I had a PS2 as a kid and I wanted nothing more than a Gamecube. PS2's games weren't nearly as fun. Just a bunch of ports and edgy games that played sluggishly. Gamecube had the most fun games that were on another level, with snappy controls and a smooth framerate every time.

I was shocked that when I grew up it was considered a failure. Didn't care if there were only 20 games worth playing, when you're a kid you only get bought 20 games anyway. If it was a PS2 it was most likely some shovelware. If it was a Gamecube, then it was Melee, or Mario Kart, or SMS.

I think the Gamecube undersold, but like the Dreamcast imo it had quality titles. It's one of those rare "not as successful business wise" but "pretty damn cool for the players" consoles that is rightly looked upon fondly for those who know.

Yeah, all games that are infinitely less fun than a smash bros match with your friends.

You had those tank controls and pre-attack animations for maximum fun.

I didn't care about this in the slightest, yet I'd still argue that the GameCube was the fourth best console of its era.

I happily rank it behind the Dreamcast (if you want to talk about consoles done dirty by public perception and history...).

That's easy - nearly every game I bought that generation. Just off the top of my head I can think of the last good Final Fantasy game, the good Kingdom Hearts games, Suikoden III-V, the .hack games, Wild Arms, Xenosaga, GTA III/VC/SA, the Fatal Frame games, Deus Ex, SmackDown vs. Raw, Dreamfall, Knights of the Old Republic, the Myst games, Ultimate Alliance, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II...

It was the system that ultimately made me a Nintendo fan again after the abysmal N64.

That said, I don't know if I would consider it a top tier console. The only reason I even considered getting it was Smash, and even though I had most of the "important" games on it , none of them are ones that I am eager to go back to anytime soon. They were fine, just nothing I consider "classic".

I'd argue that this should say "worst controller", but honestly, even in its generation the Dreamcast existed, and it was coming on the heels of the N64, so even I can't say that.

It was still a terrible controller though.
No way the Gamecube's controller falls behind the original Xbox controller, pre-revamp. That thing was big enough to beat bears to death with.

Never underestimate the power of Halo.

Not only was it one of the best-selling games of that generation period, it had a huge percentage of the overall install base of the console. The sales numbers alone are something like 1 out of every 3 people who owned an Xbox were going to own Halo (though that might be deceptive - throw in people buying replacement consoles and the correlation probably goes up). Halo 2 comes even closer to being like 1 copy for every 2 Xbox owners.
Your numbers are off - Halo 1 sold about one copy for every five Xboxes and Halo 2 sold 1 copy for every three Xboxes (and for the latter figure, I wasn't able to determine if that was including sales of the PC version).

That's not really a mark in the console's favour, though. Like... Halo *made* the Xbox, to the point where if Halo hadn't existed, I think it's unlikely the Xbox would have made half of its eventual sales (yes, Halo's sales numbers were below that mark, but Halo was the reason why people gave the Xbox a shake and that built interest via market penetration). I'm not sure I've ever seen a console that was so reliant on a single franchise to move units. The next best-selling game on the Xbox after the Halo games was Sneak King, a joke game given away by Burger King with their value meals, and the dropoff from Halo to the next games on the list is steep; no game on the Xbox sold even half of what Halo 2 did, and, disregarding Sneak King, only one managed to meet that mark for Halo 1 (Fable). Contrast that with the PS2 and Gamecube - take away their top two best sellers (GTA:SA and Gran Turismo 3 for PS2, SSBM and Mario Kart: Double Dash for GC) and you still have really solid libraries without any big sales dropoffs.

If Halo didn't interest you, there was almost no reason to buy an Xbox - even back then people noticed that all its best games were either multiplatform or wound up on PC six months to a year later. If you had a PS2 (and, given its status as the best-selling console of all time, something only the DS challenged it for, you probably did) and a PC capable of running modern games, you already had access to 90% of what the Xbox was offering and a lot more besides.

Yes, Halo was the killer app for XBox and moved units, but it did have some kick ass games as well. I mostly got mine for KotOR I and II and Jade Empire, as well as Morrowind, since I didnt have a gaming pc at the time. Back in the 80s, Super Mario Bros was the big system seller for Nintendo. There were tons of great games after, but had the NES not launched with that in the states, I don't think it would have sold nearly as well as it did.

Hell, Halo interested me but I just found a copy on PC at walmart for like $10 at some point. Did 1 on console have custom/modded maps? I was too young and dumb and dialup to figure out more extensive conversion mods, but the PC client seemed to handle modded servers well.

Gamecube was not very good, better then the N64 and Wii which were terrible, but way worse then it's generational competitors, the PS2 and the Xbox.

Mario Sunshine sucks, Pokemon sucks, Fzero is cool but ridiculously difficult, both Zeldas are solid games but not even like in the top 5 for the series. Resident Evil IV and Metroid Prime are probably the only 2 games originally on Gamecube I would give a 10/10. Also had the superior versions of Phantasy Star Online and Skies of Arcadia which was nice.

I'll back up the detractors of the cube with dissing on the D-pad. That sucked hard. The C-stick I could deal with. there were a few dual-stick shooters and they worked fine.

The two things the controller had going for it (and still do frankly) are the shoulder triggers and the notched housing for the control stick. The level of control with those shoulder buttons was on par with a gas pedal or something. Luigi's vacuum controlled so damn well with that.

and the notched housing around the control stick was great for locking in directions. It still drives me bonkers trying to play Super Monkey Ball on PS2 without that.

The GameCube was never a top tier system even for the time it was on the market. Probably the most overrated in terms of anything retro right now the last couple of years with the amount of revisionist history and fanboys' need to attack it's competitors, mostly the PS2. That does not mean it's a bad system though. But it's time to take off the rose tinted glasses.

Not everyone gamed on PC though. Sometimes, I feel like it's a cop out excuse to disregard a system. That said, while I can see parts that give it a reason to be considered top tier, I do think Xbox gets a little overinflated at times because of the Joe Redifers that exist online. The ones that go on and on about the graphics (mostly that) and the audio. But yeah, I don't think anyone would miss much outside of the first party games and the very few third party exclusives.

My best friend growing up had Sega Genesis while I had the SNES. He had most (if not all) of the Sonic games, Rocket Knight Adventures, Eternal Champions, Vectorman, Ecco the Dolphin, etc. I obtained plenty of the SNES classics (my library was only 4 games when I got it, but that grew of course): Super Mario World, F-Zero, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Kart, Mega Man X, Street Fighter 2, and a few others. His favorite video game growing up was Sonic. Mine was Mega Man X.

Back in the rental days, too. Never owned Mega Man 7 but I made it all the way to Wily renting it every weekend. Never beat Wily though until the anniversary collection came out on the Gamecube.

It really depends on the kind of games you were into anyway. If you don't play FPS then Xbox would have been the "shit" console of that generation.

Depends on the generation. If every console in a given generation was better than most others throughout history, the whole generation could be top tier, regardless of how they rank within that tier.

Common misconception, the Dreamcast had copy protection, pretty strong copy protection in fact. The problem was that the SDK for it was hacked shortly after the system was released and it was pretty easy to circumvent once you knew what to do.

I can't go into details for obvious reasons. However, breaking the copy protection is done when the game is ripped, not when you burn it.
