yeah, Dave the Diver was developed by Nexon, one of the largest gaming companies in the world. Not even remotely indie.

It was published by Nexon and developed by a subsidiary of theirs. Which I dont think many people know!

I suspect many people (myself included) assumed it was indie because of it being listed as developed and published by Mintrocket, not knowing that was just a Nexon subsidiary

How many, "official," Game of the Year contests are there?

I know Game Awards has been doing theirs since 2014, but I know I've heard of several games that have won, "Game of the Year," that was not awarded at Game Awards, like Hades or Control for example.

Is there only one "official" Game of the Year, or are there multiple titles that can officially hold that title due to multiple contests?

Nothing is official, any publication can declare their own game of the year. theres no regulation around this sort of thing.

Are those the most reputable? I guess that's the real question I'm looking for. There can be multiple GotY, but are there only some sources that people take seriously in the gaming community?

The closest youll find to a reasonable consensus of the media and audience as well as the biggest is probably TGA. The most prestigious is probably either BAFTA or DICE.

I remember messing with a Hello Kitty MMO back in the day. Oddly good music.

I too also forgot Dave the Diver was Nexon. It is a genuinely good game, so it deserves to be somewhere, just not the indie category.

That game is, like, the savior of modern gaming as far as I'm concerned.

So desperate for structured, linear AAA games. And yes, I plan on picking up Alan Wake Remastered once Black Friday hits because that series will probably hit those buttons too.

Shame it seems I have to beat Control again to play the Alan Wake DLC, but at least the game won't be on fire this time like when I played it on the base PS4. Being able to reliably crash the game by rapidly hitting the swap weapon button without fail was pretty fun.

Yeah i played re4make, armored core 6, and mario wonder all back to back and its like wow. These games are just so fun.

Four out of the six nominated games are structured, linear experiences. The rest of the list also has stuff like Hi-Fi Rush, Armored Core VI, and Pikmin 4. Plenty of stuff up your alley is still being released!

TotKs set pieces are better than the vast majority in linear games and it also has an incredibly interactive world and systems. Everybody wins!

I noticed recently that Far Cry 6 had a Game of the Year Edition, that made me pause a little. I wonder what obscure site it picked that up from!

Counting Mario would be a bit disengenuous.

And I don't consider Baldurs Gate 3 and and Spiderman to meet my criteria either.

Obviously Zelda is, like, everything I hate in a video game.

I dont care about Pikmin.

You absolutely don't have to play the Alan Wake DLC in Control to play AW2.

It certainly was a game of the year.

Not sure why you'd call it disingenuous unless your criteria is super specific. Mario is the definition of a structured linear experience. Spiderman I can kinda see it due to the open world elements, but it still has a strong main storyline focus.

Because it's a 2D Mario game. It's not really what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a game with some meat on it.

Look, I bought and am enjoying Mario Wonder. I just don't, like....respect it?? It's just throwaway turn your brain off fun. I'd sacrifice a dozen new 2D Marios for a new 3D Mario.

3D Mario and Fire Emblem are really the only Nintendo franchises that can do it for me nowadays. If they put out a full, non-open world Zelda I'd jump on it for sure, though.

Is it unpopular to say that I actually preferred Breath of the Wild over Tears of the Kingdom. Playing Tears of the Kingdom felt like a really big DLC and it didn't hit me the same way Breath did. In addition, I really liked Champions over Sages and the abilities in general felt more "Zelda"-like in Breath. I just feel that awed by Tears.

I don't think anything in gaming has ever made me angrier than everything about the ending that took place on that beach. I was literally pacing the room out of anger for how terrible it was. Die-Hardman's speach at the end was peak, though.

I will still be first in line for Death Stranding 2 regardless because I'm a tool.

Its also a bit debatable as different sites have different eligibility criteria. Death Stranding won basically no major awards but did well with small sites and fan votes (and honestly combining fan votes with outlets is odd). By contrast Outer Wilds won the BAFTA yet doesnt look so impressive on this tracker.

The difference in quality between some years in wild. Maybe one game from 2021 would have made this year's nominations.

I didn't play the game, but I can't help but feel Octopath Traveler 2 is an extremely asinine snub from Best RPG when you consider Lies of P is in the category.
