I first noticed the double standard on these boards with people talking about Michonne during early seasons of TWD. The shear volume of people who said, "I hate how she's scowling all the time. How fucking hard is it to smile?" And it's like shit, when have you ever heard a male character get shit talked for not smiling enough and when has TWD ever been perceived as a show with happy characters.

Morally grey characters are dumb. Everyone is morally gray, that's how morality works. Its a subjective spectrum. Focusing in on that and defining a character by it suggests the character is written poorly. Similarly, I hate it when Metal Gear fans act as if Metal Gear characters are "morally grey" "no good or evil". The games would be way worse if that was actually the case.

I play a mobile game, Nikke Goddess of Victory, where one of the antagonists is morally grey. She's a terrorist, inarguably a villain, but fighting for a good cause against a corrupt system. People hate her and refuse to understand her motivations. You can't be morally grey and female because men cannot relate to that.

Related, Gone Girl is a fantastic example of what a female antagonist should look like. Don't need a whiny backstory, don't need to have a facade of justice, just a bad person doing bad things.

This kind of thing always makes me think of MGS where so many of its fans will say The Boss is a Mary Sue, but not Solid Snake or Big Boss. They're always "badass" instead.

It is why the guy that made the Mary Sue test now condemns it: it is mostly just flagrant sexism in reality.

You're talking about the character who (attempted to) kill at least three other NIKKEs, or at least leave to their deaths, actually killed hundreds of civilians, and you want to say her problem is "being morally grey and female"?

Oh, and she's also bad in a meta sense.

Is this a thing? I'm not really a part of those fanbases mentioned. Of the stories I've read, I've seen plenty of great morally grey male and female characters.

Most of the people who wanted Kylo to be moral gray were women who wanted to fuck him, so they used Rey as their stand in derailing the last two movies .

Crow hates the Ark for oppressing Nikkes and the Outer Rim and is actually just a terrorist. Like the taliban used to be considered freedom fighters. She does bad things, she's a villain, but her cause is to gain recognition of Nikke problems. The Ark isn't going to recognize her if she doesn't actually pose a threat to them. And as far as she's concerned, the whole Ark is the enemy.
But, yeah, people have no issues identifying with Walter White and justifying his actions.

Syuen is actually just a bad person. She only cares about herself and would put everyone in danger to make a buck. She's only an ally because it gives her power.

To play devil's advocate; I would argue that this isn't exclusively from viewers being unfair, but from the trend of more female protagonists arising at the same time the quality of writing in a lot of modern media has gotten worse. It's not that modern writers are creating the same kinds of characters which audiences simply hate because they're women. It's rather that, at the same time writers are creating more female characters, they are also handling the same tropes and plot devices worse.
