DEMON TRUCK

I can't fuck with matches like I used, but I still have my ways. Like telling stories that don't go anywhere, like the time I couldn't place a song. More than any other song Sky of Twilight (the instrumental version, at least) drove me insane when I couldn't figure out what it was. Usually that's whatever in guessing games because half the time it turns out that you didn't know it anyway, but it was on my phone, out of reach, so I knew I knew it. I desperately tried thinking of fucking mozell songs (of which I have zero on my phone) because of the wack instrumentation. Never would've guessed Atelier, and in light of how obnoxious the vocal replacement instrument was, I no longer have it saved. Don't know why I grabbed it in the first place. I know ellie has grabbed it, though, because she fucking bought the 44 cd Atelier collection thing. It took like half an hour to unpack everything, and now she has to go through it all to tag them. Tagging songs really is a pain, sometimes. It's not that hard when you only have a few, but it's still a whole process to connect your phone and get the songs and the album art and ugh. There's been mistakes with my taggings for a year I've been too lazy to fix. If you pay attention you'll see that I always guess that famous Chrono Trigger song as "Klagmar's Top VGM #1,840 - Chrono Trigger - Corridors of Time" because that's all I know it by. I don't think I ever used it so it won't show up in the Pastebin that way, but the way things have been lately most songs that have been used won't be on the Pastebin. I've just been too busy with finals and such to be motivated to get on it. Ive had three already and I still have another left, plus a test and paper last week. My last final is on Saturday at 8AM, can you believe that? The buses arent even running then. The professor offered the drive people who live in the city to class so they actually have a way to show up. They could just Uber, I guess. Hell, the professor himself probably Ubers; half the schools staff does. Even the Dean of Libraries, who despite having a designated parking spot has never been seen to use it, usually the one open spot in the whole lot. My friends will always go to that one hoping to find a spot, but they never, ever do. Maybe if the lots machinery wasnt so deprecated and the sign advertising open spaces actually worked itd save time. But then again, if that were the case they wouldnt have been able to steal the broken gate, which now proudly decorates the basement. Its much less exciting than the $800 chair he stole from a library, somehow. Its not small. He figured that if every student has to pay like $60 a semester for stolen stuff he might as well make the most from it. Not perfect logic, but its what everybody is going to jump to, and it likely costs the school money considering how hard people will try to find things to take. I knew a guy who would steal a wooden post every time hed come back drunk for a party. He had zero use for it, but he has like 30 in his room now. Maybe hell use them for javelins or something, but more than likely hell throw them out, just a complete waste. Just another joke that nobody will know about in ten years, another forgotten memory. Think about how many completely forgotten memes there must be. Like, every so often somebody will post on Twitter hey remember and the Internet will freak out because nobody had thought of that episode or that song in forever, but in another couple weeks itll fade away again. I havent seen a new Darude Sandstorm joke in a while; I wonder how long itll be until people have to actually ask what song that is again. Or Through the Fire and Flames, which might take longer since its actually great. One of my favorite videos is a remix that FamilyJules7x did of it, except instead of the actual cover he created its him and the vocalist vocalizing all the instruments and singing p<CONTINUED>

Ah, Sky of Twilight. Finally another of my favorites makes its appearance. Not a close match at all there. The other two are also pretty easy. Dark Man Stage feels a bit meandering to me, and I've never liked I'll Face Myself much.

Dark Man Stage
Sky of Twilight
Escaping the Courtyard Garden

Match 2 is close. I'll have to listen to both again tomorrow. As for the third match, I wish it was Phantom R's theme, which I think is much better than Escaping the Courtyard Garden. Actually, I may have to re-listen to both tracks in match three, as well... As far as match one goes, it's an easy choice for me, even though DNHC is good.

I wonder if some people will end up saying.... "too melody-focused" and and "lack of ideas" in regards to Dark Man Stage. But as a response to that, I say,

1) What do you expect out of a remix that's meant to enhance the original, and not create something new?
2) This is based on an NES game, and like 98% of NES music is melody-focused. What do you expect given point #1?

