been trying to follow along with anime this season but i keep drifting back into being The LN Guy

I think compared to the animes i'm behind on s-rank adventurer but ahead on apothecary, but there's also a lot of good stuff going on with just weekly catchups I've managed to stay on track for. i'm near the end of what would probably be a season 4 finale of realist hero and damn, it really did get better (...when it wasn't dragging)

I'm all caught up with Sound Euphonium now except for Liz and the Blue Bird, which I probably should have been more aggressive in getting a copy of not knowing how little Mizore and Nozomi would be present in the film and OVA (although their stories are done by the time the OVA comes around). That being said, Winter and Spring 2024 are absolutely jacked and will be a fantastic 6 months of anime, and Oshi no Ko S2 looming on the horizon.

I was really surprised to find out that Ensamble Contest currently sitting at #1 OVA on Anichart for the year. You can definitely see the increase of quality in KyoAni pre and post Arson attack (when KyoAni was already top tier when it came to production quality), and this series is no exception.

been delving back into Honeyworks' Love/Idol series stuff (they're movie videos about usually romance that all connect to each other) and they have simply only gotten better. and they finally gave a sort of resolution to my favorite character who was first introduced nearly a decade ago, god bless. you can watch like 8 videos in a row and it's a contiguous storyline with another 15 videos branching off

Been watching a lot of the old Lupin the Third dub since it's free to watch on several different sources now. Can't believe it's been twenty freaking years since I used to watch it on Adult Swim.

Also that new Crunchyroll channel is kind of useful. There's not a whole lot of new shows that I make a point of watching, but since they air automatically and they're dubs, it's nice to have on in the background while doing other stuff and I occasionally take an interest in a show.

Been keeping up with most of the seasonals I started. Under Ninja is fuckin hilarious. It's gotta have some of the best quotes in all of anime. "If I cut off 3 dicks, I can become a ninja. If I become a ninja I can save my daughter" and the newest line "How do you know where I live?" "Don't you remember me following you home without you noticing the other day?". There is nothing like this show and it's sad the first 10 seconds of hilariously bad cgi filtered the audience so heavily. Definitely my biggest positive surprise this season.

It also has a japanese 17 year old drink beer at every opportunity instead of pulling the classic "yeah I'm a trained assassin thats murdered 500 people but I'm underage so I can't drink" bs.

I'm pretty sure that trope was a bit more legally motivated than that. Probably something to do with age ratings and time slots. Kind of like how in EU you cannot show weapon violence against child characters in game cutscenes (hence the change to the opening of tales of berseria). You can still show children get killed, just not if it's done with a weapon. Looking it up, it does seem to be an age ratings thing.

Under Ninja is such a weird show. It's so good at giving you these 50-50s where you don't know if it's going to be some cool interesting shit or some absolutely stupid absurd nonsense thats funny every time.

JJK has also been amazing lately. The arc really living up to the hype so far. The animation is godlike too.

I think those 2, helck, frieren and apothecary diaries are the best of season. I always look forward to them the whole week.

But other than that, it's pretty cute.

Now if you were looking forward to something like The Hero Took Everything From Me, So I Partied With The Hero's Mother! then that's just peak fiction appreciation.

16bit Sensation continues to be anime of the season and it's not even close. Konoha is just such an absurd character and her desire to make a "modern" eroge in 1999 is so much fun. The fact that this is all anime original (the manga is radically different) is all the more better.

Konoha pisses me off every time I watch. Dudeman was all set to just abandon the PC 98 and move to windows like a sane human being and she whined at him to change the future (which in this case would be for the worse) and then when she had a chance to the future, she didn't for like 2 episodes cause she was scared.

It actually amazes me that they can create a plot about a cute nerd girl wanting to make porn video games and make me not like it. All of the references are great and it's fun just taking a disjointed trip down memory lane back to the 90s VNs and stuff but they just picked a really hateable main character IMO.

I can see why people don't like Konoha, I just don't take characters "seriously" like that. I'm along for the ride, and find it completely reasonable for Konoha to be mixed about wanting to change the timeline (while accidentally changing the timeline). Not all characters are perfect. She finally does make a decision in the latest episode.

I'm specifically not spoiling the latest episode because by the looks of it you haven't seen it yet (which is reasonable as it came out like 2 hours ago).

Man, berserk of gluttony is so derivative it almost feels like a greatest hits. Main guy is a kirito rip off, main girl is a visual rip off the main girl from danmachi, axe girl is a visual rip off of the .hack main girl, skill is a rip off of slime isekai, it's stealing the theme of deadly sins, it's name has berserk in it.

