Oh I think I heard of this stuff on Twitter. Theres like a Steam Group or something. From my understanding, its not actually doing anything wrong, but people have been giving it attention which has made it blow up more than it probably needs to. If its petty, then just ignore it and let them do their own thing.

Essentially none of the things being complained about are actually bad translations. It's just a movement to hurt "the wokes" without actually having a real point beyond that.

I'm not talking about the stuff he in particular is complaining about, I'm talking about in general. And the existence of bad translations does not excuse the clearly far larger movement's existence. Like, one of the recent topics on the Unicorn Overlord board involved someone digging up a year old mock-up of the difficulty selection screen to complain about how it was horrid. Something that didn't matter for crap all because the actual English one was already available and didn't have the changes that this other one did.

Bad translations exist, but at a <1% capacity. And even then most of what's complained about is localization, not translation, which is even worse because people are complaining about stuff they know even less about.

This. Localization is whole different beast.

Some things just don't hold up to a straight 1:1 translation. Especially from Japanese.

There's really no such thing as a "perfect" translation or localization. It's essentially a case-by-case basis and what makes a certain work "good" depends on getting the original meaning across without sounding confusing or awkward.

Frankly even that doesn't really work as societies are different. Going back to the Unicorn Overlord example from before someone whined about the localization and how they ruined everything (prior to getting too mask off and someone ending up Warned + the topic locked). Only it was always going to be something that made no sense in the west as none of the countries in question went through the neo-Buddhist movement that Japan did so there was no way to translate the (kind of bland) meaning of the Japanese.

Exactly. There's always going to be plenty of cultural references that foreigners aren't necessarily going to understand.

That's what makes localization such a tricky thing. Will the audience get it or not? Should it be changed to something more relatable? And so forth.

There's been plenty of cases where the entire game was changed for the western market. Story, graphics, you name it.
That's not as common these days, but it happens.

Doki Doki Panic becoming the American version of Super Mario 2 is the most notorious example.

Its not tricky at all. Where you can you localise it to sometbing that has the same meaning and where you can't you just leave it as is with a footnote or just trust that the audience will go along with it.

This is also disingenous because cultural notes are far from the only stuff localised.

More on topic, this Sweet Baby is a big example of how culture war stuff has poisoned the well on stuff like this. Sweet Baby comes off as a nebulous consultancy firm that amounts to vortue signalling and rainbow capitalism. A kind of shitty, but also pretty meaningless thing. And yet you see it being aggrandised as "WOKE company RUINING games" instead of any actual analysis. Forspoken wasn't ruined by a cinsumting firm, it was ruined by being a piece of shit game. It feels like the proportion of hacks and grifters in the gaming sphere has only risen and risen, and its a huge shame

Unfortunately "woke" terminology has reached the main stream, saying it doesn't automatically indicate you're a delusional election denier.

That being said most of these games are pretty good and a few have sold exceptionsly well so in what way were they ruined lol

"Ruined" implies that every single one of those games was good beforehand and then added a bunch of "woke" to make them less good.

Anita Sarkeesian still has the best consultancy grift, hands down. I played an indie game and saw her in the credits and found out she was paid literally just to suggest that there be an optional "vegan" alternative to a single second of gameplay where the player can equip an egg item.
