Hillary Clinton on protests: Many young people don't know very much at all about the history of the Middle East.

Former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday said many young people shes spoken to don't know very much at all about Middle Eastern history or history in general.

In an interview with MSNBCs Morning Joe, to discuss a play that the former Democratic presidential nominee produced, host Joe Scarborough asked Clinton to weigh in on radicalism on college campuses, and protesters funded by Qatar who are ripping the legacy of the Clintons and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Sort of radicalism that has mainstream students getting propaganda whether its from their professors, or whether its from communist Chinese government through TikTok calling the president of the United States Genocide Joe, calling you and President Clinton war criminals, actually stopping the naming of a building after Madeleine Albright because they claim professors claim, some of the same professors that took part of the most radical elements of the protests over the past couple of weeks called Madeleine Albright a war criminal, Scarborough said to Clinton. What do we do about it?

I have had many conversations, as you have had, with a lot of young people over the last many months now, Clinton said. And you're right: They don't know very much at all about the history of the Middle East or, frankly, about history in many areas of the world, including in our own country.

Clinton then went on to criticize people who are unaware of efforts by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to negotiate a peace deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

An offer was made to the Palestinians for a state, on 96% of the existing territory occupied by the Palestinians, with 4% of Israel to be given, to reach 100% of the amount of territory that was hoped for, Clinton said. If [former Palestinian President] Yasser Arafat had accepted it, there would have been a Palestinian state now for about 24 years.

Many young people don't know the history of anywhere

Many people don't. Young or otherwise.

But many people know how to spot genocide when shown clear evidence, though. Something some corrupt politicians wish people couldn't do.

I didn't think I knew much until I've recently had to explain some Israel/Palestine stuff and a bit of other general ME history to my girlfriend FROM IRAN. So don't worry too much. Young people from the middle east don't know much about middle east history.

Ah yes, the negotiations which were still ongoing when Israel had an election, and the new Israeli government decided not to continue them, and that what had already been discussed was not binding.

I am no way defending her generalization here, which is gross. But I mean.she was the Secretary of State. Chances are excellent she knows more about foreign affairs than the vast majority of Americans.

It is however, wrong to assume that protesters are doing so because they are ignorant of history and current events. That was not a good thing to say.

Who would take that deal? Imagine if we asked Poland in the 1930s to just give 4% of their land to Germany. Germany would take the 4% and then proceed to invade anyway.

Hillary just trying to suggest here, ingeniously, that pro-Palestinians are ignorant. Yeah MOST people don't know the history of Middle Eastern politics - that goes either way. But if you do know the history of Palestine and Israel, it's probably a good reason why you're pro-Palestinian in this conflict.

That is true, but it doesn't take a history lesson to recognize what Israel is doing and how the US is complicit. Also every US president is a war criminal by default.

I'm pretty sure Hillary doesn't know the history of the region.
The original 2 state plan was from 1947 and it was not accepted by Arabs in Palestine or the neighboring Arab League countries because even though only a third of the population was Jewish and the Jews owned only 10% of the land in Palestine, they were given 55% of the territory. The Palestinians ended up with 45%, even though they were the majority at the time. So they rejected it. And rightfully so.

She should probably also remember the modern root of the problems in the region is the Western powers drawing borders in a region they didn't understand after WW1 ended and the Ottoman Empire was dissolved.

But the post I was responding to said she was an old white lady who knows nothing about foreign affairs. I think that is false, and a silly way to start a discussion on a topic like this, so I said so. We can disagree with her (and I do) while sticking to the facts.

The fact is she was Secretary of State for a long time. She knows more than most about all of this. It doesnt mean she is right. But we should start a discussion with what is true and not just statements about what we feel.
