No amount of KH3 hype can make me forget Sora lost to Pikachu with Blue in the poll, and in general I've thought he's overrated.

Red is somewhere between Pikachu and Blue in strength probably so sounds like a good bet to me

Well, Pikachu managed to beat Sora in 2013 with Blue almost costing that match for Pikachu via LFF. Sora/Red will be match without LFF to worry about, but it's now a matter of how strong you think Red is compared to Pikachu.

Its weird cause in 2010 Red barely beat Ocelot and put 38 on X but in 2013 he looked like a slayer (but probably rode the Pokemon wave)

I have Red in my first rough draft but i also have him going really deep into the bracket. That could probably be my biggest bracket killer.

also Kanto GO drops next month and Nintendo actually has a popular system at the moment

This is a tough one, even within the KH fanbase Sora can be divisive. I feel Smash may have to be considered as well, since Pokemon Trainer is back, who looks a lot like Red. And then in general Pokmon is popular. Its definitly a character vs series type of deal, and I think Pokmon will win out here.

Red definitely. I have little faith in most Square characters presently, but who knows. If the site gets swarmed from non-regulars I highly doubt a lot of the Square or RPG characters will hold up too well.

The first signs of Pokemon's resurgence actually happened in 2006 where it lost to Metroid in a somewhat close match during the Series Contest. This resurgence happened during a time when Diamond/Pearl was only months away from being released in Japan (and a few months later in the US/Canada). Pokemon's real strength wouldn't become apparent until the 2009 games contest.

As for the Pokemon Let's Go games, there is actually very little hype for those games among the hardcore fans. On the boards for Pokemon Let's Go, you can see right away that people aren't feeling the hype for those games.

In the previous contest stats topic, I have commented on Pokemon not having the same amount of love that the rest of Nintendo has on this site. But I will post it here as well.

While Nintendo fans will play most of the games that Nintendo puts out, being a Nintendo fan does not necessarily mean that you are a Pokemon fan as well. Modern Pokemon does not have anywhere near the playrate of the Gen 1/2 games, and a lot of people quit Pokemon after Gen 1 or Gen 2. I don't think any of the Pokemon games after Gen 3 would have a playrate above 50%. There are still many people who quit Pokemon after Gen 1 or Gen 2 who have not yet returned to the series. I cannot think of any other Nintendo series besides Pokemon where a large number of people have quit the series and have yet to return to the series again.

I suppose the Gen 8 game coming next year on the Switch could be revolutionary and bring back some of these people since it will be the first true mainline game to be playable on a big screen TV (people have been wanting that for a long time).