Now to talk about what I like about it....

-The percussion I could understand people disliking, but I think it's great for its purpose: high energy. And speaking of high energy, I enjoy the simple switch-up of sounds for the melody, wbut especially here the trumpet-synth gets saved for the high points of the remix. Yes, especially thar trumpet! Gives me a nice high. Also, jumping the octave between part 1 and part 2 of Dark Man's theme is cool.

-Secondly, the form of the piece. For those of you who don't know MM5's OST, there is not a moment in this remix that isn't from the MM5. That might sound like a negative, but if you consider how they were put together, it's actually pretty impressive. The Protoman Whistle is a cool way to kick it off. After that, it is followed by the Weapon Get theme, which works really well as an introduction to the primary material. Next, Dark Man's stage comes in (at 0:14). After that, a transition occurs... oh, hey, it's the MM5 Intro! Somehow it works a lot better as a transition than it would have simply as an "intro". Good thinking, whoever put this together! Finally, it finishes off with the MM5 Title Screen (at 1:49), acting as a nice secondary theme to finish off the loop.

Also, I love those glissandos such at 1:12 and 2:11....

Finally, I'd like to talk a little about why I like the original material....I've got a decent amount to say. Maybe it's no Napalm Man, but I would say the original Dark Man theme is still one of the best themes from the series. (rhythmic variety in the melody I would say is the most important factor in mega man music)

-in the first Dark Man phrase, the re-using of the melody rhythm from measure 1 re-used at the end of the first half of the phrase, but with a different melodic fragment.
-I like how the melody of section 2 takes advantage of the dorian scale from section 1 to lead into a major key feel (in the M-vii)
-I like how the key stays the same, but changes to minor when going into section three.
-I like the difference in the ending/cadence harmonies, when they get repeated, for sections 1 and 2.
-I like how the melody takes advantage of the syncopation to create a couple of great moments where it switches over to a straight rhythm, especially where it finishes with four quarter notes (ending on a whole note).
-Finally, my favorite thing of all, I like how section three takes advantage of the dorian again by ending on the third of the vi-diminished!

Oh, yeah, and the MM5 Intro (not the title screen) is just freaking awesome, but I've written enough about Dark Man already, except I'll mention I love the way it ends on an expanded dominant with some diminished on top of it (listen to 1:45 - 1:48, though it's kind of hard to hear the root of the chord in this remix)....

(just trying my best to provide some persuasion in case it can sway a vote, you know, if the match is close....though I fear Dark Man's theme might be too disliked regardless. Seeing it lose would indeed make it a dark day. I would love to do more write-ups, but I don't have the time to do so, and they mostly wouldn't be very good.)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Dark Man Stage
Atelier Escha & Logy - Sky of Twilight
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure - Escaping the Courtyard Garden

Yeah, I'm super iffy about the first match. This is one of those cases of being in the right mood for one thing versus another, and DEMON TRUCK is a really fun listen. Dark Man is very layered and technical, but I find the lead synth to be really underwhelming to the point of damaging the whole. Dark Man has flesh, but the ingredients aren't mingling. DEMON TRUCK is more consistent, but also really musically simple, like a Turrican something-or-other. It's close, but Dark edges with the tech points.

Dark Man Stage
Sky of Twilight
Escaping the Courtyard Garden

Dark Man Stage is cool stuff! Definitely top level Mega Man Smash remix. DNHC is pretty great too! Can't really decide right now, but my bracket has DMS, so I guess that gets my vote! These songs should win all the matches imo.

I like the part of Sky of Twilight where she's all like or whatever but other than that the vocals are not so good, and the solos aren't so good either. The song just goes all over the place. Man. Intersection is cool at times, but I oddly don't like the electric guitar very much. Hmm.

This Rhythm Thief song is way better than that other shitty song we had (Real Chevalier Diabolique?). Just nice and good all the way through. Glad I have an excuse to vote against IFM.