It's like the author challenged himself to cram as many elements from other popular isekai/fantasy shows as possible into one very mediocre package.

Rewatching AoT and catching up with all I haven't seen yet. I'm halfway through s2 already. It's one of the best things when you find a show that just clicks with you, and you can just watch ep after ep. I've only ever watched the first two seasons, so the rest is all going to be new. It is indeed a pretty well-balanced cast, though, with the show's enjoyability hinging more on the chemistry between them than relying entirely on one or two strong personalities to carry it.

I've randomly caught a few episodes of Arifureta on Crunchyroll's streaming channel...

I'm usually not so harsh when critiquing.. but this series is shameless unrepentant wish fulfillment masturbation. It's fun to watch at times, but it's, like, everything a stereotypical weeb wishes would happen to them. Average loser gains OP mystic powers along with drip and an eyepatch, gets vicious revenge on everyone who ever wronged him, goes on a rampage against freaking God itself, and has every fucking woman in the series begging for his dick (and of course he prefers the loli).

But yeah, Mugi best girl. Possibly because that's one of very few episodes that actually leans on a single character's personality to carry it instead of the chemistry between everyone, and where it stands out as being a particularly great episode, that means Mugi stands out as being particularly best girl. But I'm probably overanalyzing it, given that it's K-On.

Yesterday, Youtube randomly made me aware of a yuri-themed show called "I'm in Love with the Villainess." Finding interest, I took to Crunchyroll, only to discover close to half the episodes out so far are locked behind Premium. So then I looked up the manga and got caught up with that version of it.

Then, before going to bed, I learned there's a series of novels, and the manga apparently is somewhere in the second volume. Also apparently the story could have ended at the end of volume 2 but kept going out of some demand for more, and volumes 3 and onward are where the story goes off the deep end. So I guess I hope the manga ends where it is supposed to end? This would mean the manga might go for another year or so before wrapping things up, but still, better that than dragging things on.

Since VNs are allowed:

I've tried reading a lot of the anime themed ones, but they're usually way too long, and I feel like they mostly waste your time. Far too many of the popular ones are Slice of Life or really bizarre comedies, neither of which really interest me.

That said, anyone here read any of the 3d ones?

Fair enough, I feel like a it's pretty rare to find someone that likes both. I feel like I've tried reading about a dozen VNs, and what turns me off more than anything off is the very slow pacing, followed by other issues like the fact that they're almost always about kids, and there's so few translated titles that are fantasy or sci-fi.

I recently went on r/VisualNovels, asking for a really great, serious medievil fantasy visual novel with descriptive combat, and no gameplay(which I made clear I meant not a hybrid of RPGs). I was given stuff that "technically counted," and stuff that will likely never be translated. Most of them don't even know what descriptive combat is, and when you explain with examples they still don't get it. Meanwhile I'm playing the Mass Effect inspired Tales From The Unending Void Season 1, and it's one of the best stories I've ever read!

I also don't like anything I've played from Spike Chunsoft either. I find their games pretty cringey. And from what I understand, they control most of the VN market.

That is a wildly inaccurate statement lol. They developed Danganronpa, Zero Escape, 428 which noone remembers, and have been publishing some of the science series (Steins;gate etc) IP for about six years now (I think mostly internationally; MAGES has always been the developer)

Nitroplus, KEY, Type-MOON, Alicesoft, 07th expansion, Aquaplus/Leaf are all a lot more prolific, and for the most part self publish afaik. Spike Chunsoft is more known for VN or anime adjacent games than VNs themselves

Full Metal Daemon Muramasa was written by an actual swordsman (he came out of nowhere, did two masterpieces, and left forever) and is widely considered to have some of the best written combat out there because he actually knows what he's talking about. Main character's also actually a grown adult. I haven't gotten to it yet as it's a relatively recent English release, but it's probably next on my list. The other thing he did was Kikokugai - The Cyber Slayer which was a lot shorter and was like a test run for Muramasa

Fate/Stay Night has good combat but it has a LOT of slice of life filler between fights; Dies Irae feels a lot like it, but it cuts out like 80% of the filler and has more intense fights. It's edgy in a chuunibyou way (the villains are resurrected nazi magicians and everyone's powers involve monologuing in german, etc) but the fights are pretty fuckin cool. It has a demo on steam comprising the common route

Dies Irae, Muramasa, and Kikokugai are the main ones you'd want to check out if you want to limit filler and get to cool fight scenes. There's a couple that have really good combat but it takes literally dozens of hours to get to any combat so I'd assume you're not interested in those
