So, as I think I have said here before, I tried playing Deus Ex some time ago. I got all the way up to Liberty Island then stopped for one reason or another. Well,I figured I should give the game another chance and try it again. I literally know absolutely nothing about the story or characters for this game, so maybe no spoilers? And I don't need to be told what build is the best, but it there's something I absolutely shouldn't do with my character then you can let me know.

That made me chuckle. Anyway, I don't think there is much that can ruin the game for you, just do what you want. That's the beauty of the game, honestly. There are so many ways to customize your character and still make things work well.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
swimming is the most useless and i think environmental training was likewise mostly useless though sliiiightly more useful than swimming. aside from that most everything else has some merit to it. i would recommend some computer skills so you can hack into things better, because without it you are essentially shooting yourself in the foot.

No one tell him about the hacking/lockpicking cheat or else he will keep using that and ruin part of the game, that's what happened to me halfways through
GANON1025 posted... Oh, I guess I should mention I'm going to do this with that New Vision mod. Are there any other essential mods to look out for?
No other essential mods, but there is one that fixes a few of the game's "quirks" I guess you could say. I prefer the game still without gameplay-enhancing mods but that's just me.

I don't know if Shifter changes the augmentations much, it just adds a bunch of weapons and removes some of the exploits(like the lockpick cheat and unlimited skill points).
There are also a few "deleted scenes" iirc.

It changes some augmentations, and adds a few (skul gun). It also gives you skill points for incapacitating enemies/using stealth (although the balance there is pretty bad)
Wouldn't recommend it to a new player, at any rate.
AlecTrevelyan006 posted... Is Shifter the mod that makes some of the augmentations not suck?
Basically. It also removes a bunch of niggling annoyances, like always picking up knives when you have a better melee weapon in your inventory. I'd actually recommend BioMod, which is a spin-off of Shifter; it greatly modifies the way augmentations work, making some of them only expend bio-electric energy when you actually use them. For instance, you can leave aggressive defense on, and it won't drain your energy until an enemy shoots a rocket at you and it explodes in their face.
It also lets you climb up stuff which, imo, is way more useful.

Yeah, it kinda ruined part of the game for me too, but I didn't find out until I was pretty close to the end so it wasn't as big a deal.

but yes, this first area of the game very much demonstrates the awesomeness that is deus ex.
fun little tidbit of art imitating life:
During sections of the game where the New York skyline is visible in the background, the two towers of the World Trade Center are noticeably missing; the real towers were destroyed a year after the game was released. Harvey Smith has explained that due to texture memory limitations, the portion of the skyline with the twin towers exists in the game's data files but had to be left out of the final game, with the other half mirrored in place of it. According to Smith, during the game's development, the developers justified the lack of the towers by stating that terrorists had destroyed the World Trade Center earlier in the game's storyline.

Well this wasn't such a great start. I really did want to actually begin playing and all today, but that technical problem and other stuff got in the way. Hopefully I can get the game straightened out and start tomorrow.

I try using the other renderer, and why I try playing the game my mouse and keyboard doesn't work with it. Oh man, is this game even worth all this trouble?

I take responsibility/credit for this, at least partially.
Also, that looks like a pretty decent opening set of skills, though if you don't mind a recommendation, focus on small arms at the start and wait until a certain point to go into low-tech/melee. If you ever get stuck on something don't hesitate to ask BTW, everybody's HYPE to see you go through a great game! :)

(also, buy some stealth if you're not getting weaponskills - and invest in at least one weaponskill later on, there's a single unavoidable fight that is a ***** and a half if you have no training)
PS: Ninja'd, but yeah, minicrossbow is good. Definitely the right choice for a ninja-style playthrough like you seem to want.

Well that was pretty easy. I think the mistake I made before was trying to go in from the front, which is way hard to do from what I've heard. Also I got stuck trying to get around guards to do a side objective when I could have skipped it. Also, I didn't know I could loot bodies the first time so I ran out of ammo fast.

GANON1025 posted... Oh yeah, this time I decided to get in by climbing up the containers in the back and sneaking up to the top that way.

Unatco HQ is pretty cool, there's a bunch of rooms to loot and even a basketball! There's some ugly neanderthal mechanical augmented guys giving me lip, but they're just jealous.
