If it's too ripe, the alcohol content ruins the taste. Not ripe enough and it's bland and taste like eating nothing. And the onion aftertaste can be too strong. It doesn't lend itself very well for that purpose, that or the experience of eating it cannot be replicated without the flesh itself maybe. I've had a couple of different durian flavored things and they were bad, I could not finish them. I liked the fruit itself however. NioraptH posted... D24 or D101 or Musang King are the best types of durian... These are Malaysia/Singapore specific however. The stuff exported to the west is usually from Thailand. Yeah, it was from Thailand. I mean I would try the different kinds if I was able to, but even among the dozens of apple cultivars I've sampled I can't tell that much difference in the large majority of them. I was just glad to be able to actually sample this one; ever since I moved to a large metro area I've found a passion in sampling exotic fruits. The smell of it has lessened in its offensiveness to me, though I still wouldn't describe it as pleasant. Taste wise, I feel it tastes like a combination of mild onions, bananas and pineapples, maybe with like, cream cheese. Quite obviously I am going to be downing 90% of it or better so yeah, good thing I didn't waste money! It was a lot more pricey than I expected, given what I researched online I was expecting to pay no more than $16 but ended up paying over $20 for it ($2.99 /lb). I went with the largest one they had because it looked like it would be the best one. I'm having some of it now! It's not exactly something I feel like I could down in one sitting, but maybe... You'll likely take longer peeling an apple than getting the durian loose from it's spiky cage. Deceptive, because it's cousin the jackfruit is without a doubt the most grueling fruit I've ever seen to work with.
