Personally I'd agree that, in a lot of these instances, the Japanese writing already was far from excellent.

This isn't about my tastes. I might prefer looser scripts myself. But I'm not going to ask companies to cater to me.

Oh no, I wasn't try to make a big point on the quality of the writing (though I would agree with what you're saying) just that there is usually a completely valid reason as to why the changes. I agree with the changes made not so much because I think the Japanese is bad, but because the entire tone of wtf is supposed to be shown there is off (the picture is not a good example of it, but the character is supposed to look utterly goofy with his appearance) when you use the direct translation. That's sort of why you have localizers as that's the only way to actually get what the intended feel is. Especially for languages that are extremely prolific in puns/portmanteau as Japanese.

I wouldn't call Asmongold "alt-right" (as an aside, I feel that people have used this term too loosely and too interchangeably with "far-right" in recent years; it originally referred to a very specific brand of white nationalist politics) or even a grifter, more of a useful idiot. He presents himself (and probably thinks of himself) as a "rational centrist" while parroting a bunch of reactionary talking points he sees online with less than the bare minimum of critical thinking.

How do you feel about voter ID requirements?

They check to see if your vote can be counted after the fact so I don't really see the point (especially since you have to register to even vote)

No, you said "the only real problem with voter ID is the waste of money debating it and signing a bill for it".

That is very different than "I don't see the point because they check your ID after you vote anyway".

If I say "the only problem with Wagyu is the cost to drive and buy it", that is not the same as me saying "I don't see the point of Wagyu when you can buy cheaper steaks anyway".

Pulling a Blizzard and going "What, do you guys not have phones???" followed by saying there's nothing wrong with forcing voter ID except the monetary aspect (for the politicians at that, so you don't even get to claim you were "against" it because it'd paygate some people) makes your stance on the issue pretty fucking clear.

Your whole schtick is to back republican dumbfuckery while trying to maintain a sense of ambiguity by talking around the actual issue so you have "plausible" deniability. If you feel like making further commentary, please know that It'll require you to explain how "the only real problem with voter ID is the waste of money debating it and signing a bill for it"." actually means "voter ID is bad and I don't support it", and how that mixes with you spending a whole topic parroting talking points in favor of implementing voter ID before anyone will take you seriously.

Correct, hence why I do not defend Fates (as well as the other obvious examples). However, it almost never actually seems to be that. As I mentioned before the complaints happened on Unicorn Overlord in which it very flagrantly wasn't true. For instance, here is one of the lines that constantly had people whining about it:

The center translation is the (somewhat rough) translation of the Japanese and the translation on the right is the official dialog. In this line you can easily see it: the official dialog is super off from the Japanese and doesn't carry the same meaning or tone so it's wrong... right? Well, as I pointed out before this is yet another case of people whining about something they know nothing about. The big problem comes from the original, very dry, writing and the very important "tone word": duty. In English the word duty will give an implication on the moral character of the individual. Someone "does their duty" when they are serious about something. However, as I mentioned in another post that misses how the interaction of the language is with the neo-Buddhist movement in that it explicitly fit into the mentality of it being your duty to support others and society, which has caused the term itself to be "normal" and not loaded in that same way. In addition it acts as a joke as the character in question is supposed to be taken as not all that seriously as the usage of duty is supposed to conflict with the fact that he is constantly bumbling around and not doing said duty. Thus the tone is actually supposed to have a "womp womp" noise next to it the whole time, as opposed to what you get when you just directly translate it. So when bringing it over they didn't just go "translator's note: *insert twenty paragraph Japanese history lesson*", they came up with a joke that fit the desired tone (sort of... the writing in the Japanese version apparently completely fell flat to that audience so it's more "bad/bland joke" versus "goofy joke").

All the same it didn't stop people getting pissy about how dare those WoKe localizers do what they did. So yeah bad translations/localizations exist, I've even played several games that would qualify last month, but the overwhelming amount of complaints have always seemingly come from the position of "having an agenda" far more than they actually have a legit complaint. While Sweet Baby definitely comes across as bad localizers (I would need to know wtf games they actually worked on besides the ones paraded around to show that they are bad before I feel comfortable passing judgement there) the number of bad ones absolutely gets dwarfed by the good ones.

This is an excellent example, as the original Japanese text is VERY dry to the point where it's impossible to tell that it was supposed to be a joke.
(Although maybe the English text goes a bit overboard)

And really, one needs look no further than the gazillion different English translations of the Bible to see just how tricky and contentious an issue this is.

As I said much earlier: there is no such thing as a "perfect" translation. What matters most is getting the original meaning and intent across.
