Like 50 bucks, and even that was stressful getting her to pay that back.

At this point, if I ever give someone money, it's with the understanding that they don't have to repay me for it.

About a year ago, I got an advance on a credit card to buy one of my best friend's a vehicle for $2000, one which he could live in.

I put it in his name because the state required my name on the insurance to register it, and I didn't want to co-sign on insurance and affect my credit.

He ended up getting a DUI and it got impounded and auctioned off, and he hasn't paid me a dime, lol.

edit: I paid the credit card off not long after, so that's not an issue

lent my Dad 4 grand around 2 years ago coz he got invited by his m8 he hadn't seen in a few years to go to good ol' Straya for 3 months but couldn't afford it. It served as his spending money over there
he said he'll be able to afford paying me back when he sells the house but although he's been trying, hasn't been able to find a buyer yet.

never been to asked to lend a m8 a significant about of money before, the above is really the only example :/

Why would anyone "lend" 20 bucks.

If a friend asks me for under 100 I'll just give it to them.

Not my friends but I've lent my parents probably close to $10000 that I've never gotten back over the years. Main reason why I've basically cut off contact outside of holidays.

Around $1700
Was supposed to be "just a few months" but it took him 2 years to give it back, and he gave it at once so it was not like I was getting the money back gradually or anything
Had to "remind" him 4 times

I always knew he would give it back, but being a friend with him and seeing him "having a life" was annoying
At one hand, if he has the money to go to band show, he should have enough money to give me back
At the other hand, you can't ask someone to stop living just because he owes you money

I had an interesting situation with my sister, following my dad's funeral, wherein I "lent" her $11000 and then she proceeded to spend the money she was going to pay me back with.

The money was from my inheritance, and it was going to be going her way for her daughter's college fund anyway, but still...

It wasn't returned. Not anything to complain about now, but I was a little annoyed back then. Learned the quick way not to trust people who aren't closer friends.

This is a cost you agree to take on when you decide to carry a fetus to birth. I didn't ask to be born and if my parents didn't want to pay for me until I moved out the moment I became an adult they could have easily aborted.

Very bad argument and nothing close to guilting your child into lending money with promises of returning the money "at payday" when payday never arrives.

$100. My friend wanted to attend a class with his landlord's wife (he was having a hard time finding employment), so I loaned him the money. He never paid it back, and he's a terrible credit risk to this day. I let it slide since I was making good enough money to absorb the loss.

About $900 in rent money to cover a housemate while she was traveling; got it all when she returned.

Covering someone's rent is the only time I've lent real money, I think.

$500 to my sister when she was getting her doctorate and my mom said I should send her some money or gift cards cause she was strapped for cash. That sounded like a hassle to me so I just sent her the one check, which I gave her no advance warning for and purportedly she was in tears. Told her should could pay me back or not, I didn't really care. She did, though for the life of me I don't remember how long it took her.

Reading some of the topics here through the years made me realize that I'm fortunate to have such a trustworthy family.

If family counts, I lent my brother 60000 to help with a down payment on a house. I wasn't doing anything with it so I didn't mind. The plan is that they'll pay me back once they're done with the bank to pay less on interest (and I'll probably lend them another 50k soon just to help that happen faster).
