The comics are absolutely terrible. You'd be much better off just accepting that the franchise functionally ended with season 7.

Or, conversely, waiting until they do the reboot and probably ruin it.

The few TPBs I checked out did look pretty awful, tbh. Granted, I also lost interest in the show before it ended.

Season 12 is the end, and the last issue gets released on the 19th.

Plus the comics are pretty bad. I read a few of them and it honestly felt like they took the ridiculousness of Season 7, turned it up to eleven, and stopped giving a damn.

It's kind of a case of art from adversity (or the lack thereof). It feels like, with no upper limit on "special effects" (because you can draw tons of things you could never afford on a TV show), the comics almost immediately go way over the top and feels kind of stupid for it.

Plus, having all the dialogue spoken by comic characters (who don't have actors who can object to storylines, phrasing, or improv their own interpretation of dialogue), and without having that extra bit of charisma and personality specific actors bring to their own performance, means most of it comes out sounding kind of wooden at best, incredible dumb or eyeroll-inducing at worst.

Whedon's never been as good a writer as people like to think he is. A large part of his success stems from having other people in the writers' room helping with ideas (which the comic doesn't have), and having a knack for casting phenomenal actors in roles they excel at (which the comic doesn't have). So the comics sort of wind up being this soulless collection of bad ideas that no one was there to talk Whedon out of.

I've always sort of gotten Star Wars prequel/EU vibes out of the Buffy/Angel comics. Namely, that they're kind of disappointing if you're a fan of the originals.

tbh, I was kinda tempted to comment on the "special effects" angle as well, considering some of the stuff shown.

I did know. The comics aren't as good as they could be, sadly, and they're annoyingly hard to get hold of at reasonable prices.

Really? I've seen at least some of the TPBs kinda cheap at places. I guess that's kind of a YMMV thing, though.