Not crazy for Dark Man stage, lots of better Mega Man tracks from SSBU
DEMON TRUCK (Demon Truck)

Man, I've really slept on Sky of Twilight, this is so much better than I remember it being. Only real gripe I have with this is that it just sounds like a bunch of cool things slapped together, but in an incoherent way that doesn't mash well. I like Kanako Itou and I like the instruments/melody here, but I don't feel they go well together. Intersection is also really cool, only tough match today.

No brainer for the last match.

Demon Truck - Dead Neon Hell City
Atelier Escha & Logy - Sky of Twilight
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure - Escaping the Courtyard Garden

Shorter writeups today because I'm gonna be out for the night and I haven't had the time to write up most of this.

MATCH 1

Dark Man Stage is okay. It has a cool beat and is interesting enough for me to like it to some degree. I do have to say, though, what is up with the Protoman whistle here? It sounds oddly detuned and I don't like that at all. The melody can be pretty neat too, I guess. I'm now realizing that the whistle sounds like Don't Turn It Off haha.

Dead Neon Hell City is more interesting to me, so this gets my vote. I feel like both songs in this match have a bit of a darker sound to them, but Dead Neon Hell City I'd say has a style that I like more.

MATCH 2

Sky of Twilight is my #2 favorite song in the contest, just behind Sakura no Uta (RIP Sakura no Uta, by the way). That makes this my favorite song currently alive right now as well! This is another song that does everything right for me with a great, strong melody and really nice vocals. There's a lot of variation in this song from energetic guitar parts to more relaxed parts like 0:53 as well as that crazy guitar solo towards the end, all of which I love. This is definitely my favorite discovery in the contest and I can't believe that I hadn't heard this before.

Intersection: Me vs. You is good too, but yeah, it's up against my #2 in the contest, so sorry :(

MATCH 3

Escaping the Courtyard Garden is pretty cool. I remember liking this more than the other Rhythm Thief song in the contest. The drum beat is pretty neat and I like the organ stuff going on here.

I'll Face Myself is good too. Pretty close match but I'd say Escaping the Courtyard Garden's just a little bit better.

Sky of Twilight > Dead Neon Hell City > Intersection: Me vs. You = Escaping the Courtyard Garden > I'll Face Myself > Dark Man Stage

Rankings have been done pretty hastily too in the interest of time. Go Sky of Twilight!!

Dead Neon Hell City
Intersection: Me vs. You
I'll Face Myself

There was a time when I claimed Dark Man Stage to be my favourite classic Mega Man stage theme! (this is not true now) I always admired the Mega Man 5 soundtrack in particular for its cool, nicely-arranged tracks using the NES soundchip. Without that as a restriction it feels somehow less compelling to follow the different layers of the stage theme and think 'oh, this is this channel doing that thing!'. This arrangement isn't without its own charms, though-- I don't love the synths used to play the layers of melody but the fast percussion is nice. The sort of interlude that occurs at 1:14-1:33 is a personal highlight. Medleys aren't my favourite thing in general but this track handles the different melodies and the transitions between them fairly seamlessly, which is nice.

Sky of Twilight feels a bit jumpy in its oscillation between styles (both in arrangement in melody). I find that I significantly prefer the non-electric guitar parts-- the intro, 0:53, 1:29, etc. I think the electric guitar thrown into the mix feels a bit too much of a wall of sound. 3:05 should feel interesting but it's exhausting, somehow. Then 3:47 just goes back to these airy synths playing cool chords like they belong in the menu screen of a shmup. And again, I like that part! But sometimes I just want to take a break from all of it.

I like the energy of the fast exciting drums but I don't really care much for the organ, and overall don't prefer this arrangement of Phantom R's theme over the original. I do think the bass really really rocks out here, though-- easily my favourite aspect of this track.

