I was thinking about how I've never played this games before and since they're so close to Red and blue anyways, the only ones I've played extensively at all, I figured it would be a nice experience

Eh HGSS is in the "3D game before B/W" camp so it's super slow, not as bad as Platinum but still

Other than that I don't think so.

Gold and silver were huge upgrades from r/b/y at the time and are still probably my favorite in the series

But if you've played any pokemon since then it won't have the same effect. Just do the new one, although I honestly don't feel like any pokemon game is a different enough experience to be worth playing through

You've done it all before

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Outside of nostalgia the remakes are better than the originals among all Pokemon games.

Only reason is if you don't want to pay the crazy prices for HG/SS, since GSC is on the 3DS e-shop at a fairly cheap price.

Mm I'd definitely take Emerald over OR/AS. Emerald just paid so much more attention to gym leader design and that means a lot to me! And I feel like I played Emerald too late for nostalgia to be a major factor here.

Agreed on the rest though.

GSC on the eshop can transfer directly through Bank to Alola whereas HGSS have to go through the transfer system from 4 to 5 to Bank, if youre interested in doing that at all. They also come with a free Celebi after beating the E4 so if you havent got one of those its a way.

Wait, this is actually a compelling reason if you care about modern Pokemon. Especially combined with the eshop price.

That said, HG/SS obviously has a lot more polish and content if you don't care about that.

As someone that always preferred to play RBY over FRLG, there's not much reason to go GSC over HGSS.

I mean playing something very basic can be a reason in itself, plus pokebank transferring and creating glitch pokemon to transfer... but other than that just go HGSS, it's a fantastic upgrade.

Well mainly cloning pokemon is insanely easy with Gen 1 & Gen 2

But there's also this thing: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Celebi_Egg_glitch

... Gen 1 has a much much simpler way to make pokemon with the Mew Glitch. Pokemon glitches are pretty insane since you can get random code to pop up into other text dialogues

I certainly know the Mew Glitch transfers fine, I used to to catch all 151 Pokemon in the VC Red before beating my 4th gym, and I transferred them with no problem.

The VC releases also allow you to turn your shiny Gyarados into a shiny Ditto and then breed it for easy shinies because shininess was genetic back then and you have roughly a 1/64 chance when using a shiny Ditto.

I dislike the notion that there's no reason to play the original Pokemon games over the remakes. I like the visuals and the music of GSC better and although this is super objective it just has more of a "feel" of being a sprawling single player adventure to me, maybe something about the age of the game just portrays that better somehow. Both versions of the game's system feel outdated now to some extent, but I just kinda think the original is more fun to play through for whatever reason. Though I do like that HGSS has your Pokemon follow you around and it has really good minigames.

As someone looking to start VC Blue soon, hows the Mew bit work? My son and I have all the versions between us so thats the only one I would need to glitch.

Require:
- A Pokemon with a teleporting move (like... Teleport, Dig, Fly... I guess Escape Rope works too)
- A trainer with long-range vision (they can see you from the farthest map length in the screen, just as you see them)
- Another whatever trainer to fight, must have at least 1 space of distance between them and a position they can spot you at

Method:
- (save first, you might miss your timing!)
- Find the trainer with long ranged vision, and walk off to where they're facing but 1 step out of their vision so they can't see you and you can't see them yet)
- Make that one step into their vision and open up your menu before the screen loads the trainer
- Make your escape (Teleport, Dig, Fly, Rope)
- When the menu closes to make the escape animation, first the trainer will finally spot you and try to start the battle... but instead of battling you will just do you Fly or whatever
- After you've escaped, you'll find that you can't open your menu anymore, or get into wild battles!
- To fix this you need to get into battle with the second trainer! Go do that
- As mentioned, fight the 2nd trainer by stepping at least 1 space away so they have to walk towards you
- After the battle your buttons will be restored, use your escape to go back to the Pokemon Center again, and make your way back to towards the first, long-range trainer
- On your way to that trainer, once you change routes (ie change from Cerulean to Route 25), your menu will open up.
- Once you close the menu, a battle will start with a "random" (not random) wild pokemon

Manipulation:
- The "wild" Pokemon is dependant on the last Pokemon battled (typically, the last Pokemon of the 2nd Trainer)
- It doesn't *have* to be the 2nd Trainer's last Pokemon, you can go fight a wild Pokemon after that, and that will be the last Pokemon battled until you finish the glitch (or another Pokemon you fight after that)
- Ditto are wild east of Fuschia, so you can use Ditto to manipulate the last Pokemon battled to something you can control (your own Pokemon)
- The ID/species of the wild Pokemon is dependant of the Special stat of the last Pokemon battled
- The wild Pokemon's level is dependant on the attack modifier of the last Pokemon battled... aka if they've been Growl'd. Default is 7, six (max) stage-downs brings it 1, six (max) stage-ups brings it to 13. This isn't really useful other than for the Experience Underflow Glitch to get the Pokemon easily to level 100. However if you're not prepared for the experience underflow glitch you might freeze your PC box with a level 1 Pokemon

Summary
- (save first!)
- Get into view of long-range trainer, open menu & escape (Fly, etc)
- Battle 2nd trainer with a space between to fix your menu
- Control your first Pokemon to a manipulator - one with a Special stat corresponding to the Pokemon you want
- ref: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_index_number_(Generation_I)
- Battle ditto, have it turn into your Manipulator
- OPTIONAL: use Growl, or let Ditto raise his attack to manipulate level (don't catch Ditto in this case)... not much reason unless doing experience underflow
- Fly/escape towards the first, long-range trainer.
- Menu opens on route change, close menu to battle your Mew Glitch'd Pokemon!

The Mew Example
- Long-Range Trainer: Doesn't actually matter, but there's a guy on the west end of Route 25 beside the water beside Nugget Bridge
- Walk in his range and use Abra to Teleport (can be found in that route)
- Menu Fixing Trainer: A Youngster in the "maze" part of Route 25 w/level 17 Slowpoke (has Special stat 21). Be sure to step with at least 1 extra space in front of him!
- *note* you could just "menu fix" off a different trainer, just so long as the Youngster's Slowpoke is the last Pokemon you battle
- Teleport back to PokeCenter, walk up Nugget Bridge and then SUPRISE MEW FIGHT

... this should be a fine guide
