I'm betting it's some lost technology space ship so that the series can get its one piece z as the new generation of pirates take to the stars. That would also mean the "real prize" is endless adventures into the unknown which for Luffy would be the greatest prize of all.

I have similar thoughts about it, like it would have to be something Gol D Roger would leave for the next generation because he couldn't use it himself.

I figured it was already going to involve some terra-forming technology that would rearrange Planet One Piece into something less ridiculous

You know, as stupid and corny as that sounds it's honestly not out of character for Oda to do as the ending for the series and would be a preferable ending without pissing off the fanbase that much. Plus the "friends we made along the way" would be too predictable for a creative person like Oda.

I'm kinda banking on some kind of Wind Waker situation, where the world is a flooded version of something that existed before, and all the islands are basically the tops of mountains.

That's a possible theory if you look at Wano. At the end of the arc, Robin is shown what is an older version of Wano from years ago until the water rose too high. Its possible that years prior in the time of the unknown that the world was much like ours in several large masses of land surrounded by water and that all of the islands are technically part of those land masses.

Maybe it has to do with the weapons and One Piece being a terra forming weapon that manipulated the planet to make what it was today. Although it wouldn't explain why Roger and the others were laughing. Its also possible that the One Piece isn't that weapon and that the other weapons are and that One Piece is something all completely different. We do know that one weapon can manipulate the Neptunians and potentially destroy the world.
