Where have we come as a society where the reaction to seeing a stranger is "shoot them dead".

When right wing media has convinced millions of people that strangers exist to plunder their personal property and are trying to get "more rights" than them, they live in constant fear. They don't leave their personal bubbles except on their own terms, and anything that disrupts that is cause for firing a gun.

Sounds like a good idea to just not have children in America period these days. Certainly glad I dont have any, but fear for all the little ones in my family since America is just a ghoul at this point

I feel like this is describing wanting to be a parent in general.

I'd love to have kids one day but... good lord not in this country. I don't want to send my kids to pre-school and have to pray they don't end up on the news.

as a Canadian I dont want to have kids because I wont be able to afford a living space that isnt trash for them

i feel bad for Americans because the list of reasons is like 1000x longer and includes my child might just randomly get killed

I always make sure to give both of my kids a big hug before school just in case. It sucks for us, but it's worse for the kids. We had fire and tornado drills growing up. They have that stuff, and also "Intruder" drills.

Oh, adopting, good luck! My oldest is adopted, it's quite the roller coaster but so worth it.

It is a long, complicated, and expensive process.

And once again Iowa sucks and the state won't help you adopt from other states (including not allowing you to use an Iowa homestudy) but also won't let you adopt non-infants in Iowa unless you are an active foster parent.

Oh wow, that really sucks. The thing about the homestudy doesn't makes no sense. That really makes hit harder to cast a wider net to find a match too.

The prices are outrageous. I don't know what they are now, but my oldest is 9 and she was already born prior to us being matched (we got the call when she was 2 days old, brought her home when she was 6 days old). Still cost us $25,000

The Dominion vs Fox News lawsuit started today and apparently Foxs defense is that the Simpsons did it first.

They flat out told us they didn't like people using their resources to adopt from places other than Iowa. So no training, no homestudy, etc.

We are going to end up adopting internationally because it is somehow simpler than adopting domestically in Iowa (if you don't want an infant).

Not sure what happened. I'm disappointed as I wanted to see Fox News burn to the ground. It's likely just a straight money settlement. I hope it's more, but looks like Fox is just gonna pay and continue to spread lies.

Expecting a company to care about anything beyond money was definitely a trap people fell into. Dominion was never your friend.

Whatever lawsuit by whatever company you are putting your hopes on now. They are probably not your friend either.

They like the publicity, they like the money coming in. They don't give a shit about fox news beyond their own potential financial gain.

Ehh it would have been nice if they hadnt settled, but thats not their responsibility. The settlement was for $787 million which is over half of Foxs net yearly income (and like triple the value of Dominion apparently).

Unsurprising but deeply disappointing. Murdoch is a poison to global democracy.

Unfortunately his son Lachlan Murdoch (who Kendall Roy from Succession is based on) is even worse than him so unfortunately I think were stuck with them for the time being.

Its a real shame part of the deal didnt involve Fox News having to admit live on TV theyre liars and fire all of their amazing journalists after as well. Its only fair

Not exactly politics but huge congrats to the SpaceX crew for their "exciting" test launch and subsequent "rapid unscheduled disassembly" of the "largest, most capable rocket ever developed".

I realize in some sense this is part of the process for new technology in the testing phase but sometimes I just can't help but laugh

It was the largest and most powerful rocket ever made and it both took off with an absurd number of engines and passed max Q on its first try

The way I look at it is that in scientific research framing things unequivocally as either successes or failures is often not the most reasonable framing. However that's exactly the framing that public relations asks that you provide, which results in weird posturing like this that makes no sense.

Some aspects were executed successfully and some were not, and the goal of the test is to figure out which ones are not successful and why.

Of course I'd rather they just say something like "the rocket successfully achieved liftoff but then exploded which isn't great, but now we have more information to help us address the problem in the next version", but yeah.

Way too late for that, some Florida Republican was already openly talking about eradicating the LGBT community like a week ago.

Maybe not the best idea to bring up, but for people who genuinely do want to "shield" kids from the LGBT community on the basis that it will supposedly confuse them...aren't they just setting those kids up to be confused when they grow older? I never understood that logic, not to mention how many of these people also complain about so-called cancel culture and yet here they want to cancel the LGBT community. I don't even claim to really care that much about LGBT causes or rights and I'm still appalled.
