Board 8 > Are you playing any horror games this October?

I know we have a decent number of horror fans on this board, and we all love arbitrary themed challenges (every year at least one person here attempts 31 Days of Horror), so I was just curious if anyone had anything planned for next month. It's getting close!

I've cleared out a few big games from my backlog in September, so I have a chance to try out a few games. I wanted to wrap up Danganronpa 2 before V3 hit, and while that didn't happen, I still might be able to play both over the month. I know they're on the lighter end of the horror VN spectrum, certainly nothing like Corpse Party or Tokyo Dark, but they should count. I also have DreadOut on PC, which I've been meaning to play for years. It's an Indonesian indie horror game similar to Fatal Frame. It looks rough around the edges, but isn't that the case for all the best horror games? Oh, and I should get back to my Dying Light playthrough with Digi, where the greatest terror is a vertical dropkick.

So, what've you guys got?

BTW, I saw the game of the month club will be playing through Oxenfree. Do that if you haven't! Very cool adventure horror game that takes the dialogue choices from a Telltale game but manages to deliver conversations with a more natural cadence.

Got a few horror LPs planned for the channel. 3-man playthrough of Until Dawn and co-op 7 Days to Die (if that counts). Thinking I might play White Day for the day itself and possibly might start a co-op playthrough of Alien Isolation, depending on my friend's schedule.

I've already beaten all the big name horror games out there but one that has piqued my interest over the years that I haven't tried yet is Rule of Rose. I liked Haunting Ground so I think that game might be a safe bet for me.

I have a few I've been meaning to try for a while now. Until Dawn, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Calling, and Fatal Frame IV are all in my queue, as well as Resident Evil 7 on PSVR. I don't think I'll get through everything but hopefully a few at least.

I planned on finishing Little Nightmares and maybe picking up Observer. And getting back to Dying Light sounds good.

I usually like to check out freeware horror games from RPGmaker and the like, I've found some pretty good gems before like Dreaming Mary. And of course I'll replay my favorites.

Hey, what are everyone's favorite horror games by the way? I don't tend to play them too much, but I really enjoy the few I've played. REmake is probably my favorite of the genre, but I kind of have a preference for the Amnesia/Outlast approach in terms of actually scaring the crap out of me. Outlast was great but I kind of got bored around the 2 hour mark because it was pretty repetitive and a lot of the tension vanished since the chases are pretty redundant.

I love the Silent Hill games. 2, 3, Shattered Memory are among my favourite games, period. I'm also partial to the Fatal Frame series, the second Siren game, and SOMA.

Yeah I think Outlast works best in small doses. I just played the Outlast DLC and thought it was better than the main game. I also really enjoyed the Outlast 2 demo, which unfortunately isn't available anymore. Have you played SOMA?

REmake (as you said), and Silent Hill 2 and 3 are masterpieces. Haunting Ground and Rule of Rose are great if you can get your hands on them. Dino Crisis takes Resident Evil and replaces with dinosaurs and it's one of the more challenging examples in the genre. Both Metro games are extremely atmospheric and melancholy with a bit more action to them. You might get a kick out of Layers of Fear or Alien: Isolation for more Outlast-style games.

I think if someone's main criticism of Outlast is that it's too long, they might not care for Alien: Isolation, which goes on f o r e v e r.

The new Prey game, in addition to being my favourite game this year, is also one of the best horror games I've played. The encounters are tense, with its dreadful atmosphere heightened by the light Nemesis system (RE3 version, not Mordor) it has going on.

Another game I don't see mentioned often is Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. It's more classically horror than the modern interpretation of horror which amounts to "scares = horror," but it does have one level specifically that stands among the most terrifying experiences I've had in a video game.
