True story, the only games I've played in the past two months are LttP Randomizers, LttP (to try to git gud at randomizer), and FTL

I'm decent at fighting games but it requires more of my time than MOBAs and I just don't have the time to put in to be decent at fighting games anymore

jrpgs often have really bad game design choices that add unnecessary elements that aren't fun

you all just don't realize it because at a certain time those were the easiest games to make and sometimes they were done really good

i did not exist before 1999 so i did not play a lot of those games before I played other (often newer) ones

nowadays we have better technology to make more intensive sequences work better and to allow for more creative game design and often times the genres that use sections like that are the ones i like the best (maybe by coincidence, maybe for this exact reason)

Sports games are literally a plague to the society. I think it was what killed off the Incans and ate the Egyptians' crops.

Racing games are also pretty inherently uninteresting.

I mean differential skill may not entirely matter. There are reasons you could enjoy the game less unrelated to losing. Just clown mashing with your friends might not be satisfying to you because none of you have any idea of what you're doing, not because of win rate.

I mean I could name dozens of things I liked more once I learned how to play them a bit better. And because of stuff like matchmaking, my friends also being bad at them, and frankly not really being a sore loser to begin with, I can't really say it's because my win rate went up. Hell Virtua Fighter is a great example of a series that I thought was incredibly boring until I actually learned it a bit-- I'm still not very good at Virtua Fighter but I do actually enjoy it now. Marvel vs Capcom games get a lot more interesting when you actually start to understand how assists work and when to call them, and can reliably do some basic combos, etc etc. Not just fighters though. Chess is probably the best example of a game I appreciated more as I got better at it.

Or for an example of a game I know you actually play, League of Legends. You're telling me you never started to appreciate that game more once you got more of a clue what you were doing?

you spend 40 minutes practicing a combo in training mode for a fighter and you might get the timing down for that one character

the time investment is just not worth it for fighters and that's why the fgc is pretty much a dead scene

Well you don't have to be that hardcore to enjoy a fighter

You do need to progress beyond a very basic level of hitting buttons until one of the two sides falls down though

OK I can understand the second part about fighting games but to say that Moba-genre games can be improved easily is uh...what
LOL might be easier than Dota but it still takes years to master

in college I had 3 roommates that I spent a lot of time playing SF4

we pretty much only played SF4 for like 3 years and went to local tournaments and we were just decent at the game

if we spent that amount of time playing LoL we would all be Diamond 1s in LoL

like you think you are good at fighting games because you can do a dp and then a random super in SF4 to your friends, my friends and I spent countless hours in training mode practicing FADC combos and 1 frame links

Honestly you can improve in fighting games to the level where you can improve at LoL just by playing the game pretty equally I think. Full disclosure I've probably haven't gone into training mode for more than a few hours total combined in my entire life and while I'm not pro level, guess what, "diamond 1" isn't either.

I'm no fighting game master or anything but I have gone to EVO to be fodder for fun and wasn't completely blown out, and got a decent rating in Marvel 3 online when I actually played it.

Like the level of mastery you're comparing is more like high challenger level dedication-- forget diamond 1.

Well as someone who got up to Diamond 3, LoL is many times more complicated than fighting games and requires a much higher time investment to get good at and understand. Assuming that you are equally proficient in both genres, you could become a fighting game pro much faster than a MOBA pro.

Also if you're in training mode for 40 minutes regularly getting one frame links or whatever and can't consider yourself a bit better than "decent" at your local fighting game scene I'm wondering if there's something that's fundamentally not clicking with you or if you have the uber god mode local fighting game scene to end all local fighting game scenes. There's so much in fighting games that isn't about timing windows and such.

I mean in SF4 when I did a bit of training for EVO I got pretty good with Juri just learning a couple of simple combos-- nothing super tough. You generally only need the hardcore combos when you're at the absolute top level and you need to extract every last bit of damage out of every bit offense you've got. But I mean, keeping a cool head under pressure, spacing, what to do when the other guy is down-- you don't learn that stuff in training mode and that's way more important than one frame links or whatever.

like 1 challenger isn't going to 1v5 a team of diamond 1s in the 95lp range

and yes LoL is shit but it's fun to play when the meta is fast paced

and the fgc is dead compared to LoL, just look at twitch numbers

EVO and Capcom Cup numbers are like 150k viewers which is just the average weekly LCS viewership
