granted, doesn't seem like these folks do either, considering, but that's -why- they'd reach out to such firms.

Maybe they should just hire better writers? Outsourcing such an important part of your game to people who are not actively involved in the development of the game is a terrible idea.

Charlie is about as close as it comes to being left leaning centrist honestly. Idk if he's started to turn because I never see transphobic stuff, anti-women things; he hates the red pill/Andrew Tate type of content. He comes off more liberal leaning than rightoid. I think only one time he did something that rubbed me the wrong way, & I can't recall what it was right now.

Forsaken is going to be one of those games that people will look back on 10 years later and ask Was it really that bad?, and the answer will more than likely be No.

My main impression of Forspoken was that it was a mediocre open world game with a LOT of cringe dialogue and a MC that felt like they were trying too hard to be relatable.

But gameplay wise it seemed aggressively fine.

Essentially none of the things being complained about are actually bad translations. It's just a movement to hurt "the wokes" without actually having a real point beyond that.

The prevalence of translation inaccuracies is true. It's not that difficult to compare a line of Japanese dialogue side by side with the English script.

But the particular group vocally bashing the translation industry, wanting translators replaced by AI or something, almost certainly has an ulterior motive.

People like to conflate intent bastardization with "certain things are inevitably lost in translation" because the latter is an easier position to defend. Everyone knows japanese has turns of phrase, etc. that don't translate.

I can't speak to the pro-AI guys' in question or their arguments but I'm open to AI translation. If it's more faithful while also being readable/sensical (unlike basic machine translation) then it works for me!

Just because you can confuse translation and localization doesn't matter to my argument. Even Giblet's example isn't a translation issue: it's a localization one. On the left you have a exclamation acting as a battle cry, on the right you have an exclamation acting as a battle cry. Neither of which actually have any meaning. And similarly how all the whining about how "the west is making the women ugly" always brings up the same three pictures it's the same for crappy localizations: Fates is about as famous as it gets for messed up localizations. No one has ever said that crappy localizations don't exist, just that they are vastly overblown in number. For every crappy localization you have a hundred ones that are perfectly fine. And, if anything, the fact that people keep on whining about Japanese games is telling seeing as the overwhelming number of poor localization/translation jobs aren't from Japan.

Yeah I'm a fucking moron, I was thinking of Fresh and Fit and thought Aba N Preach were them. I take back what I said about them, mostly because I haven't watched a lot of videos from them to make a geniune argument for or against. I, however, still hold my opinion on Russell Brand. Even if he doesn't identify as "alt-right", he uses the same typical talking points and his fanbase is comprised of the typical alt-right crowd.

As I said in #24: average people don't know crap about what Japanese actually means and simple translation is not good enough. People don't get the different alphabets and their reasons for use, they don't get that there are largely non-used words in Japanese that are essentially "ye olde English", etc. Simple 1:1 translations are nowhere good enough and are only desirable when talking about language and culture reductively.

As I mentioned before the complaints happened on Unicorn Overlord in which it very flagrantly wasn't true. For instance, here is one of the lines that constantly had people whining about it:

The center translation is the (somewhat rough) translation of the Japanese and the translation on the right is the official dialog. In this line you can easily see it: the official dialog is super off from the Japanese and doesn't carry the same meaning or tone so it's wrong... right? Well, as I pointed out before this is yet another case of people whining about something they know nothing about. The big problem comes from the original, very dry, writing and the very important "tone word": duty. In English the word duty will give an implication on the moral character of the individual. Someone "does their duty" when they are serious about something. However, as I mentioned in another post that misses how the interaction of the language is with the neo-Buddhist movement in that it explicitly fit into the mentality of it being your duty to support others and society, which has caused the term itself to be "normal" and not loaded in that same way. In addition it acts as a joke as the character in question is supposed to be taken as not all that seriously as the usage of duty is supposed to conflict with the fact that he is constantly bumbling around and not doing said duty. Thus the tone is actually supposed to have a "womp womp" noise next to it the whole time, as opposed to what you get when you just directly translate it. So when bringing it over they didn't just go "translator's note: *insert twenty paragraph Japanese history lesson*", they came up with a joke that fit the desired tone (sort of... the writing in the Japanese version apparently completely fell flat to that audience so it's more "bad/bland joke" versus "goofy joke").

All the same it didn't stop people getting pissy about how dare those WoKe localizers do what they did. So yeah bad translations/localizations exist, I've even played several games that would qualify last month, but the overwhelming amount of complaints have always seemingly come from the position of "having an agenda" far more than they actually have a legit complaint. While Sweet Baby definitely comes across as bad localizers (I would need to know wtf games they actually worked on besides the ones paraded around to show that they are bad before I feel comfortable passing judgement there) the number of bad ones absolutely gets dwarfed by the good ones.

Personally I'd agree that, in a lot of these instances, the Japanese writing already was far from excellent.

This isn't about my tastes. I might prefer looser scripts myself. But I'm not going to ask companies to cater to me.

Sweet Baby Inc is a blight on gaming.
It's very telling that their employees have been melting down calling for mass reports and harassment because there's a steam group dedicated to listing all the games they have their hands in. Literally just a list.

Charlie was part of that one stream AoC did on Twitch about getting out the vote or whatever. He also put a video shitting on Dr. Oz the year he was running for Senator. It wasn't about his politics but the timing seems suspicious the way he dragged out years old stuff out of nowhere. He tried to play it off like "oh yeah I heard he was running for senator that would be bad LOL". So yeah, I don't get the impression he's even remotely alt-right.
