Rules: If you list more than 4 things I'm gonna just pick the first 4 you say when I do the tally. If you list the same character multiple times I'm going to count it as 1 vote. Be nice to others and their potentially bad opinions. Don't shove your personal definition of "Mount Rushmore" down others' throats. Don't take this topic series too seriously. If you're going to change a vote please quote your old vote to make it easier for me.

Horror movie-specific rules: Horror should be the main genre of the movie, or at least strongly horror-inspired. If I see any suspect nominations I'll call them out but I'm going to continue leaving these topics fluid to keep them fun. (NOTE: if you do not specify which version of a movie you are voting for, such as Halloween vs Halloween vs Halloween, I am going to just make a guess and default to the most popular one when tallying)

YESTERDAY: I am not a wrestling fan so a lot of my tallying was "who? who? who? The Undertaker. who? who?" People seem to really love this El Santo guy. This Rushmore brought to you by Steiner.

Most what the fuck answer: Roman Reigns. I know just enough about wrestling to be surprised this guy got a single vote.

Here we go

Midsommar
Psycho
Saint Maud
Texas Chainsaw Massacre

HMs:
Hereditary (majorly considered it but didn't want it to be half Ari Aster)
The Exorcist (obviously more culturally significant than Saint Maud, but wanted to go with that for my religious horror choice: has a really fascinating, modern societal/psychological angle to it, still kinda blown away by it)
The Ring (hurt to leave this one off but I find myself slightly less into ghost stories these days. still terrifying and an improvement over the original though imo)

Not enough people wanted to snap into a slim jim smh

I feel like the months I have spent binge listening to The Evolution of Horror podcast (which is a tremendous podcast by the way, strongly recommended) have prepared me for this one:

Dracula (1931)
The Exorcist
The Silence of the Lambs
Get Out

Dracula absolutely needs to be here, it was the first modern horror movie, it kickstarted the Universal monster movie era and the studio-led horror movie movement that lasted for decades, and Bela Lugosi singlehandedly defined how we think about vampires. Theres a reason even the vampire emoji looks like him, not the book version or something else.

The Exorcist speaks for itself, incredibly iconic for the genre, the highest grossing horror movie ever for decades, and the first ever to be nominated for Best Picture.

The Silence of the Lambs should be on there for not just being the only horror movie ever to WIN Best Picture, but somehow pulling off Picture/Director/Screenplay/Actor/Actress, something a mere three films ever have managed. Also was hugely successful and kicked off the trend of prestige horror thrillers that continues to this day.

Get Out is the defining horror movie of the current era, opened up the current trend of auteur-led horror movies, and did tremendously well in terms of box office and awards.

I also considered Night of the Living Dead, but a lot of its influence is shared with Plague of the Zombies and Dawn of the Dead, and Jaws, but I feel it overlaps to heavily with The Exorcist in terms of time period and reasons it should be on there.

Holy crap, I'm stealing these. Exorcist and SotL were making my list regardless, but yeah, it's almost silly to envision this Mount Rushmore without a classic monster, and Lugosi's Dracula is the most iconic of all (though Nosferatu is a respectable substitute).

I was close to copying your entire list, as I love Get Out and definitely consider it the best horror film of the last several years. However, we're in need of a gross-out gore-fest, and while my heart wants to give it to The Thing, I can't deny what might be the originator of the modern gore and slasher genres.

  • Dracula (1931). It was this or Nosferatu, and I know which way the wind is blowing.
  • Night of the Living Dead. Codifier of the zombie genre in mainstream.
  • Alien. Excellent merging of genres, it means I can deliberately snub slashers.
  • The Exorcist. What's been said above.
HMs: Friday the 13th (if I was going to put a slasher, it would be this one), Blair Witch Project (major influence on low budget / found footage genre, but it's just too new at 25+ years for this old coot).

Thanks haha! The biggest argument for Dracula is that before it, the term horror movie wasnt really used at all, and after it everyone knew what a horror movie was. It is the codifier of the genre for sure.

Wow this one is really hard, there's so much incredible competition! My immediate thoughts are:

Halloween
The Thing
The Exorcist
The Ring

But even that completely fails to represent so many subgenres, notable periods and evolutions that the genre has undergone... I'll stand by that for now but may come back to change my thoughts after noodling on it.

Tentatively

Dracula
Psycho
Night of the Living Dead
The Exorcist

I feel like I ought to make a stronger pitch about Psycho, since I feel like the others have had good explanations.

Psycho was a completely wild experience when it came out in theaters and really changed the game. It's considered the originator of the slasher genre, but it's so much more than that. It's an incredible film to boot, and maybe without being as good as it was it may have taken longer to blow up as a genre. But people went crazy for this film. It was a movie with a shocking twist and during every showing people were told not to spoil it for anyone entering the theater. And the masterful directing and iconic scenes an camera shots cannot be overstated.

If one slasher makes it on here, it absolutely needs to be Psycho.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
Dracula (1931)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The Exorcist (1973)

I chose films that best exemplify the 4 biggest schools of horror still in employ today - psychological, monster, zombie, & supernatural.

Are there horror movies before Dr. Caligari? Yes of course, but none as fully formed as this German Expressionist masterpiece. It absolutely laid the groundwork for all horror to come, especially in psychological horror. Its visually striking and distorted set designs emphasized atmosphere and the mental state of the characters, while its narrative framing device and twist ending both continue to be a mainstay in the genre today. It established that characters such as Cesare or the titular Dr. Caligari can become popular icons despite the horror they perpetrate. It established both horror and film in general as accessible art that typically pushed social commentary to the forefront and held up a mirror to the audience, making us active participants in the horror. It proved that films that don't have to be limited to one country only and can have massive worldwide appeal. There's really so much more I can get into but those cover the most important points I think.

If Dr. Caligari proved horror movies as art, Dracula proved just as well horror can be franchisable. Though I chose this as the pioneering example of a "monster movie", defining the vampire film in particular, its true legacy resides in Dracula's role in establishing the loosely connected Universal Monsters Universe. Bela Lugosi's Dracula was an instant icon and they became synonymous with each other. Bolstered by this performance, Dracula established horror as commercial, encouraging audiences to seek out the next installment or even adjacent-horror films just starring Lugosi. Dracula is why I feel comfortable leaving off something like Halloween - because it's the same thing, just with a different presentation.

It feels like NotLD needs no introduction or explanation. That's how huge and influential this film is. I actually think it's the most secure lock on the whole mountain. Zombie media has changed very little this release. Its pointed social commentary is legendary, especially the casting of African-American actor Duane Jones in the lead role. In addition, it's low-budget, indie style coupled with shocking violence for the time laid the groundwork for the type of filmmaking that has almost become synonymous with modern day horror.

And at last, we come to The Exorcist, the "scariest film ever made". Its intense and visceral portrayal of demonic possession and exorcism coupled with a deep exploration for religion set a new standard for horror; again, much like NotLD, how many films do you know that are just basically loose remakes of The Exorcist? It's the first horror movie to be given a best picture nod, an extreme rarity in the horror genre. It's a technical marvel and proved horror films could delve into taboo topics and find a place in the mainstream. Except for The Blair Witch Project, I believe the horror genre has not experienced a significant defining turning point like this since.
