Nah, I'll be here until it dies out. If it does get to the point where B8 shrinks to near-nothingness, I'll either give up message board posting or maybe go to Reddit (though I don't really like the format there, so I'd probably just lurk).

I'll never find an online community like this one again - that's for sure. Are they even popping up in 2017?

I've been pretty displeased with board 8 lately, actually for the past few years. I remember there was a time where there were so many great topics just flowing like a river and you can click on any of them and it's easy to get in on the chat. Now you can just view a topic, leave for 12 hours, and the same topic will still be on the front page when you get back

Everything is just so slow and boring. and topics are kind of hard to get into now.

But despite that, it's like, where the hell else would I go? I got roots here. I'm too old to start fresh lol

Reddit is good for getting answers to questions. If I want specific info about, say, a video game boss, I'd rather have a Reddit topic than a gamefaqs topic because the correct answer is probably voted to the top.

But for actual discussions I want chronological order to see the back-and-forth of arguments and how things develop.

Also I don't know anyone over there and I know (most) everyone here.

I only lurk the fantasy literature subreddit, but it's way more active than this site's Books & Literature board, and other declining forums I visit. It's a decent community and where I get most of my book recommendations nowadays.

I post on Reddit sometimes. It's definitely possible to have discussions there but I do feel it tends to isolate things a bit. Like usually you've got a few subthreads where two people are just going back and forth in each. Which reduces clutter a bit, but also kinda discourages other people from giving input. Also because of the way the voting system is you basically have to be there live if you have anything important to say because if you post after it's fresh you probably won't get too many upvotes.

All of that is not necessarily even a bad thing but it it does create a really different experience I feel.

Of course there is the whole sort by last post thing but I feel like a lot of people don't actually do that.

Why "quit"? I don't post much at all anymore but I still pop by to lurk a topic now and again and see some familiar names. It's not like anyone's expecting you to be here 8 hours a day like a job. Just tailor your time however you want.

I like reddit for content consumption but there's no community, just reddit celebrities. If you want to talk to people you know, you have to go way smaller.

What I mean by that is that some people post so prolifically on reddit that the hivemind starts to recognize their username. After that it's a cycle, since people recognize them they get more upvotes, which means their posts are more visible, which means they get more people recognizing them... and so on. This happens both reddit-wide (well-known accounts have their own fanclubs https://www.reddit.com/r/Poem_for_your_sprog/ , https://www.reddit.com/r/Shitty_Watercolour/ and host AMAs which receive thousands of comments https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/3aungz/ , https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/29nqnl/i_am_shitty_watercolour_i_went_from_painting/ ) as well as on specific boards (I can name probably the top 2-3 famous faces on each of the smaller specific-game boards I read, but not really anyone else).

About 98% of the people on this board contribute positively in some manner. Even people I hate make a valid point, relatable post, or even just plain old make me laugh every now and then. That's more than I can say for some other boards on this site.

But there are topics that will bring out the absolute worst in literally everybody and it's best just to stay away from those topics. If the topic title + post count looks like there's probably nothing good happening in there, may as well just stay out.
