You know, as stupid and corny as that sounds it's honestly not out of character for Oda to do as the ending for the series and would be a preferable ending without pissing off the fanbase that much. Plus the "friends we made along the way" would be too predictable for a creative person like Oda.

I wanted to say that about Oda being creative but in a meaner way because I feel that people in this topic are mocking this a bit too much. Oda's far greater at writing than to use such a tired concept as friendship as the end of it all. He's already used friendship, freedom, and dreams as a major part of the series so it wouldn't make sense to incorporate it by the end. That would be a lack of creativity and if he says that it is a tangible object, then I believe him.