Dark Man Stage
Intersection: Me vs. You
Escaping the Courtyard Garden

(wow if I did the first letter only thing like some people are doing it spells die wow spooky)

SSBU-DMS -- Man this match is a thing. I'd say these are two of my three favorites on this half of Bracket D (though I don't immediately know where the third lies in relation to these two). This song is great, love the active drums and all the great digital synth sounds. I'd say those are the strongest points of this song but the actual melody and whatnot isn't weak, but not a lot worth saying about it either. Other strongest parts I would say are like the very beginning & loop point, like 2:09 where that one synth just fades out in the back while the strong bass notes play onwards, as well as the little "dark" buildup at 1:44. Dark man has the better ditigal sounds but I kind of feel like I can get slightly more behind Demon Truck's actual "song" (melody tune notes). But, if anything that's really slight, and I guess Dark Man's strengths outweigh Demon Truck's. But either song advancing here would be good!

AE&L-SoT -- Some interesting instrumentation and good variety in the types of styles presented in this song, and a fun, almost chaotic swapping between them. But it's got vocals in the focus and I don't want 'em, especially that main singer's voice. That said there really is some fun energy in this song with a really great, wide range of styles presented, which does include emotional sad stuff I don't like though. Hmm, even if it didn't have those lyrics I'm not sure if I'd vote for it. Because this song's real strength is all of it's fun variety and stuff, whereas while Steam Intersection is a bit more "limited" in the genre it focuses on, it does it real well at getting tones & keys that work Really well for me, and I realize that like, :36 and especially 1:27 of it come off stronger to me than any of the moments of SkyTwilight. But maybe that's just because I'm too Angry About Voices. Or maybe not, whoo knows?

RT&tET-EtCG -- This song manages to come off as very... plain to me. Maybe I'm still offput by the churchland organ. The melody progression at 1:21 sort of reminds me of Little Big Planet I guess, and it's pretty cool right there I suppose, but like I said, the song seems too plain. The persona song is really plain too. What is with today? I prefer the instrumentation of PersonaSong but there's something about the actual notes that seems...gross to me. For that reason I'm going with Court Yard Escape, I guess.

Match 1:

Cool Dark Man remix. It grabs a not-so-good piece from Mega Man... 3 (i think?) and gives it a cool twist, improving on it an awful lot. This was a close match, but I give the nod to the Truck here.

Match 2:

So I was hearing about a certain song called "Sky of Twilight" being kind of hyped around. Now that I listen to it... Well, I certainly expected better from an Atelier game (although those games' OSTs usually have a kind of random level of quality now that I think about it), and the song goes over the top at some point which is not really appreciated, as well as lasting way too long. I can see that this is the same singer of Steins;Gate (or at least incredibly similar). This song is really messy for the lack of direction it has. Me vs. You is a nice example of how to do a solidly good (albeit a little uninspired and generic) rock song.

NOTE: Thank God I made the rankings afterwards since I would've voted for the other song. I hope this hasn't happened to me before. (I hate it when songs with varying degrees of quality within the same piece, such as Sky of Twilight, get in the way...)

Match 3:

So I came into the topic, saw the Rhythm Thief cover and thought: "Hmm... I don't remember another Rhythm Thief song. Maybe this is the previous one". But then I realized: "Oh no, it's a brand new song with a Bye... Well, time to find out how good this actually is". After listening to it, I must say I'm extremely impressed. I was fearing another trumpet fiasco like the Rhythm Thief song that retired last year, but man, what a nice surprise! This is by far the best Rhythm Thief song I've heard, and it blows its competition out of the water. The percussions are a great choice, NO ANNOYING TRUMPETS, and my favorite part: having the actual melody of the song of last year, but with a much more pleasant instrumentation, completely and utterly redeeming my cringy past experience with this OST. Huge thumbs up!

I'll Face Myself is just... I mean, it's just Tale of the Game but not really good.

Wow, the rankings:

Escaping the Bad Listening Experience Garden = Alive Neon Heaven City > This Remix Is From Mega Man 3, Right? >> Twilight Sky of Varying Degrees >= BFFs: You and Me >> Tale of the Game (Reprise [In Disguise])
